Can someone explain the logic behind a release clause?

Who does it benefit the player or the team?

Should I be adding them into contracts or not?

It benefits the player. I try to never add them unless the player will only sign because of one.

The reason for it is so a club can't put an unreasonable amount on a player and keep him against his will. Players with high potential can sign for a lesser team and know if he reaches his highest potential he can move to a big club without his current club stopping it.

It doesn’t really benefit the club because they can lose a player for less than his value if his release clause is quite low.

It isn’t really standard practice to have a release clause in a contract in England whereas in Spain I think every club automatically adds a release clause to a player’s contract when he signs for a club.
