In the ninth minute, Ian Sweeney is taken off with an ankle injury but ten minutes later Dean Ebbe angles a great cross along the ground for Eric Foley to slide and prod the ball past the keeper for the lead. Dean Ebbe has a shot outside the box but he’s tackled unfairly and his shot skews wide. A free-kick is given and left-back, Derek Doyle decides to take it. He smashes the ball off the underside of the crossbar and it bounces over the line to put Athlone two in front. Four minutes later and a corner’s whipped in by Ebbe. The ball goes to Foley who’s made a great run to get away from his marker and he heads it into the bottom corner. Gorman sprints down the right wing with eight minutes left and he back-heels the ball to Roddy Collins who crosses it in first time and the it dips onto the head of Eric Foley who glances the ball off the post and past the line for his first hat-trick!

If Athlone win this game, they will be out of the relegation zone with four games remaining... Potential starting XI striker, Dean Ebbe has furthered his cause with a hard-earned goal. A pass by Garreth Brady is cut out but Ebbe wins the ball back and finds himself with enough space inside the box to smash it past the keeper for an early one-nil lead. Awful defending allows Aaron Wildig through on goal and the ball is tucked into the bottom corner and past a helpless Shane Cusack. In the last minute, Philip Gorman breaks into the box and smashes the ball at the keeper. Athlone’s Player of the Month Goes To:

Ebbe’s scored twice in four games and has provided an impressive three assists in the Oxford game alone. He has made the strongest case for the highly contested striker spot and will hold in going into the last month of the season.
Manager’s Thoughts:
I was expecting Oxford to be one of our biggest challenges but they turned out to be a shambles at the back and managed to concede three goals in thirty-six minutes. Our defence is working well together and we gained two clean sheets this month and only conceded twice in the other two games.
After a great run of games, we’ve finally escaped the relegation zone. The owners have given me confidence that they will be able to support me next season to ensure that we get off to a good start next season. It’s definite that we will not be relegated with seven points between us and the danger zone with two games left.
The last two games will not be any different to this month. We need to get as high in the table as possible to prove our worth in our new league.
Fixtures in May:
02/05: Luton Town (A)
