      Season 5

      The Mariners

      April 2021

      Grimsby Town 0 - 0 Watford FC
      MOTM: Santos

Fixture congestion again forced us to play a reserve side, and that led to very little action in this game from either side. Our defense was fairly impressive in keeping Watford at bay the entire game, and that was evident by Santos getting man of the match for his role in the center of the defense. We had better chances than they saw, and probably had a few that we could have done better on, but overall it was a fair result and I can't have too many complaints about it.

      Chelsea FC 2 - 0 Grimsby Town
      CFC - Bale 70', 80'
      MOTM: Bale

I honestly thought that this was heading for a draw, and then Gareth Bale happened. The highlight of the first half was Oscar hitting the post, but other than that no significant chances presented itself for either side. The second half looked to be more of the same until Bale chested a ball down on the edge of the box and then blasted his shot on the half volley into the top left corner. We pushed harder now that we were down, and that cost us when Bale used his pace to punish us on the counter and he had a simple finish around the keeper to double the lead.

      Champions League Quarterfinal Leg 1
      Grimsby Town 1 - 2 Arsenal FC
      GRI - Amang 10'
      ARS - Toral 22', Coman 42'
      MOTM: van Dijk

That was an absolute punch in the gut. Not only do we find ourselves in a deficit now for the second leg, but was gave away 2 away goals in the process as well. It was looking bright early when Hourihane was able to play Amang through on the left and he finished past the keeper to give us a lead. But the joy was not going to last and Toral found an equalizer after getting free in the box to get his head on the end of a cross and into the back of the net. Then before the half was over, Coman got the ball on the edge of the box and he took a touch to set himself up and then hit a well placed ball into the top left corner to give them the lead and put us into a giant hole that is going the be hard to escape from.

      Grimsby Town 2 - 3 Manchester United
      GRI - Osadebe 15', Cole 76'
      MUN - Sanches 23', Lingard 30', Martial 59'
      MOTM: Pogba

I made my bed, and it appears now that I have to lay in it. I chose to save my first choice players for the Champions league, and our first leg was disastrous. Now I have dropped my way out of first in the league, and I may end this season with no silverware at all. We were first to score with Osadebe cleaning up a rebound on a saved shot with a simple tap in. Sanches equalized though with a great back post run where Pogba was able to find him with a low ball for the tap in. Lingard then gave United the lead after he collected a ball that was cleared to the edge of the box and he let it fly from distance into the top left corner. Martial then extended the lead with Pogba sending another cross in and he found himself unmarked in the middle for the quick strike past the keeper. Cole pulled one back using his pace to get around the left and slot it home, and he almost found another late for the equalizer, but it was all too late and we had to take the loss.

Champion's League Quarter Final Leg 2
      Arsenal 0 (2) - (2) 1 Grimsby Town
      GRI - Sacko 43'

And that's it, we are officially eliminated from all but the league. As disappointing as this is, we have to be sure to finish out the season strong or else all of our efforts will have been wasted. We scored the only goal in this one, with Amang setting up Sacko for the quick finish on the near post. But the goal was meaningless in the end and it's Arsenal who will be advancing to the semi-finals now instead of us.

      Liverpool FC 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
      LFC - Markovic 38', Firmino 43'
      GRI - Wolf 90'
      MOTM: Amang

This month just gets worse and worse. We dropped yet another, and with City scheduled just 2 days from now and us having to play our reserves for that one due to fatigue, it doesn't seem like it will get any better. Liverpool beat us in a 5 minute span that started with Markovic firing a shot from outside of the box into the top right corner. Then a complete lapse in our defense resulted in Firmino getting a free header that should have easily been cleared out and he sent it into the back of our net instead. We pulled one back with Wolf, but it was the last kick of the match giving us no chance to build on it.

      Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Manchester City
      GRI - Cole 25', Kelly 49', Konate 90'
      MOTM: Cole

I can honestly say that I was expecting the worst from this considering our recent form, but these players went out there and gave everything they had. Cole scored first with Vieira playing the ball to him on the left and he was able to turn the corner and tuck it away. Cole then turned provider and he played Kelly down the right and he was able to fire it across the goal into the bottom left corner to double our lead. Finally in the final minute, our academy graduate Konate got on the end of a Kelly cross and his first effort was saved, but he recovered well to put the second attempt into the back of the net for his first senior goal in a Grimsby shirt.

        Season 1

        Club in Crisis

        April 2017

        Cheltenham Town 1 - 1 Blackpool FC
        CHE - De Girolamo 34'
        BLP - Redshaw 88' (PEN)
        MOTM: Redshaw

If not for some terrible work in goal by our keeper, we would have grabbed a win. De Girolamo was first to the ball after some unlucky bounces off of a deflection and he fired it right past our keeper's leg on the near post and it really should have been kept out. Luck turned back in our favor at the end though and in the dying minutes the referee pointed to the spot and awarded us a penalty. Redshaw stepped up to it and fired it into the bottom left corner just past the keeper's reach.

        Blackpool FC 4 - 1 Morecambe FC
        BLP - Vassell 44', 60', Taylor 82, Philliskirk 90'
        MOR - Seager 30'
        MOTM: Daniel

It was nice to get our attack firing, especially with so few games remaining and we are trying to fight our way into a playoff spot. Morecambe opened it up though with a great bit of passing leading to a low cross played into the middle where Seager was on hand to direct it into the back of the net. Just before the half we got out on the counter and Daniel played Vassell through on the left and he was able to beat the keeper for the equalizer. Vassell then added a second after McAlister played him through and he finished with a well place shot once again to give us the lead. Our pressure continued and after earning a corner, Daniel played it in and Taylor was able to rise up and power a header just past the keeper. Morecambe desperately tried to get one back and sent their keeper up on a corner, but we were able to clear it out and Philliskirk raced down the field to get to it first and continued on to finish it into the open net and cap off our win.

        Hartlepool United 1 - 1 Blackpool FC
        HAR - Palombi 2'
        BLP - Philliskirk 15'
        MOTM: Philliskirk

If only we hadn't have lost our concentration at the start, we could have gotten so much more. Palombi got the ball on the edge of the box and he fired it from distance right between two defenders who were right on him and it flew into the top left corner. It wasn't long before we found our answer and Vassell played the ball to Philliskirk outside of the box and he took advantage of the defender over committing and turned around him towards goal and slotted it into the bottom corner for the equalizer. We had some good chance to find a winner, but we weren't clinical enough and had to settle for a draw.

        Blackpool FC 1 - 2 Crewe Alexandra
        BLP - Daniel 59'
        CRE - Lowe 70', Hawkins 86'
        MOTM: Lowe

An absolute collapse on our end and this could be catastrophic in terms of our playoff chances now. Our goal came off of a corner and Daniel was able to get above the defense and head it down under the keeper and in for the lead. We then got caught on an overlap and they sent a cross in to the back post where Lowe was completely unmarked and tapped it in easily. We then got caught on the counter in the closing minutes and they were able to get it to Hawkins in space and he fired it inside the near post for the winner.

        Portsmouth FC 0 - 2 Blackpool FC
        BLP - Evans 24' (OG), Elliott 39'
        MOTM: McAlister

This was a massive win against a team that sits in that last precious playoff spot that we are looking to take. This will move us ahead of them now, and depending on Doncaster's results, it could put us in 7th with just a single game left to play. We got our fist off of a corner where Daniel sent the ball in and Evans in his hasty attempt to mark his man got there first, but sent it into his own net. Then before the half was over, McAlister played Elliott through on the right and he took his shot well and placed it into the bottom left corner. After that we were able to sit back and control the game while they became more and more desperate for a goal that was never to come.

        Blackpool FC 2 - 1 Barnet
        BLP - Philliskirk 13', Vassell 60'
        BAR - Nicholls 56'
        MOTM: Philliskirk

Tired, bruised, battered, we had to throw our same XI out there in order to give ourselves a chance to win. These men were tired beyond measure, but they dug down and found that extra gear that was needed and got us into the playoffs. McAlister was able to play Philliskirk down the right and he finished back across the goal to give us an important lead. It was erased in the second half though after a shot from Barnet hit off the crossbar and Nicholls scaled over our defender to head in the rebound for an equalizer. But the heart of this team showed itself once again when Philliskirk was able to get the ball to Vassell and he struck a fantastic shot from the left side of the box across the goal and into the top right corner.

                Notts County April 2020 Update

This month saw us in league play take a few draws and a lost that put us second in league play. Now we are behind an excellent Man U side. With one month left we are one point from first.

In Europa league play we were up against Bayer in the semi final round. In the first leg it was hammer and tongue and neither team gained ground. So we ended in a 0-0 draw. The second leg was the same way. But this team was drained after being in so many competitions it finally caught up to us. We bowed out 2-0 after a remarkable run. The lads were very down. Hopefully we can overcome this emotion to make one last rally at Man U.

                  Notts County May 2020 Update

                  Will Notts Make History

The month of May had five final league matches, with it all coming to a league ending and determining match at Old Trafford to conclude the season.

We he first four matches saw us split two wins a draw and a loss. We were still one point away from Man U going into this final match. The atmosphere at Old Teafford was crazy. The match was fierce as team teams battled for Premier League Supremacy. We jumped out with howlitzer into the top right corner to take the lead. Man U didn't waste time to respond tying the match at 1-1. They didn't stop there they scored again to go to 2-1. We rallied the lads and were able to tie the match. Man U was dertermined this day not to go down so they put in the back of the net the match winning, Premier League winning goal to win 3-2. We finished a grueling campaign that had us finish second in the league.

                    Season 5

                    The Mariners

                    May 2021

                    Grimsby Town 1 - 1 Everton FC
                    GRI - Hourihane 45'
                    EVE - Joselu 71'
                    MOTM: Kessie

We can't afford to be losing our focus on defense, and that is exactly what we did. What should have been 3 important points, turned into 1 after we allowed an equalizer due to poor defending. We took the lead at the end of the first half when Kessie played Hourihane around the left and he finished across the goal to the far post. Then in the second half Everton got the ball out on the right wing and dribbled around until he found some space to send a ball in and Joselu ran right past his defender who seemed to have lost him and got the easy tap in for the costly equalizer.

                    Grimsby Town 0 - 1 Stoke City
                    STK - Shaqiri 37'
                    MOTM: Diekmeier

That should effectively end our title hopes, and our title defense that looked so promising for so long has now crashed and burned in the final two months. Their goal came from a cross into the box that our defender tried to clear it with an overhead kick and missed it allowing it to fall right to a Stoke player's feet and he played it to Shaqiri right away and his shot was partially saved by the keeper, but the momentum carried it across the line and that was enough as our attack was missing for the entirety of the match.

                    Southampton FC 2 - 4 Grimsby Town
                    SOU - Austin 10', Seager 90'
                    GRI - Amang 13', 16', Wolf 82', Sacko 89'
                    MOTM: Amang

This was the win we needed, and even though it came too late to make our title push, a loss here would have put our Champion's League qualification in jeopardy. It started off shaky though with Austin getting past our defense in an almost identical goal to what we gave up against Everton and grabbed an early lead. But we had not only erased that, but then took a lead of our own by the 16th minute with Amang cleaning up two blocked shots and putting them into the back of the net. Then in the closing minutes we put it away with a goal first from Wolf from the left side and then Sacko from the right side, both finishing across to the far post with their shots. Seager grabbed an impressive consolation goal by banging one in from distance, but it made no difference to the result.

                    Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Newcastle United
                    GRI - Amang 7', Wolf 10', Hourihane 76'
                    NEW - Perez 62'
                    MOTM: Kessie

We were able to end the season on a high note, and while it wasn't what we were hoping for after the miracle run we had last season, we were able to hold Arsenal in the end to take a vital top 4 spot. We got off to a quick start and Kessie played Amang through on the right and he kept his shot low and across the goal to the far post. And then just minutes later it was Hourihane playing Wolf around the left side and he finished with a well placed shot of his own into the bottom right corner. In the second half Newcastle threatened to make a game out of it after a missed tackle let Perez through on goal and he left no doubt with his finish. We got some relief though as the referee pointed to the spot and Hourihane tucked the penalty into the bottom left and all we had to do was see out the match.

We hoped to get more, but the bright side is that we did avoid giving up any away goals. We had the majority of the chances, doubling their shot attempts and recording 60% of the possession for the match. Still, nothing resulted in anything too positive for us and it all comes down to the away leg now to decide who moves on to the final.

We are going to the final for a shot at promotion! This one was played much like the first leg, but we had a number of quality chances that just kept coming up short. Every time Plymouth had a good looking opportunity, our defense was able to get in front of everything and in the end that had no shots on goal. Extra time looked probable, and in the 86th minute Plymouth earned a corner. We were able to clear the corner up the field and somehow Vassell got behind their defense and was first to the ball with no one between him and the keeper. He attacked straight at him and at the last second slotted it around him into the bottom left corner to send us to the final.

Thanks! The Grimsby ending was a let down for sure after leading the table for most of the season. The combination of league, FA, and Champions League games cost me a lot of points because of rotation and I didn't end up winning any of them which sucked haha. I still had a shot going into the last month if I won out, but dropped points in the first 2 games, although Chelsea ended up winning out and it would have only moved me up to 2nd in the end if I won those so that makes it a little better.

Blackpool on the other hand was a fun ending to the season. I finally got my defense sorted some and my attack got firing at the right time. In the playoffs I completely shut it in and focused defensively as you can tell by a 1-0 aggregate for the semi-final. The only goal actually came off of a cleared corner that ended up with my striker past their defense somehow. I did the same in the final but I did manage to grab a couple of goals as well even though I wasn't committing fully to the attack. Next season will be interesting though since I think I am probably going to have to sell my striker and possibly some others depending on offers.

Overall we had a successful season, but the way we ended it was certainly disappointing. We were able to exceed most of our expectations the board laid out, but we did come up short on the financial aspect as well.

First, the youth objective is a 2 year goal that will be dependent on how many games Patrice Konate can play in next season for us. If he plays 50% of our games, then we will meet the goal.

The brand exposure goal was to have £6,800,000 from shirt sales. We smashed that in the first two months I think, with the signings of Caulker, Wolf, Kamada, Kessie, and Paterson all bringing in huge chunks.

Financially is where we came up short. The board wanted us to end the season with £6,800,000 in unspent transfer and wage funds. However, I chose to sacrifice this goal in order to improve the squad in the midfield and defense and try to strengthen our weak points.

Domestically the board wanted us to finish in the mid table, and to reach the round of 32 for the FA Cup. We had our chance to actually win the league this year for the second time in a row, but we ended up settling for 4th, still way above what the board was asking for. In the F.A. Cup we were knocked out in the quarter final to West Ham.

Our continental objective was to reach the group stage, and that was accomplished as soon as the season started since we had finished top of the Premier League the season before. We ended up making it all the way to the quarter finals before we were knocked out by Arsenal.

The board laid out several objectives for us at the start of the season, and I am proud to say that we went above and beyond what was asked of us.

In terms of our youth objectives, the board wanted us to sign a defender to compensate for our lack of players in those positions, and we added two center backs to the academy during this year. The other objective was to sign 2 players younger than 20 years old that had greater potential than our current players of that position. We added both Jamie Bennett and Elliott Murphy to the senior team at the end of the year from our academy, and the both have promising looking careers ahead of them.

Our brand exposure goal was to sign a crucial first team forward. At the start of the season we identified and brought in Tom Elliott from Wimbledon, and that signing paid off in a huge way. Elliott led the team in scoring, grabbing 20 goals overall in the campaign.

Finances were identified as the most important of all the objectives, and we were given to goals to aim for in that category. The first was to finish the season with £2,550,000 of unspent transfer and wage funds. We were able to accomplish this and still improve our squad at the same time by selling Mark Cullen at the start of the season, and also selling Sam Slocombe in January after he had a productive first half of the season and attracted interest from higher leagues. The other goal laid out for us to keep player salary growth under 20% and we actually reduced our wage bill with the sale of those two players mentioned above as compared to the two we brought in.

Lastly, our domestic objectives were to fight for promotion in the league, reach the round of 32 in the FA cup, and to gain automatic promotion within 2 seasons. For a while it looked like we were going to fall short, but we turned it on at the end of the season and fought our way into the playoffs. We then continued that run and ended up earning promotion, which canceled out the 2 year goal they had laid out for us. We also reached the round of 32 in the FA cup and we were eliminated at that point meaning that we just barely accomplished what they expected from us in that regard.
