How to really enjoy Career Mode

I'm honestly having a blast with this Portsmouth career I've started. I think the key to really having fun in career mode is using a lower league team that you can really mold into your own club. I've also given myself some house rules to make things more realistic/challenging.

    - Absolutely no checking player ratings or stats on sofifa/futhead/etc
    - Absolutely no using store boosts like Scout Future Star, Rematch, 60% budget increase
    - Never try to alter a result, if I lose I lose, no replays
    - Can only sign players who have been found by my global scouts
    - Only scout in realistic areas while in the lower divisions. Basically I only scout in nearby countries' leagues (England, Scotland, Ireland) and the MLS since I'm Canadian
    - This one hasn't actually happened yet, but if a significantly bigger club comes after one of my players, I have to sell unless the player is the captain of the team.

There are a few more I can't remember off the top of my head, but this is definitely making things a lot more challenging and fun.

I'm slowly trying to build a team that can grow together. I won the preseason tournament which gave me enough of a budget to sign Pereira from Manchester United. Also got Dele Alli from Tottenham on a 2 year loan and got a striker who's only 57 rated from my Academy, but who has 90+ potential. Gonna be exciting to build a young core and go all the way through the leagues with them.

      My House Rules:

      1. During the summer transfer window if multiple teams bid on a player I counter their offer with double the player value. If a team decides to pay the price he's sold.

      2. I keep 27 roster spots open for promoted YS players. 2 GK, 4 FB, 5 CB, 5 CM, 4 Wings, 3 CAM, 3 ST. 22 roster spots for first team and backups, and 3 open spots for flexibility.

      3. For the youth squad I only scout the country my team plays in, 4 surrounding areas and the country of the national team I manage. I'm playing in Germany so I'll scout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and the United States. A few exceptions follow.

      4. If I am looking to upgrade via transfer I try and fill the position with a player from my team's country or a country that shares a border before seaching the rest of the world.

      5. I disable the first summer transfer window and use my transfer budget to hire youth squad and GTN scouts.

      6. I use the Scout a Future Star option because you can only do 1 per season and I've found that they are not gauranteed to be better than players 4/5 star scouts find on their own.

      7. I do not use the save feature to get the best available recruits (anymore). It sucked the fun out of the YS and that may be one of my favorite parts.

      8. I don't use any budget upgrades.

      9. I don't promote a YS player before they are fully scouted. This happens when their potential has been reduced to a gap of 6, sometimes fewer but very rarely. For example, they were signed with a potential of 74-94 but after 6 months it is now 81-87 (84). It helps me compare them to other YS promoted players incase my roster fills up and I need to sell them off.

      10. I play my preseason tournament in a different country every year and never the same country my team plays in regularly. During the tournament I'll scout that country for 1 month.

      11. If my roster is full of YS players I try to transfer them to local teams where they will play to improve the quality of my league.

I have more but I can't think of them right now.

Re: How to really enjoy Career Mode

I try to play within the digital world of FIFA. What I mean is that there just aren't enough transfers between CPU controlled teams, so with that said I try to keep my transfers and loans to a minimum to mimic what the CPU is doing. I know this is not realistic IRL but you just have to do it this way to be fair. I usually only transfer/loan a total of 2-4 players a year.
