    '20-'21 August Update

    The Roster
    Spoiler

    Starting XI (4-4-2 Diamond Wide)

    Cillessen (85)

    Al Shahrani (79)/Zouma (85)/Vlaar (79)/Amavi (78)

    Pogba (89)

    Farfán (C, 79) ------------------ Guerreiro (79)

    Gordon (79)

    Ambrose (79) ------- Ringdal Støvland (75)

    Transfer News
    • Bondz Laslie (CB, 69 OVR) loaned on short-term to Dagenham.
    • Harry Maguire (CB, 76 OVR) sold to Southampton for €6.5 million.

    League Match 1
    Watford - Newport County (1-2)
    Deeney 15'
    Zouma 63' (Farfán)
    Farfán 83' (pen)

    Amavi 45'
Gordon 50' (sprained ankle, out 3 weeks)

Kurt Zouma scored in his first official game for the club and Bondz Moore wrecked havoc off the bench to gain a penalty kick for his side and The Exiles got their season started with a clutch come-from-behind win at Vicarage Road. Zouma had had a chance to even up the score in the 33rd minute off a corner kick but his header was saved at the goal line by a Watford defender. The same method worked in Zouma's favor in the 63rd minute thanks to another well executed CK by Jefferson Farfán. Moore, playing a bench role for the first time since 2017, came off the bench a man possessed and giving Watford defenders all kinds of trouble. It didn't take him long to beat his defender on the left wing and into the box where he was tackled late, giving Farfán the chance to score the game-winner which the skipper didn't waste. The somber note of the day for Newport County was Gordon's injury although it should only keep him out for a couple of games.

    Transfer News
    • Satoshi Kagome (CDM, 63 OVR) sold to Brescia for €625K.
    • Daniel Seager (CM, 68 OVR) loaned on short-term to Exeter City.

    League Match 2
Newport County - West Ham (3-0)
    Pogba 18' (Ambrose)
    Guerreiro 81' (Nabiullin)
    Ringdal Støvland 90+'

The Exiles dominated this game from beginning to end and scored a couple of late goals to have the score properly reflect that to wrap up a successful home opener. Paul Pogba, moving to CAM in Gordon's absence (with Rohan Ince starting at CDM) treated the home fans to his first official goal with the club inside of 20 minutes. Newport County managed the game from there holding West Ham to just three shots, none on target. Late in the game Elmir Nabiullin fed Raphaël Guerreiro with a wonderful pass to leave him one-on-one against the goalie near the small box for the second goal, then Ringdal Støvland wrapped up a great individual effort by finally scoring his goal in stoppage time in his fourth shot of the game (all on target).

Pogba celebrates his goal in classic Pogba style.

Guerreiro wasn't going to miss from such short range for his first goal with the club.

    League Match 3
Manchester City - Newport County (1-0)
    Zuculini 34'

City's B-squad did an outstanding job of keeping this a midfield game and managed the game well after their 1-0 lead to hold that as the final score. The game stalled in the middle of the field for the majority of this match as the teams combined for just three shots a piece. City was able to break The Exiles' defense down in one of their occasions to get Bruno Zuculini an open net goal that would make all the difference.

    Transfer News
    • Konsta Salo (CAM, 77 OVR) sold to Liverpool for €19.5 million.
    • Patrick Miller (ST, 70 OVR) sold to Blackburn Rovers for €2.4 million.
    • Jasper Cillessen (GK, 85 OVR) acquired from Olym. Lyonnais for €23 million.
    • Joe Allen (CM, 78 OVR) acquired from Liverpool for €6 million.

    ______________________________________

    League Match 4
Newport County - Manchester Utd (1-1)
    Ambrose 11' (Farfán)
    Dobnik 80'

Cillessen came really close to playing hero in his Exiles' debut but a scramble in the box off a corner kick left him in no-man's land and unable to stop Dobnik's shot in the 80th minute. The Red Devils did a good job of edging Newport County in possession and scoring opportunities.

    Transfer News
    • Bill Hamid (GK, 76 OVR) sold to Hull City for €8.5 million.
    • Gary Woods (CM, 69 OVR) loaned on short-term to Blackburn Rovers.

Analysis: The transfers made during this window are definitely a big topic for discussion so let's dig into those first. From July to August the deals for Lapslie and Maguire were in the works and weren't much of a surprise. Southampton identified Maguire as someone down on Marccelino's pecking order and bought low on the English defender. Brescia got a really good deal on Kagome who has the potential to become the best player on their roster if he's developed properly. The real juicy stuff took place in the week between the games against the Manchester squads: Liverpool negotiated long and hard for Konsta Salo, an Exiles' academy graduate with exciting potential, and eventually worked out a deal to acquire his services. When Newport County acquired Bill Hamid last summer they had always had in mind that the American goalkeeper was their transitional solution until and if they could acquire a world class player at the position. That opportunity came a lot sooner than expected thanks to the funds the club earned from Salo's and Maguire's sales in addition to the budget transferred over from July, and the club capitalized on that with Cillessen's acquisition. Marccelino then was frank with Hamid and confirmed the Dutch goalkeeper would take over as the starter. Hamid did not request to be transferred but did accept interest in a move on a case by case basis and Hull City provides a great opportunity for him. The Exiles then put a perfect stamp on their transfer window by replacing Salo with an experienced, Welsh, title-hungry Allen who is a perfect fit on the roster. Salo has the potential to become a better player than Allen ever was, but Allen is a better player at this point in time and bridges the gap as Gordon's backup until the club's top prospect (Daniele Martella) is ready to take over that role.

Performance-wise The Exiles weren't too bad either outside of a tough loss at the Etihad Stadium. Newport County rolls into this season with an exciting roster on paper, though it may take those new pieces some time to gel. At this point the Euro League group draws have taken place and Marccelino's squad is joined by Real Sociedad, Standard Liège, and FC Zürich in Group G where they most certainly will be expected to advance to the Round of 32.

    The Academy
(listed by their ranking in it)

LW - Marcos Andrade (64 OVR, 89-94 POT): 16-year old GEM from Portugal, a physically-gifted player with a balanced game who is entrenched as the top prospect in the academy and one of the best overall prospects on the roster.

RB - Johan Sheriff (62 OVR, 85-91): This 17-year old from Sweden is our 2nd-ranked prospect in the youth squad. He possesses ideal size (6'2" 174lbs) to go along with excellent development of his physical skills (81 aggression, 78 strength, 75 jumping) and he has shown the ability to pick up the defensive game quickly so far in the academy.

CDM - Pierre Tägtström (51 OVR, 83-89): This 15-year old from Sweden is now officially next in line in a great lineup of defensive midfielders developed by the club since Marccelino's arrival. Described as physically strong, Tägtström's exciting potential is undeniable at this point. He displays excellent aggressiveness (83) towards the ball. At his age and with the club's depth at the position he should be able to spend time developing in the academy without any rush.

LW - Andre Domingues (51 OVR, 77-83): 15-year old from Portugal who is raw but exhibits great potential. His top attribute at this time is his pace (73acc/68spd).

CF - Jordan Davies (52 OVR, 73-79): 16-year old from England described as physically strong and measuring at 5'5", 154lbs. He may not be more than a backup in the future but he flashes a natural ability to play in the air (79 jumping) to go with some pace (75acc/73spd).

ST - Mikael Weilid (54 OVR, 72-80): 17-year old from Sweden with excellent physical skills (78 jumping, 73 stamina, 73 aggression) and pace (75spd/74acc) to with a solid frame (6'0", 167lbs), so it'll be up to the youth scouts to develop his skills as a scorer.
    * Recent addition

Liam Taylor (ST, 62 OVR) was promoted to the senior roster following the transfer window to fill in as the team's backup striker for the B-squad following Miller's departure. Taylor shows great potential and is someone to watch for in the future.

    September Schedule
    9/5: vs Ireland (WC Qualifying)
    9/8: at Belgium (WC Qualifying)
    9/12: at Swansea City
9/17: vs Standard Liège (Euro Leage)
    9/20: vs Sheffield Wed
9/23: at Norwich City (Capital One Cup)
    9/26: at Liverpool

Marccelino will have a plateful next month as he starts it off with the beginning of European world cup qualifying at the helm of Hungary. It'll be a tall task as they will share a group with Italy, Belgium, Turkey, Ireland, and Austria. Hungary will host Ireland before visiting Belgium, who embarrassed them a couple of months ago at the Euro Cup, and it'll be interesting to see the Italian head coach make some adjustments as he moves to 3-4-3 diamond and a 5-3-2. Back with Newport County they'll face 5 different opponents over 3 different competitions in the course of 2 weeks so it'll be interesting to see how the manager handles playing time, with the club's B-squad assured to make at least one appearance.

    Thanks for reading!

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

      Season 1

      The Mariners

      November 2016

      FA Cup
      Wycombe Wanderers 0 - 0 Grimsby Town
      MOTM: Boyce

We were lucky to force a replay on this one, and Wycombe dominated the chances against us. Henderson was able to keep them off of the score sheet though and that was enough to avoid watching us crash out of the FA Cup right away. The replay will be on our home field so we need to use that to our advantage to find a way through to the next round.

      Checkatrade Trophy
      Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Luton Town
      GRI - Vose 29'
      MOTM: Pearson

Well, this is one that we probably won't be able to get away with again. We registered just a single shot on goal in the entire game, but we made that one shot count. Vose scored off of a nice header from a corner kick, and the game was pretty uneventful from then on for both sides in terms of chances. But, we are through so there's not a whole lot that we can complain about in the end.

      Plymouth Argyle 1 - 1 Grimsby Town
      PLY - Spencer 14'
      GRI - Boyce 27'
      MOTM: Carey

We deserved to get beat in this one, but I will gladly take the point we earned. They had the lions share of the chances and really took it to us throughout the match. They got on the score sheet early after a bad tackle left Spencer with an easy shot for the lead. Fortunately we pulled it back after Chambers made a great run to win a corner and Boyce headed the ensuing corner kick home. After that we held on after a succession of great saves by our keeper for an undeserving point.

      FA Cup Replay
      Grimsby Town (4) 0 - 0 (1) Wycombe Wanderers
      MOTM: Berrett

Wycombe came at us strong trying to take this one, but Henderson was up to the test in goal stopping anything they put on frame. On the other end we were unable to trouble their keeper as well and after two scoreless halves and two scoreless extra time periods, we were going to have to decide this one by penalties. Their first two penalty takers sent their shots wide and each one of our players that stepped up buried the ball in the back of the net. Vose put the final one in to secure the win and allow us to advance to the next round of the FA Cup.

      Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Cheltenham Town
      GRI - Vernon 31', 74' (PEN), Jackson 67'
      CHE - Holman 15'
      MOTM: Vernon

We finally matched an opponent shot for shot and the result was obvious on the score sheet. After Cheltenham scored early our attack found its groove and we equalized with a Vernon header off of a corner and then took the lead with Jackson scoring off of another. Then we all but put it away with a penalty that Vernon converted easily to double the lead. After that we just saw the match out and it was a good win to get in front of our home fans.

      Yeovil Town 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
      YEO - McLeod 82'
      GRI - Bogle 31', Browne 79'
      MOTM: Bogle

We dominated possession and made them have to play quick and on the counter leading to them having a decent amount of shots, but generally wild and off target. On the other end we took our chances well and Bogle opened up the scoring after tackling away the ball and going through on goal. Browne then double the lead after Chambers set him up nicely. After that we had a defensive lapse that allowed a free header for McLeod, but we tightened up after that and didn't let them get another chance at equalizing.

      Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Colchester United
      GRI - Vernon 32' (PEN)
      MOTM: Vernon

We put a whopping 7 shots on target, but it took a penalty for us to finally put one past the keeper. This was a very controlling performance on our end, but our finishing has to get better. Luckily Vernon was able to draw the foul on a counter and converted from the spot. If we take a few of those chances better, this scoreline would have really told a different story.

      Exeter City 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
      EXE - Reid 54'
      GRI - Chambers 36', Woodman 40' (OG)
      MOTM: Boyce

This one was a solid performance all around. Chambers used his pace to get us on the board first, and then Vernon harassed the defense forcing them to turn the ball into their own net to double the lead. We had another defensive lapse that allowed them to convert an easy tap in, but other than that their chances were few and far between. Overall I would say this was a good way to end the month.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Hey guys, I'm just coming off the end of my first career. It was a very exciting run with Hellas Verona in Serie B. I ended up signing several young Italian players throughout my three seasons. Including the likes of Donnarumma, Cataldi, Locatelli, Politano and Totti's regen. Walked the second division in my first season, then signed a group of starlets and built a team around my regista Viviani. Finished 11th in my first season, then fifth in my third. Decided to end it there and instead start a new save.

Except I'm having trouble finding a team that fits what I want. Definitely looking at a top-flight side, maybe Championship but that's as low as I want to go. A decent budget and at least one good player I can use to build around or sell for big(ish) bucks. I'm not going to restart once I begin, irrespective of what happens in terms of contracts/results/transfers/injuries/etc. because I want the real managerial experience. I also want to limit my first team signings to about 3-5 max per season, with no January activity unless I'm signing a pre-contract or there's an injury crisis. But I can't find a team that I'm happy with.

So far I've looked at Leeds, Brighton, Sunderland, Marseille, Bremen, Malaga and Espanyol. Of those I think Brighton, Marseille and Malaga have appealed the most to me. I'm open to suggestions if you guys have thoughts. I don't even mind a club with a bang average squad and poor budget, but a future or current star who can go for 25+ million. Let me know your thoughts.

Torino? Sassuolo is too obvious, maybe even too good for what you're looking for. Udinese would be another suggestion, unless you're avoiding Serie A for some reason

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

We Try. We Fail. We Win.

                September 2017

                Hertha BSC 1 - 0 Eintracht Frankfurt
                Ibisevic 74' pen

                Hertha BSC 1 - 0 FC Köbenhavn
                Kalou 38' pen

Even though the result doesn't show it, we performed well in our first Europa League group stage game. We controlled the game but weren't able to finish our chances. Luckily Salomon Kalou managed to put his penalty away in the 38th minute to secure us the win.

                Werder Bremen 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Diagne s/o 57'
                Kalou 57' pen

                Hertha BSC 0 - 0 FC Schalke 04

This was quite a dull game, as the result shows. Neither team created many chances and the battle was mainly fought in midfield. A point is a point, though.

                Hannover 96 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Kalou 58'

                Malmö IF 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Stocker 11'

We continued to grind wins in our second Europa League match. Valentin Stocker scored the winning goal in the 11th minute when Malmö's keeper got tackled by his own teammate, leaving Stocker with an easy job to head the ball into the empty net.

                October 2017

                Hertha BSC 1 - 1 Bayer Leverkusen
                Ibisevic 44' pen
                Bellarabi 62'

This was an exciting game for every Bundesliga fan as league leaders Leverkusen faced second-placed Hertha away from home. Even though a draw is a very good result for every other Bundesliga team, I'm not happy about it. We outshot Leverkusen 8-1, and Bellarabi scored their equaliser with a first-time shot from outside the box. We really should've gotten the three points.

                1. FC Köln 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

                Hertha BSC 0 - 0 Besiktas JK

Both teams had won both of their previous games and the winner of this match would've gotten an advantage over the other. However, we didn't play well at all and we must consider ourselves lucky for drawing this game. Besiktas took 8 shots in this match, but fortunately none of them found their way to the back of the net.

                Hertha BSC 4 - 0 Hamburger SV
                Ibisevic 7', 33', 90', Christiansen 87'

This was the first league game in which we scored more than 1 goal. I have to say, it felt incredible to score at least two goals in a single game. Vedad Ibisevic was in top form and scored a hattrick to win us the game.

                Round of 32
RB Leipzig 1 - 2 Hertha BSC (aet)
                Forsberg 36'
                Weiser 57', Seferovic 99'

Our first DFB Pokal game of the season didn't start well as Red Bull Plastzig took the lead in the 36th minute after Emil Forsberg scored from a poor clearance effort. We showed great character to get back into the game, though, as Mitchell Weiser equalised the game from a counter attack in the 57th minute. The game then went into extra time and our summer signing Haris Seferovic scored his first goal for us to win us the game in the 99th minute. Next up: Köln.

                Borussia Mönchengladbach 1 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Raffael 75'
                Darida 61'

A draw against Gladbach away from home is a very good result, so I'm not too upset about losing our lead. Vladimir Darida put us into the lead right after the hour mark with a great shot from outside the box. Gladbach's ex-Hertha attacker Raffael equalised 15 minutes later from a low cross, though, to stop us from winning the game.

                November 2017

                FC Köbenhavn 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Weiser 40'

Köbenhavn didn't manage to get a single shot off in this match.

                Hertha BSC 0 - 0 Borussia Dortmund

We were the dominant side in this game, but just like in every other game this season, we failed to put our chances away. We outshot Dortmund with 7 shots to 1, but none of them went in.

                FC Augsburg 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

                Besiktas JK 2 - 2 Hertha BSC
                Hutchinson 45', 80'
                Seferovic 72', 90'

This is exactly why we signed Haris Seferovic! Besiktas took the lead twice with goals by Atiba Hutchinson, but the Swiss Seferovic was in the right place at the right time twice to equalise the game both times. With this draw we secured our place in the next round of the Europa League.

                Hertha BSC 3 - 0 Mainz 05
                Stark 12', Darida 21', Ibisevic 90'

A very good performance from the team to score three goals against a solid Mainz side. First our defensive midfielder Niklas Stark had gotten up to curl the ball around Mainz's keeper, and just nine minutes later Vladimir Darida shot the ball into the back of the net with a similar finish. The most interesting goal was the last one: Mainz's goalkeeper had gotten up for a corner which was cleared for our throw-in. The keeper was sprinting back towards his own goal, but when the ball went out, he just stopped and stood at the halfway line. Vedad Ibisevic then just shot the ball into the empty net from 40 yards out while the keeper was staring at the ball from the halfway line.

                December 2017

                Bayern München 1 - 1 Hertha BSC
                Vidal 6'
                Skjelbred 79'

I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but we deserved to win this match. Bayern had 5 shots compared to our 13, and we hit the post twice. A draw against Bayern is а very good result, though, so I'm quite pleased after all.

                Hertha BSC 2 - 0 Malmö IF
                Kalou 9', Darida 32'

We finished second in the group, behind Besiktas only on goal difference. Next up: another Turkish side in the form of Fenerbahce.

                Hertha BSC 2 - 0 TSG Hoffenheim
                Ibisevic 38', 58' pen

                Round of 16
                1. FC Köln 2 - 1 Hertha BSC (aet)
                Modeste 30', Rincon 113'
                Kalou 11' pen

Last season we got eliminated in the round of 32, this season we got eliminated in the round of 16. Both times I was equally disappointed, though. Köln is a beatable side but they were simply more clinical than us. Sebastian Rincon won them the game with a header in extra time. Shame.

                VfB Stuttgart 0 - 3 Hertha BSC
                Ibisevic 31', 82', Stocker 90'

Vladimir Darida sprained his knee and will be out for 4 weeks.

                Hertha BSC 1 - 1 RB Leipzig
                Seferovic 65'
                Selke 61'

It took Haris Seferovic until the last game of the year 2017, but he has finally scored for us in a league game. In the typical fashion of the Swiss striker, the goal was a vital one.

                My Thoughts

                League Form -
We have been in very good form which can be seen in the league table. Our only problem has been scoring goals as we have scored more than a single goal in just a handful of games. We need to sort this issue out fast if we want to continue challenging for a Champions League spot.

Defence - We have conceded only four (!) goals in the league this season. This is unbelievably good, and our defence is the only reason why we are this high in the standings.

Cups - Getting eliminated in the round of 16 of the DFB Pokal was disappointing, but it's behind us now and we need to focus on the league and the Europa League. Speaking of the latter, we did a very good job in the Europa League and ended up having an even amount of points with group toppers Besiktas. Our next opponent is Fenerbahce, and I believe that we can beat the Turkish side.

Players - Apart from our defenders and keeper Rune Jarstein, who has kept 12 clean sheets in 16 league games, skipper Vedad Ibisevic has been in very good form this season. The 33-year-old has netted 10 goals in the league and is just one behind the current top scorer. Furthermore, his overall has went up by one thanks to weekly training drills. Honorable mentions go to Mitchell Weiser and Vladimir Darida, who perform always well.

Transfer Window - The squad is pretty much perfect. I have no interest in selling or signing any players.

                Youth Academy

Sorry this update took so long to post, but school has been keeping me busy with essays and what-not. I'll try to leave you some feedback in the next few days.

                  THOUGHTS

League Play: Obviously an extremely successful month grabbing all 18 possible points, but we didn't make it very easy on ourselves. Far too many goals given up, and most of them with a one goal lead. That said, no league goals were given up at St. James in the month. It's still early in the season, but the home ground is becoming a bit of a fortress.

Elimination from EFL Cup: Despite being on the wrong end of the result, the match with Charlton was absolutely legendary. It took two late second half goals to force OT, only to have Charlton even it up in the second OT period. PKs went nine shots deep, with Charlton's GK actually converting the winning kick. Though not a priority of the board, it was definitely disappointing to go out to Charlton of all clubs.

Spreading The Wealth: The story of the early season thus far has been getting contributions from all over the squad. Diame, Shelvey, and Colback have been brilliant in the midfield, and Mitrovic, Gayle, and Perez have been rotating (and scoring) up top. I'm sure that one or two players will emerge over time, but for the time being it's been seamless to rotate players in and out.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Hey guys, I spent most of my Sunday toying around with formations on kick-off and got nice results with a few different systems. So this post is just a tactical round-up.

                      4-4-2

The straight-up solution to many woes. You can usually get a decent 4-4-2 line-up out of most squads. It's functional football at its finest, but not always the most conducive to fluid or attractive play. I used Juventus for this one with the following lineup: Buffon; Alves, Barzagli, Chiellini, Alex Sandro; Cuadrado, Marchisio, Pjanic, Asamoah; Higuain, Dybala. Probably a much more versatile and dynamic 4-4-2 than most, but got the job done. Two games against Schalke and Athletic Club, both 4-0 blowouts. Lesser teams will be similarly rigid without the attacking verve.

                      4-2-3-1

This formation takes the 4-4-2 and drops one striker into midfield, in the hole behind the lone forward. The result is greater control in the middle third and easier retention of possession. And if the wide midfielders push up in attack, you have a front four capable of scoring from multiple angles and positions. But the biggest advantage is the presence of multiple triangles, which makes the 4-2-3-1 very versatile for different play styles. For this formation, I used Leeds with the following formation: Green; Berardi, Jansson, Bartley, Taylor; Bridcutt, O'Kane; Sacko, Mowatt, Roofe; Wood. Played out a 2-1 win over Brighton and lost 1-0 to Dortmund, with neither goal in both games conceded from open play.

                      4-3-3

Possibly the most reliable formation given the three in central midfield, the 4-3-3 is one of my favourite systems. It's easy to retain possession or play on the break. And with a pacey front three, you can unleash some devastating performances and score plenty of goals. I played with Atletico Madrid in this line-up: Oblak; Juanfran, Godin, Savic, Filipe Luis; Gabi, Koke, Tiago; Griezmann, Gameiro, Carrasco. Played a two-legged fixture against Real Madrid. Won 3-1 at home with a Griezmann hat-trick, followed by a 1-1 draw with Godin scoring from a corner.

                      4-1-2-1-2

When I use the midfield diamond, it's always with the carriers playing in the centre rather than out wide, even if they are naturally wide players. This just makes it easier to retain possession, and I can always modify their runs by setting their movement to 'free' in the instructions. I think this is my first choice among all conventional formations simply because it combines solidity with amazing movement. I played two games as West Ham with the following setup: Adrian; Byram, Reid, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Kouyate, Noble, Payet, Feghouli; Antonio, Tore. I ripped Milan to shreds 3-0 but got crushed by Barcelona 4-1. You need some truly amazing wing backs to get the most out of this against a 4-3-3.

                      2-6-2 & 2-5-3

These are my personal innovations, both highly unconventional formations that use a back two. These highly athletic defenders are supported by a physical, deep-lying midfielder and a pair of hard-working wide midfielders. The only difference is whether the front three play centrally or as a three-man attack across the pitch. With the right trio, you can adapt to the opposition on a match-by-match basis by switching between the two. I went with Chelsea for this one in the following line-up: Courtois; Azpilicueta, Zouma; David Luiz; Moses, Kante, Matic, Alonso; Pedro, Costa, Hazard. In the central attack variant, Hazard played in the hole, with Pedro and Costa up front. In three games against Bayern, Juventus and Tottenham, I scored 11 goals and conceded 2. It looks weird on paper... but it works. And I may end up using these as my blueprint.

I've shortlisted a few clubs where I'd like to work my magic. To be honest, Serie A is my last resort simply because I've been there already. But go ahead and have a vote. And let's see where this goes.

The 4-2-3-1 is the formation I tend to use, but I have one major issue with it: my CDMs barely defend. No matter who I play there and no matter what their workrates are, the two defensive midfielders will not drop deep enough to defend properly. I often find one of my CDMs "defending" closer to the halfway line, higher up than my CAM. I seriously need help with this issue. Does anyone know how this could be fixed?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that changing the CDMs player instructions don't make any differences at all.

this is odd, I don't have this problem, my CDMs are routinely where they're supposed to and yes I do instruct them to not go forward too much. Pogba is an exception but that's in the diamond. When I do play with the 4231 I haven't really noticed this, is this on '17?

You already know I think an Italian club fits what you want but since you would prefer to be elsewhere and I prefer you play a CM somewhere you'll enjoy it most I voted Malaga.

IMHO the ideal formation is a 4-3-3 ... if you have the roster for it. Sure it's easy to plug in 3 midfielders but to really use it effectively you have to get 3 really good ones. What I'm saying is the 4-3-3 requires highly skilled players to maximize the setup. That's why in my CM's (where I start with lowly-rated rosters) I try to run with the 4231 and the diamond because as you pointed it allows you to triangulate in the passing game with ease. You also should have a stud ST/CF in a 4-3-3 and even a 4-2-3-1 whereas you can get away with lesser rated strikers/forwards in a two-striker system.

Andersen 73' (sprained knee, out 4 weeks)

Hidde Jurjus secured a Lenny Nangis cross from the right wing in his small box but Ted van de Pavert ran into him, sending the De Graafschap goalkeeper backwards and into his own net for what would be the game's deciding (own) goal. De Graafschap had put together a very good first half but Lars Veldwijk's goal to end that half really gave us some momentum and we started out the second half strong on the attack. That's a tough way to lose for anyone but I'm more concerned about Andersen's injury with games against Man U, Ajax, and Atlético coming up.

                                Passlack 71' (Nangis)

Felix Passlack hadn't even been on the pitch for a whole minute when he took a pass from Nangis to score the go-ahead and game-winning goal for us to give us a BIG road victory at Old Trafford to kick off the group stage. We played a really solid game on both sides of the pitch, including Peet Bijen filling in for Andersen.

                                Rusnák 87'

WOAH! I was confident heading into this game but even I wasn't expecting this kind of dominance from us. After clearly being the better team in the first half, we were finally able to break through on the scoring sheet early in the second half when Torgeir Børven's shot on target deflected off Mitchell Dijks leaving Jasper Cillessen with no chance to stop it. From there we were able to break through a couple more times on solid counter attacks and may even have gotten a clean sheet if not for gorgeous free kick execution by Albert Rusnák. BIG win for us.

Sneijder 38' (bruised leg, out 8 days)

One of our biggest flaws last season was losing or drawing games we should had won. It's still early but this performance was definitely a very good sign. Another very good sign is that Veldwijk continues to be in great form. It does suck not to have Sneijder as we fly to Spain to face Atlético but I was just glad that his injury turned out to not be serious.

Champions League - Group Match 2
Atlético Madrid - FC Twente (1-1)
                                Oblak 49' (OG)
                                Koke 52'
Nangis 38' (bruised shoulder, out 5 days)

Derlis González made up for a poorly-executed corner kick early in the second half by hustling into the box and stealing the ball from a defender, then firing a close range shot that Jan Oblak initially saved with his face but bounced off the back of his hands (which were in front of him) to go into the net and give us the partial lead in a game where our scoring chances were minimal. We had done a good job of keeping Atlético out of the back of our net up until that point but just three minutes later Koke finished up a nice passing display by Simeone's team to equalize for what would be the final score. The way the game played out we easily could have lost so this was a very valuable point to go with our win at Man U earlier this month.

Review: That was a compass-month --> supposed to show where we really are, and I really like what it showed. Three games, three wins in league play was just what we need to jump up to the top of the table in the Eredivisie while we came out of two tough road games in the UEL with 4 points to currently lead our group. With all due respect to Man U, the highlight of the month has to go to our win vs Ajax. After losing both times against them last season (both times with a 1-2 score) we really looked like the better team in this game. It was also nice to see Sneijder score and assist against the club with which he started his career.

                                The Academy
(listed by their ranking in it)

LW - Roy Verrips (56 OVR, 82-88): Now a 17-year old attacking winger from the Netherlands flashing pace (76acc/75spd). He checks in at 5'11" and 158lbs and is now the top prospect in the academy. However, he could benefit from a stay in the academy until next summer.

CM - Miguel Varela (47 OVR, 81-87): 17-year old from Venezuela described as defensive minded whose final evaluation by our youth scouts now places him near the top of our academy rankings. None of his skills jump out at you right now because he's still very raw despite his age. However, in our scouts' opinions his promise is undeniable, including his 6'2", 169lbs frame. Despite requesting and not receiving a promotion a month ago, he remains in the academy which is something we're happy about.

LB - Odisseas Ludwig (60 OVR, 80-86): Now a 16-year old from Germany described as physically strong who possesses great potential according to the final assessment from our youth scouts. The jumping (79), strength (79), aggression (75), and pace (75spd/74acc) are noticeable and well advanced for his age so our youth scouts are working on developing his defensive game.

RM - Mohamed Mühren (59 OVR, 80-86): 16-year old from the Netherlands showing great potential. He has very good pace (74spd/73acc), agility (73) and balance (73), a combination our coaches will try to continue to develop as well as other aspects of his game in hopes of finding a true diamond in the rough.

RW - Mauro Pröpper (57 OVR, 80-86): Now a 16-year old from the Netherlands who is displaying very good agility (76) at a very young age to go with promising pace (73acc/67spd). Already labeled by our scouts as someone showing great potential.

RW - Rick El Makrini (55 OVR, 80-86): Now a 16-year old from the Netherlands with notable pace (74spd/72acc) who shows a lot of promise early on.

CB - Agustin Benitez (54 OVR, 80-86): 15-year old from Venezuela showing a lot of promise. Described as physically strong, Benitez displays excellent aggression (77) and jumping (72) for his age.

CM - Vasco Granero (53 OVR, 79-89): 17-year old from Venezuela described as a playmaker who is starting to show more potential than initially thought. He possess good agility (77) although he needs to work hard in the academy to become useful for the senior roster.

GK - Olivier Ofori (55 OVR, 79-85): 16-year old from Belgium who is officially our top goalkeeper prospect. If he can spend a full season in the academy he could become our third GK as soon as next season.

CB - Rico Kehrer (61 OVR, 78-84): The 16-year old from Germany is part of a pipeline of centre backs from that country in our academy/roster. He currently stands at 5'5" and 152lbs and is considered physically strong. He's an aggressive (88) defender.

RM - Jens Schuermans (60 OVR, 76-82): 16-year old from Belgium described as a playmaker. He's only 4'11" and 123lbs at the moment but he's crazy agile (76) for someone his age. He flashes some nice potential.

CF - Gustavo Jimenez (44 OVR, 75-83): 17-year old from Venezuela signed to the squad in big part due to the position that he plays. He becomes the first striker/centre-forward to join the academy so he has that going for him, to go along with noticeable size (6'4", 176lbs), strength (77), speed (75), and jumping (74). He has the tools to be come a useful scorer for us in the future.

GK - Nill Oulare (58 OVR, 74-80): 16-year old from Belgium currently standing at 5'9" and 157lbs. He has been developing well in his time in the academy although he projects as more of backup GK since scouts have concluded he doesn't have starting potential.

CDM - Daniel Yabo (64 OVR, 73-79): The 16-year old from Germany described as defensive minded is the most likely choice for our next promotion to the senior squad. His defensive skills are pretty advanced for someone his age and his stamina is already good enough to at least play in a backup role.

                                2022 WC - CONMEBOL Qualifying

                                WC Qualifying - Match 7
                                Ecuador - Venezuela (3-2)
                                Cazares 28'
                                Plata 42'
                                Plata 57'
                                Juanpi 60' (Rincon)
                                Rondon 62'

Ecuador scored on three absolutely perfect shots to hand us a hurtful loss. I was beside myself as every one of their goals was on difficult angles with shots that grazed a goal post before going on. One of those you can laugh off, two of those you're in disbelief, three of them you just want to think there's a GPS microchip in the ball. To our credit we bounced back from the 0-3 deficit to make it a one goal game with plenty of time left but we were unable to complete the comeback.

                                WC Qualifying - Match 8
                                Venezuela - Colombia (1-1)
                                Bacca 42'
                                Peñaranda 81' (Juanpi)

As I said in the previous update, these rivalry games are always difficult and luckily for us Peñaranda came off the bench to help us salvage a point thanks to a nice setup from Juanpi who once again looked better with the Venezuelan NT than he does with FC Twente. The ref also missed a clear handball by Bacca that helped him control the ball and score at the end of the first half.

                                10/17: at FC Groningen
10/20: vs FC Basel (Champions League)
                                10/25: vs FC Utrecht

We set the bar high in September and the challenge this upcoming month will be to meet that standard. I don't think it's unreasonable to believe we can win all four games at FC Twente, while the WC Qualifying games look to be more of a challenge against the two teams directly behind us in the standings.

                                Stay tuned!
