Need help with freekicks and defending in 22

The Fifa game I played most (offline, manager career mode) was 17, and I was really good at scoring from freekicks, provided I used a player with decent skills for it. However, in 21 and now again in 22, I simply can't get any decent shots on goal on freekicks, and what's more, I don't even understand the in-game explanation of what I am expecetd to do. So, how does it work with that circle, which goes red the moment I hit the ball?

The second issue I have is on defense. When I try to make the defender I control tackle the player right next to him, I press the circle button on PS. But instead of a tackle by the controlled player, I get a green symbol over the head of a different defender. I have no idea and I cannot find out, why this is the case and which preset I need to change to make this go away.

It sounds like you are using times finishing on free kicks.

You can just hold down the shoot button once (the longer you hold it, the more potential there will be for inaccuracy) and the player will take the free kick. You can then try to press the shoot button again at the right time to get an increase in the power and precision if the kick. I assume you already know based on what you said but it's not 100% clear.

It sounds like you're pressing the button for a second time far too late. You need to press the button at the height of the player's backswing rather than as they contact the ball.

With regards to the defending, that just sounds like the icon to indicate who the next closest player to the ball is. If you switch player, that will be the player that you switch to.
