I was chugging along in career mode and kind of forgot to check on contract lengths of my players until I got news that one of them was considering taking a pre-contract from another team. So I entered contract negotiations, and the player wanted one year, which was ideal for me since he's an aging fringe player. So I gave him that and a slight raise and small signing bonus, and thought all was good.
Except that he still only had six months left on his contract. I thought maybe it just needed to be officially signed and would take a few days, similar to FM, which would be new. So then I went into negotiations with a player I was more keen to keep long term, and signed him to a three year extension. Except that after it was finalized he had 2 years, 6 months left on his contract.
It seems like it's counting the current year as the first year of the extension. So if you sign a player to a one year extension, like I did with the first guy, all you're actually doing is giving him a raise on his current deal.
It seems like that's not the way it should be working. Unless I'm doing something wrong, in which case feel free to make fun of me.
