I like to pick my best 11 as my league game starters. Playing in the EPL I play my 11 starters for league matches and then play backups in the early rounds of tournaments and Europa league

Be a real manager and ignore their whining. I have two first team lineups for different formations dependent upon who we are playing. I then have a youth squad for domestic cups. Players move in and out dependent upon performance and need based on their stamina. If they don't like their playing time, they can find a new club or perform.

I've 2 team sheets with 2 different team list for league games. I alternate both teams every week on the fly. So the team that plays a match this week is different from the one that plays the next match. And for cup games I use each for specific cup competition. But I ensured that I've a good balance in both team.

So far it's working fine (but still early to judge if all highly rated players will remain happy/content) am only 9 games into my first season (WC difficulty) and am topping league 2 with Portsmouth.

This also keep the players full with energy before each game.

This might seem strange, but I like to tune up the injury sliders to high frequency and low Severity. You'll get more short term bangups and will have to do more managing.
As a bonus, in-game, players get knocks but don't always have to come off and there are consequences for banging your guys around.
If you find the sweet spot with the sliders its really fun

Might not appeal to everybody, but I enjoy it...might help force your hand regarding subs etc...

Don't tell everyone on their contacts they are crucial or important first team players. Then they wont complain about not playing all the time.

Also that stupid squad roll on the contract needs to go away. I hate it.

When i start with a club i record the squad roles for each player. In 2014 it was really hard to lower a player's expectations so i will likely look to deal or loan a player with high expectations that i do not expect to play much.

Also (again in 2014) winning makes almost everyone happy. If your team is performing at or above the league goals most players will be happy.

                    I hate squad rolls!!
It simply is not realistic. Sure guys get moody IRL about not playing but in the game it is silly. You have a guy behind the likes of Ronaldo and he is gonna whine about when he gets in? Really?

I play my bench and reserves in early round cup matches. And then rest my superstars against weak table teams. The issue is players sometimes still get bent. I do not care, I manage to win, you play when needed to restsomeone or assist the team in winning. If you want a transfer, I am not forcing anyone to stay. I would transfer my Dad if he whinned about game time.

I rarely play with big clubs anymore but a few years back I was using Man Untied and switched them to a one forward system. RVP got all butt hurt about not playing enough. I transfered him to City for some scrub midfielder just so I could place a bone jarring slide tackle on him everytime he took a touch!!!
Obviously a more mature person would handle the situation better....

#1 tip I have for low level clubs is get players in on loan, especially now with two year loans. Loaned in players never complain about not playing enough, they are always content. If I could I would have about 15 guys on my squad and get another 15 on loan...

I completely agree about squad roles. Boiling down a managers relationship with a player to just playing time and squad role is just too simplistic...then to make it punative on top of that is too much.
