Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
I guess my reflexes are simply way too slow. The defenders seem to jump on me as soon as I get the ball and i simply never get enough time or space to perform moves.
The only move I rely on is that while sprinting or running down the wing, I let go of LS and press L1 to stop and that gives me time to either pass the ball to another player or to cross the ball in to the box. But this approach only works when you are on the wings and not in the middle of the pitch or when you are in or around the box area. That's why most of my goals in World Class difficulty come either from Corners or Crosses.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
You just have to practice (in game!) and figure out when to use these moves. Add them to your game one by one. I would start with the fake + change direction move because it's a move that is useful all over the field. It's the move that I use the most.
Here's one way I use this move: Using the 4231 narrow, my winger is sometimes near the corner of the penalty box and will only have the fullback marking him. The fullback won't close you down immediately. While there is a little bit of space between your left winger and the fullback, flick the RS to the player's right and immediately move the other direction towards the goal line. The fullback will always bite on the fake and lean toward your right. Now that you have some space, you can take a shot, cross/pass, and even use this skill move again to cut inside.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
This guy's two videos describes a few useful moves. It's just useful ones, not a video full of stuff that's just fluff. The second one with the "No Touch" moves I've found most useful.Steam: BahnzoComment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
2 most useful skill moves against the AI, I've found are:
Body feint - flick the RS to the left or right of your players, use the left stick to exit whatever direction. Keep the exit direction under 90 degrees and you'll keep your speed up
Step over - quarter rotation of the RS, from the front, to left or right. Exit with the LS int he other direction, keep this under 90 degrees.
The step over gives you a huge speed burst. I use it on the wings from a standstill, it will give you a step of space to get the cross in. It's also really useful with your midfielders to break down a packed defence. Again, I do it from a standstill and it gets past the first defender. I'll typically try to exit on the the strong foot and smack an OP long shot.
Either of those 2 moves in the open field on the counter attack are useful as well.
Both are 2* skills, so anyone can do them.
After you get those down, then learn the fake shot. From a stand still, while dribbling with the ball or as a first touch.
Those 3 are all you really need. Everything else is for show.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
The biggest hurdle for me learning to use skill moves is camera related. The controls listed in the menu assume be a pro camera, and the practice pitch uses that camera, but who actually uses that camera in game action?Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
The problem I face now is that I'm able to pull off a move or two in the skills challenge with nobody around but the moment I play a match with defenders around I tend to be too late or don't really know when to use the skill move as I lose the ball everytime I use skill move with defenders around.
It would really help if 'Practice Arena' allows you to select your preferred in game camera and also allow you to face off against a defender if you so choose.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
I can second the post above, use the Advanced Shooting skills challenge and practice there, it is a lot of 1v1s, 1v2s, 2v2s. Also, on top of ball roll and stepovers, I would recommend Heel Flick, the Roulette, and Berba/McGeady spin. Fake shot is key though, incorporate that as it is one of the easiest and most effective moves.51 & 55

Anything for when I have my back to the goal? I've been really frustrated when in this situation.

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
I have a way out for you as I faced the exact same challenge... go to 'Skills Challenge' and use the 'Shooting Skills Challenge' instead. I think it's the first or second skill challenge in the list. Instead of taking a shot simply dribble around and practice skill moves. If you accidentally take a shot and run out of time, retry the drill.

Just last night I made an amazing goal using the Berba spin that was a thing of beauty. I use that, ball roll, and fake shot.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
I follow a similar approach, i.e. focus only on one skill move at a time. I guess the problem is that I've moved on to World Class difficulty and on this level the defenders are on to you like a rash. I guess I need to lower the difficulty level to Pro or Semi-Pro and then focus on skill moves. When I nail a couple down, I can up the difficulty level back to the current one.Comment

Re: Help with dribbling and beating a defender
Thanks, this is one I've overlooked and it does work well. Just needs some practice.
Anything for when I have my back to the goal? I've been really frustrated when in this situation.
It's probably been mentioned, but just start using one move at a time. What I've done, is write the move instructions on a sticky note and paste it to the monitor so that I have a constant reminder to work on this move. Eventually it'll come naturally.
Personally, I try to play a slow possession game. If there's space, I usually press LB/L1 as the ball comes in to face up to goal. From there, it's the before mentioned step over.
BTW, if you're a little off on the step over controls, you'll end up doing the reverse step over and double touch exit, which looks nice when it works, but it usually ends up with the defender running straight through you and taking the ball.Comment
