My advice would be to play a few matches with various teams to see which style, formation, tactics etc. work for you. Then you use the formation & tactics you like as the base and start tweaking to see what's the optimal formation/tactics for you.

As an example I played various games with Man Utd (4-2-3-1 Wide), Real Madrid (4-3-3 Holding), Argentina (4-3-3 Attacking) etc. to see how they played. I heard lot of folks talk highly about 4-2-3-1 formations but it simply didn't work for me and I found 4-3-3 Holding and 4-3-3 Attack better suited to me. From there I played around with tactics and have an approach (combination of formation, tactics and instructions) which works for me.

One more thing... sometimes the style of football or formation that you love watching or which your favorite team uses may not necessarily be most suited to your playing style. so definitely give various formations a go against a common opponent and see how it goes.

Cheers i appreciate it. thats what ive noticed. I havent gotten a chance to dive into the game and plan on it this evening after work. fifa 16 4231 worked well with me. it would really frustrate people because i could just knock the ball around until they did somethign stupid. i for whatever reason was not able to do that in 17 i couldnt get behind defenses at all. im hpoing 433 works for me again as it did in 15 and even 16. i really dont like playing with wide players as for w.e reason crosses always seemed to be useless for me unless on a break. if i could get my backs to stretch teh field in this game properly it would make a worlds difference

I was struggling to create a lot of chances with a default 4-3-3, my ST just felt so isolated as I don’t really have any creative middies with Bordeaux. Switched up to a 4-2-3-1 with 2 holding mids, 2 wingers, and a CAM behind the ST. The CAM really opened up my attack as he comes short and dictates the attack. The bad thing is I only have 1 true CAM and he’s a loanee so I’m going to have to buy another one or try to buy him when his loan expires.

You don't have to rely on crosses and you can narrow the formation a bit when you are customizing it and setting up the instructions/tactics. I have my wingers in 4-3-3 brought in to the center a bit and are not that wide. In this game wingers are pretty good and you can set up the instructions for them to "Cut Inside" and you won't need to rely on crossing much. Plus you can get your LB & RB to support the attack to have more bodies when moving forward.

Try 4-3-3 Attack formation as CAM does the same here. IMO try putting in a regular midfielder (CM) as CAM and see how that works for you. So far I've seen that the actual player positioning plays a much more important role than what the player's default role is. So playing a CM as a CAM in 4-3-3 Attack would be much better than say playing 4-3-3 Defense formation with two CDMs.

Re: Which formation and tactics are you using?

442 has been good for me. It's not something I've ever really used in any other FIFA.

The Monaco and Levekusen tactics are both really effective (though different). I got a bit bored of both of them, so I moved over to using Dortmund's 433, slow, patient build up.
