Just different variations. You could have a 4-5-1 with 3 CMs. Or a 4-5-1 with 2 CMs and a CAM. The number in parentheses is just to distinguish one from the other.

      So does # in ( ) mean CMs? Would 4-5-1 with 3 CMs be 4-5-1(3) and4-5-1 with 2 CMs and a CAM be 4-5-1(2)?

No, it's just whatever order they are in on the list. The number has no significance.

Re: what does th # in ( ) mean in formations?

It only tells you the order from left to right of how the players are lined up. Not what positions they are playing

You have sections broken up in this order:
defenders - mid defenders - mid field - attacking mid - attackers

So a 4-5(2)-1 could mean either 2 defenders or two attackers, it just tells you that 2 of them are not in a standard mid role.

This is why you see formations also broken up as 4-2-3-1 instead of 4-5-1. Its easier for people to look at 4-2-3-1 and know exactly what the formation organization is than just 4-5(2)-1. Because the 4-5(2)-1 could also be a 4-2-2-1-1, or a 4-3-2-1 or even a 4-1-2-2-1.

I'd ignore the brackets and just look at the actual spacing of the players.

But that is not how they are denoted in FIFA this year. Look here: http://www.fifauteam.com/fifa-16-ult...am-formations/

The number in parenthesis is simply after the formation to denote a different variation and has nothing to do with how the mids line up. If it does, it makes no sense to me when you start looking at the 4-3-3, which goes up to 5, lol.

Looks like they are just using it as a variation number then this year. as in (2) is the second variation. (3) is the third variation, and so on. They aren't using it to donate any type of formation changes, just to keep them not being named exactly the same. So that is just a dumb EA thing.

              4-3-3 (2) “Hold”
              4-3-3 (3) “Defend”
              4-3-3 (4) “Attack”
              4-3-3 (5) “False 9”
I've never seen a 4-3-3 holding labeled as 4-3-3 (2) before in my life. Only as a 4-3-3 holding.

EDIT: Doing some research, I guess this is pretty common place now days. Not sure when that became popular or the norm.

This has been so confusing. I like to use as close to real life lineups as possible in MM and getting an Arsenal lineup with Ramsey and Coquelin and a Chelsea lineup with Matic and Fabregas was a super annoying task. Lol!

Right, it's just showing that there's variations of a formation. They could have used 4-3-3(a), 4-3-3(b), etc.

I know the feeling, I often end up manually editing positions in the team sheet so I can get it set up exactly how I need it to be.
