    Discussion: What is UEFA Thinking?

Another year of Fifa is rolling on in and another year having to settle to play the Champions Cup instead of the officially licensed UEFA Champions league. I don't know what the specifics of PES licensing Champions League and how they got it. Was it money or UEFA's decision? Regardless of money or a decision, it's mind boggling that UEFA would license the far less successful soccer series on the market. Fifa is the most successful soccer game so why is UEFA settling for the less successful game? Thoughts?

This is only a guess, but, $$$$$$.

I'm assuming PES threw a larger figure at them than FIFA did, and, Bob's your uncle.

I'm pretty sure Konami pays an insane amount for the exclusive license. And its part of the reason why they don't have money to get other licenses. And its EA fault for letting it happen. They could have stepped up back in 2008/9 and paid for it, but didn't think Konami would. And they did.

Also Konami is putting out a separate game next summer called EUFA Euro 2016. Taking a page out of EAs book with the world cup games. Konami will announce all the details of the stand alone game this December. The assumption here is they need to make more money off this license deal. The companies game division overall is in the toilet.

And on the other hand, at this point I'm so sure EA cares. They still outsell PES, and they rake it in with FUT. Getting the license isn't probably worth it at this point in time. Not unless PES really turns it around and that myclub also takes off, and they start stealing players in mass quantities.

EA is probably losing this one. I'm seriously considering jumping ship, and trying to convince many others to come with me. ( Not in here, of course )

Assuming that UEFA probably makes some profit off the game some way some how, I still think it's a loss for them. Fifa makes so much more money and so many more people play it. UEFA could've made a big profit of it. PES alone isn't a good game in my opinion, Fifa has really good graphics, I think PES has better though. When it comes to gameplay, it's no contest, PES is like playing robotic soccer, it's not smooth or fluent.

The people in charge of these deals at UEFA don't care about the actual games. They only care about the check they get. Its business. The product itself doesn't matter to them, just that they get that massive pay check. The games can suck for all they care. They get that money no matter what. And people are smart enough to realize its not UEFA's fault if the game is bad, so it doesn't affect them in anyway if it is, or if people see it that way.

It doesn't matter to UEFA if PES sells 5 copies or 5,000,000 copies. They've already been paid for the license.

The moment FIFA comes in with a higher figure than Konami, they'll get the license.

I get what you mean, I was talking there for general public of people wanting to switch from Fifa to PES, sorry for the confusion. But I just feel like there are things that really complete games aside from gameplay and graphics. Having licensed Champions League would really just put EA over the top.

                    Yeah, that's an EA issue.

My guess is that EA feels like they don't really need the Champions League licensing. They have tons of leagues and teams licensed, and that's the big deal for a majority of consumers.

EA did nothing with the CL license except produce another $60 game apart from FIFA. The same goes for the UEFA EURO tournaments. Had EA maintained the license and included it within the annual FIFA release then my opinion would be different, but I'm glad the UEFA license is not in their hands anymore.

Re: Discussion: What is UEFA Thinking?

The thing is that years ago EA did have the license, but they opted to make separate games of it. My guess is that it never really sold that well and when their deal was up they didn't bother to renew.

But I'm sure that EA will get the license back some day.

Look at their official Premier League and now Bundesliga presentations in the game, they obviously are taking stuff like that serious now, so one day they will want to add the official Champions League presentation to that list.

Konami has a deal until 2019 though, but that gives EA time to add official presentations of all the other leagues into the game before they move on to the Champions League.

But I fully expect the license to eventually return to EA.

Those games were usually good though, the one year they tried to add it as DLC it just sucked.
