Beginner, love this game but I stink, HELP!!

I have picked up FIFA 19 via my Origin Premiere subscription. I figured I would give it a shot since I have seen so many people being obsessed with it over the years. Let me say one thing first, I LOVE THIS GAME!!

I have spent the last week out of the game watching games, reading up on Europe leagues, MLS, all kinds of stuff. This has became my new obsession I now have a better understanding of rules, transfers, how leagues work, etc. (Reason is, when you first turn on the game, all of that can be a little overwhelming in what is going on).

With all that being said, I am really bad at this game. I like to think of myself as a slightly above average gamer. After a little playing can get, at least, a small grasp of a game to feel like I have a solid control over it. Not this game. It could be a little where I am still getting used to how the game is played, but I could use some beginner tips in a major way.

I started on beginner and was scoring 10 goals in 10 minute half. That is not realistic. Bumped up to Professional and now can't even seem to get shots off on goal. Last night, moved down one step and still seem to have trouble. The CPU is consistently getting shots off, but I feel like I'm not even getting past midfield.

So any tips would be very welcome and appreciated from you guys that have been playing awhile. I'm not looking to dominate every game, I am just trying my best to feel like it is the teams that are beating me, not my lack of skill.
    Thanks ahead of time!

easy quick tip: Stay at professional.
go to the sliders and lower the man marking for the CPU. (around 35)
and go from there: if it's too easy for you, increase the man marking, still too hard, lower it.
after a few games, you should find the right balance for you

Watch some fifa youtubers. You could improve by just watching them play and some of these youtubers provide all kinds of helpful tips.

Thanks for these early tips. I will move back up to Professional and find my sweet spot there.
Also, have been digging around YouTube this morning. Hope fully, I can get some good tips there also.

It's crazy how much I have gotten into this. It is one of those things where I wonder how I could have missed how great this sport is all this time. Anyways, thanks for the tips!!

I feel the same as you. I got FIFA 18 a few months ago and I love it. I am excited to get 19 as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning a new game. I’ve been watching a ton of Youtube videos to try and figure it all out as well. From formations to tactics, there is a lot to learn, and I am enjoying every minute of it. I actually started a career with the Wolves and got fired because I’m trying to learn on the fly and was struggling to win. It was awesome.

Youtube has been really helpful as well as just some generic google searches on the best formations and tactics have been helpful to me. I have been playing on professional level and it has been tough at times. Although, I feel like I am getting better by the game.

Also, my wife got me PES 2019 for my birthday, and it is a great game as well. I’m having just as much fun with it. I’m still trying to decide which I like better. I’m leaning towards FIFA, but I need to check out 19 before I make my final decision.

Good luck to you. Let us know what you learn that works for you.

You need to work the ball around and set up plays. Don't just run and gun up the pitch. Use L1/LB when passing to get the previous ball carrier to pass the ball and immediately go on a run and work the ball back to him when making runs. Make sure you play to the tactics you have set up

That's the one thing I have to learn is tactics and what they truly are. I have a simple grasp but need to have a better understanding of it. YouTube is helping.

@KidsareAsleep, I will keep in touch on what I figure out Also, checked you out a couple of times streaming Madden, good stuff!

Im like the OP. Been playing fifa for years offline but truly never really took the time to really understand the game. My game is more like sprint along the wings, cross it, hopefully it goes in on a header.

I really like the game this year and will spend time in learning how to really play and get good. And the hard part about this game is there are so many moves you can make it's hard to keep track of all of them.

I really could use help with the whole rules/transfers/how leagues work. I played the opening game with Ronaldo when you first turned it on (I think it was my default FIFA 18 setting which shows Professional) and I won in the second extra period 3-2. So I felt like that’s probably a good skill level for me to compete on but I don’t really understand strategies or any of that. Any YouTube channels ya’ll recommend? I really like the franchise mode format that you see with Madden/NBA 2K/MLB The Show on YouTube.

Also don't know anything about tactics. I'll say this, I've bought FIFA a couple of times in the past, I've played a little here and there where I know the very basics about the controls, I've been to a couple of soccer games before so I kind of have an idea of what's going on, but I don't have any kind of broad understanding of any of it.

Honestly, I am digging through just online research about transfers in general, not just FIFA. It was kinda hard for me to wrap my head around too (It's totally different from our US sports) One thing I did was started a career with a MLS team. Helped me have the game slow down a little. Also, I did stick it back to Professional and turned down Marking for the CPU to 35, made a world of difference. Feels really good, just still not good at shooting goals, but getting WAY better on defense. Games are ending in 1-0 loss..or 0-0 ties. I am getting more shots on the goal now..just not hitting.

Also, I will post some YouTube videos and such I find. A lot of it is Ultimate team stuff, not really my deal.

Step 1: Play on beginner until you can figure out how to create flow and perform moves.

Step 2: Avoid the MLS, it's trash for a reason.

Step 3: Grab Premier League or La Liga, those are the most straightforward.

Step 4: Once you master the moves move to professional with marking tweaked to your liking.

Do NOT watch YouTube because you'll just become a problem. You can exploit what every FIFA is doing and turn it into ping pong, the complete misrepresentation of real soccer. If you learn from the people who exploit it you'll only know how to do it and the next thing you'll be fighting with people who actually like soccer to keep it the ping pong instead of the actual sport.

Do you have BeIn Sports on your TV package? They have condensed games called 90 in 30. It's all the important plays in the game, watch that and learn how real teams play. There's also a show called Keys and Grey, watch that to learn more about the sport and how it works.

Hey don't say that about the MLS! It can be fun to play on lower level leagues. Fifa even has a lot or all of MLS stadiums and its tv broadcast presentation. For beginners, I do recommend playing with elite teams with world class players. It can be frustrating(in a good way for fifa veterans) to play with lower level players.

I think there's a lot of helpful videos on youtube, but yes most of them are related to Ultimate team/online play. I also recommend learning from watching real soccer games. This is what I did. Youtube is a good place to learn specific strategies and skill moves.

If you're a beginner, just focus on having fun. You don't have to think about playing in a realistic way or misrepresenting soccer. If you guys have any specific questions, I'd be happy answer them.

I just subscribed to ESPN+ which will have a lot of games for me to check out. Also thanks for the advice of starting on beginner and restarting with something other than MLS (I like watching MLS but get what you are saying).
