Re: FIFA 21 Trial Available Now on EA Play (EA Access/Origin) - Post Your Impressions

I've played seven matches with 10 minute halves on slow speed. Not a super sample size, but enough that I have impressions.

    Good:

    - There's a lot more hand-checking and general engagement between players this year.

    - On default sliders the AI actually makes bad passes!

    - More variety of attacking movement.

    - Better overall AI defence. The AI is in particular better at cutting out passes this year.

    - The AI seems to value the ball. In seven matches I've had less possession than the AI in all but one match, and in one of them even had less than 40% of the ball, which was unheard of last year. I could boss possession in every match last year win or lose.

-Being able to manually decline advantage is a huge change! No more purposely passing the ball away and hoping the ref is still going to give you the free kick.

    - More bad touches than last year on default sliders, but probably still not enough.

    - The career mode changes feel like more than just a coat of paint. Playing players in their proper position finally matters, the training mode is pretty decent and not as annoying as I feared, and (at least so far) the manager goals, particularly in the youth development area, seem better and more realistic.

    - If you play with handballs turned on, those have definitely been fixed. I've had quite a few called outside of the box, for and against. Inside the box, they seem to be calling it the same way they have been in the Premier League this season, which is to say maybe too much.

    Bad:

    - EA is still using the youth soccer model for goal kicks where everyone just lines up in formation.

    - Some of the player ratings are mindbogglingly bad.

    - Too many gaps to be exploited by through balls.

    - Shooting accuracy is way, way too high.

    In the middle:

    - They seem to have changed corner kicks. You can't really drive the ball anymore. Now the meter gives you a smaller variance in loft. Scoring from corners seems easier this year, but hopefully not too much. It's hard to say with my sample size.

Overall I'd say I'm pretty encouraged. Two of the four strong negatives can be fixed with sliders. I'll probably stick to my PES ML until the first community slider set comes out, but I feel like I'll get a lot of enjoyment from both games this year.

It seems to me like the ball is always glued to one player on the pitch and is never in "free flow" if you know what I mean.
You can always predict exactly where its going to be when you dribble or pass it.

The new dribble animations contribute heavily to that feeling and make everything looks super weird.

Besides from that everything else feels and looks the same, very stale. From the first minute you feel that EA didn't put any effort in this game and probably focused on the next-gen versions and probably Corona played its part as well that there were limited developments.

I'd love to check out the new features in career mode but with the gameplay being what it is I'm not even seeing the reason to waste any more time on this game.
There's a reason why Game Changer streamers are reluctant to playing matches and just only streaming pack openings.

          Pros:
-you can score headers and complete crosses
-CPU players don't stand idle or go stupid when you do a skill move
-The game feels better with more control of your player as they have slowed down the game speed
-Career mode changes are good and this amount of effort needs to be included every year

          Cons:
-CPU AI defence is weak. I won my second game, 4 min halves, 7-2 on legendary. Runs down the middle were not being tracked.
          - goalies aren't making saves like they should

Aha. It's some weird sport that I wouldn't exactly call football/soccer because the team aspect of the sport is not implemented. It's not an 11v11 thing. It's a 1v1 thing. Is this an early access/kickstarter project or is this how 8 year olds buying fifa points like it? Unfortunately, I was looking for a football/soccer game, with a midfield and teams defending as teams, my bad.

I'll check again in 2025, maybe.

Maybe by that time motion capture technology will also be available to small indie studios and players will not move around like they can't sort their feet out for 90 minutes.

You need to go via the regular store: this is where you'll find the option to download the trial.

How do tables look? Last year they patched it so great teams never lost.

Reading reviews on many websites, blogs and forums. As always many complains about cpu and team players ai. I agree with that, but my point of view is different. So here are my game thoughts so far.

First to say i dont play cm or fut. I play only kick off matches something like predictions. Take best matches of the day and play them. Main reason is many different leagues, trying many players and teams and i love it. I play like that since FIFA 13.

WHAT i really like is FUN. For me, its mistake that they are trying to create simulation. Why? Because when i want that i take ball and go outside and play simulation with my friends. I just want game to be fun. To have moments to remember. I dont care about ai or fouls.
My setup is on PRO, i dont play just to win, but to enjoy that specific match. I dont even attack cpu so much, i let them play a bit.
This game is so similar to last one but its updated. Many new stuff that i like, shoot ball into net after scoring goal. I see that there is a lot of random gameplay stuff, animations and random goals like reflecting shot from DF into goal, or by GK ant its superb. I had like 5 random goals in 10 games and i love it.

I dont know, found this game fun and love to enjoy every match. Also with new grass and goalnet settings game is now less repetitive or monotonous cause many generic stadiums have unique look with different teams.

And talking about good stuff (atmosphere, graphics etc) that little touch custom goalnets is fantastic. It makes game much less repetitive. I mean check Court Lane. Even with artifical turf and custom goalnet its different stadium.

                  Spoiler

Also i like when ball hit post goal movement

And after scoring goal now you can shoot ball into goalnet

Gameplay feels great and improved from last year to me.

The biggest disappointment and thing I have alot of issues with and really angers me is NO new leagues or adding of North American Champions League. Id love to know if in the history of FIFA, if they ever released a new game without any new leagues. Come on EA, just bad. I really also hope you add the North American CHampions LEague. Its long past due. Each year, you all just put alot of work into the MLS and its Broadcast stuff, but without that tournament it feels a waste to me. THis coming from a big MLS fan.

Oh well, please do add some new leagues for next gen.

I don’t see myself using an MLS team until they add the concacaf champions league.

Yeah I'm also curious about next-gen but it seems like they just worked on the graphics and didn't really go into AI / gameplay elements.

Really hoping for PES 2022 Next-Gen making a huge leap that puts FIFA under so much pressure that they start working on the fundamentals of the game.

I don't know what they did to the animations this year. Been playing FIFA excessively since FIFA 09 and I enjoyed it every year for a couple of weeks.
The two things that always annoyed me the most gameplay wise were the dribbling animations which always seemed a bit off and that the "tactical" part of the game hasn't improved at all over the last decade.

Attacks are always run exactly like in the playbook. If you started with FIFA 09 on Xbox 360/PS3 and skipped directly to FIFA 21 you'd still see the same running patterns after playing a few games. PES does this so much better, but PES has it's own flaws.
What really bugs me is that EA never really worked on this. Maybe because they dont wanna deter all the FUT/Online players who are just so used to attacks always being run the same way or they just lack the tactical knowledge on how to program the AI so the game feels more lifelike and diverse.

A huge disappointment but I didn't expect anything from EA. At least EA Play Pro allows me to test these games without paying the full price.

This is the first I've played FIFA since last winter. Been playing other, very high quality games in that time. It is so striking coming back to FIFA in that this game feels so outdated, not too mention just poor, relative to the great games we've had this year (and in recent years). The animation system especially is just awful.

Never before have I felt that this game needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, but this game feels way too poor to control for 2020. And don't get me started on the AI.

I might pick it up on the PS5, just out of curiosity to see what's improved, but right now this FIFA leaves me excited to see what PES can do after taking a year off. FIFA needs to do the same.

Quick thoughts after 3 games = Small sample size
(WC - 10min halves - Default sliders - Championship - League one teams)

                          The Good:
                          - AI dribble more
                          - AI Free kicks are no longer going in the 30th row..
                          - Saw more long shots than usual.
                          - Can adjust the pitch color.

                          The Bad:
                          - All players dribble like messi..
                          - Usual bugs before the 1st patches: player on the field without face, AI takes like 1 real time minute to take the penalty after an handball(happened to me 3 times) teams without sponsor on jersey, etc)

                          The Ugly:
                          - AI Crosses : gone..
                          - Midfielders: Not tracking back..

Does anyone know, if players having negative stats for playing their secondary position is a bug, or is it the way it's supposed to be?

Seems dumb to have a LW that has a LM as a 2nd position, getting -2 ovr for playing LM.

If this isn't a bug, what's the point in second positions?

Is this in career mode. If so it could be negative because the new match sharpness mechanic. I haven't heard any other mentions of problems with out of position players.

IMO you should be penalized since different positions require different skill sets in real life.

You get penalized in EA because they calculate overall rating based on your position and what attributes are more important for that position.
