I get that, but I'm not talking about a cm playing rb. Im talking about a rm, playing rw, and rw is listed as a secondary position.

Even if u change the players position through training, then put them in their old position, they drop in overall. How does that make sense?

I feel like I'm missing something with VOLTA it's better than it was last year but it doesn't really hold my attention. I'm talking the actual game not the stupid story mode where they insist on an british voice actor for your avatar. Maybe it's better playing multi player but playing it solo is meh. The presentation, the gameplay just bland.

Well there are a few different skills that are involved in each position. RM would use defensive stats as they often track back deeper whereas a RW would use more shooting stats.

Seems dumb to have a LW that has a LM as a 2nd position, getting -2 ovr for playing LM.

If this isn't a bug, what's the point in second positions?
In PES if a player has zone indicators on other parts of the field than his position, he can then be reassigned to that new position within his zone but when doing so will usually reduce his overall rating (85 > 79) but then leaving him there for a few games should increase his overall up again because he's learning to play that position. Has EA done this with players on second positions?

Love the game so much. Ran through my trial hours crazy fast.
            • Career mode is sick. So much depth. I spent 3-4 hours just getting everything set up. The sim feature is just incredible. Hopping in and out of matches feels great. The training/stamina re-work is great too. Finally we can choose to play our first team guys in every match if we want to. Very impressed.
            • Gameplay is so good. Animations are beautiful. Graphics are clean and impressive for current gen. And how it all feels is just really good. Players have a lot of weight to them. CBs actually respond to offensive players this year. Competitor mode is a great addition.

It's just a great all around game. On it's own is amazing, but thinking about how Career was so broken you couldn't even play for the first month or so last year makes this even more impressive. Really pumped for the game and I wish they would borrow Madden's decision to transfer Franchise files to next gen.

So....after the player trains to play the new position, then plays his old position (losing attribute points,) makes sense?

I understand what they are trying to do, but it's flawed. Im an ex college player. I started off as a CM, but got moved to ST. After learning the nuances of the ST position, I played a handful of times at my old position. I didn't play worse.

Only in FIFA can a player gain skill and knowledge and have it be a bad thing.

              Flawed logic.

I bet you did play worse. If you're not training in a specific position, you're unlikely to play to the best of your ability in that position. Even if its just being slightly out of position at times or not understanding the nuances of movement in that area of the field. Practise and repetition is so important in everything. As soon as you stop that, and especially when you start practising or repeating something else, you immediately become less efficient.

First off. You know nothing about me. 2nd....the point, is that the player is trained.

You spend 13 weeks (or whatever the game says,) training for the new position, you shouldn't regress when you play your old position.

How this is confusing baffles me.

I have been doing trial to try giving fifa 21 a fair shake in career mode, but had freeze during career mode happen multiple times where you cannot control players on field or button to advance, stuck with one player just walking and walking. Really strange. Huge problem. Tested a chelsea cm, happened again game 2 of season.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I understand it is:

The listed overall for that player is different based on the position, but none of their actual attributes have changed. Your left-wingers sprint speed, dribbling, crossing, standing tackle, defensive awareness, etc. will not have changed. But because which attributes are most critical may be slightly different for a LW then for a LM, their overall rating is different.

To take it to an extreme example; Kylian Mbappe is one of the best attackers in the world. Moving him to CB would not decrease his attacking skills but his overall rating would now be much lower because his attributes that are important at CB (defensive awareness, tackling, etc) are not very good.

I spent last year (and the previous 3 years) playing PES.
Whilst I always buy both games, to me FIFA has always been a bit of an arcade experience, centred around tricks and speed but no football sense.

Whilst tricks are still dominant and too easy to pull off, I think EA has done some good strides in terms of recreating a football match. Positioning of players has improved tremendously. Mechanics, animations and graphics aside, it does actually play like a real football game and everything is very intuitive in terms of what you want to do, what runs you expect to see in a given context and what player positioning makes sense in a given situation. In this department FIFA looks head and shoulders better than PES which is still a mess in terms of player positioning, runs, and overall enjoyment.

FIFA feels much more unpredictable and organic and if you reduce some of the attributes, such as pass accuracy and you pick two lower division teams, it really plays and looks scrappy (in a good way) - like a Sunday league game, with balls going astray, frequent turnovers and just a fun experience.

Where it falls flat on its face is in the graphics and animations department. Graphics-wise PES is unsurpassed - from player models, faces, details. PES is also more cinematic - scoring a goal in PES looks and feels amazing, whereas in FIFA it's a bit of an anticlimax - it just looks and feels lame, with players booting a ball in even from 2 metres instead of a tap in animation. Crosses also look strange, with the ball trajectory being a bit iffy. Animations are also weird, especially sprinting, defending, tacking and jostling. If just looks choppy and jittery somehow.

My hope is that the PS5 version would look a bit more organic and smooth in the animations department. If they can manage to do that, I would be a happy convert as PES continues to be very stale and frustrating.

There are some less important but still irritating things in FIFA - why can you not choose the time of kick off in Season mode? Also, the lighting is weird - it goes from super bright to very dim.
Lastly, there is a strange bug when you switch hand balls on and you concede a penalty via a hand ball. The camera zooms on your plater, then he goes into a tilt and starts trotting around for about 20 seconds. The first time it's funny, but it does it every time, which is clearly a bug.

Overall good job on the pitch, EA, but the game is in desperate need of smoother animations and better graphics. The ideal game would be graphics / animations from Konami and gameplay from FIFA.

I'm not actually sure. I just notice when I've trained a RM to be a RW, making RM his new secondary position, he gets a downgrade if he plays RM after a position change.

In a logical world after training in a new position, playing your old position would hurt an overall. But apparently I'm a moron for thinking that, lol.

Other than the position change stuff, my overall impression of (career mode at least) is good.

The amount of stuff you need to do now is incredible. I really like how training helps game performance more now, as opposed to overall ratings.

The additions of training specific attributes in the "set it and forget," is awesome. I play mainly youth squad rebuilds, and I can now train strength, weak foot, etc.

My only gripe with the training for in game performance, is that if you just sim the drill you get the lowest score everytime, unless you play the drill and get a higher score. So, if you do a dribbling drill and get an A, if you sim the drill after that, you will always get an A.

Part of my negative reaction to that, has to do with the fact I only have 10 hours with the trial. I can honestly see myself doing all the drills for 10 hours alone when I get full access, to get high grades.

All in all, this is the first year this generation, I feel like I'm actually upgrading from one Fifa to the next. Hopefully it won't take another decade to have this feeling again.

Game play wise, im not overly impressed, but I also don't want to judge to much, because I don't know how much the training for game performance messes with moments where defenders are lost, etc.
