I am also trying to achieve something similar with 3-5-2 formation. By default, side midfielders dont behave like wing backs should - don't drop to make back 5 when defending. Even in attack I'm not completely sattisfied with them, as side mids tend to tuck in too much without providing width.

So far I came up with two options:

    1. 3-5-2 in possession and 5-3-2 out of possession. Something like you did here.

    2. 5-3-2 both in and out possession, but giving them Attacking Fullbacks advanced tactic. Then both FB's would advance high up the pitch when in possession, essentially acting as wingbacks.

All in all, neither is ideal.
I'd go with the first option. Perhaps I'll tackle Watford next. I know I'm just...crazy, but I really want to try and set custom tactics for each team.

Even if it's just doing certain tactics for top teams in certain leagues and then using a series of generic tactics that play realistically, I think it truly improves the game.

I might throw a spreadsheet together, as I've also completed a tactic for Leicester City.

I'll throw whatever I have in the OP at some point.

This is totally awesome! As someone who is new to soccer, but now passionately watches, it is great to have guys like you on here to help people like me learn more in depth about the game.

Okay, I've officially dove into the deep end—spreadsheet has been created! I had withdrawals after not being able to do this with FIFA the past several years.

I might make a new thread to specifically focus on custom AI tactics, so others can share, etc. We'll see! For now I'm also adding this to the OP.

        Tactics Spreadsheet
        PES 2017 AI/CPU Tactics

The above spreadsheet contains tactics for teams which are meant for humans to play against. They each have a fluid formation image for in possession and out of possession, as well as listing out all other tactic settings.

They are not perfect, and may not be precise for each team. The goal will be to have certain teams set with specific tactics while other teams will get a generic tactic that is used for multiple teams.

The overall goal is to have teams play in a realistic manner, which includes utilizing fluid formations to set proper player roles.

Please feel free to submit tactics, with images of formations included so they can be included on the spreadsheet!

Wow, this is a thread that I will be keeping an eye on. Great stuff.
Game is close to brilliant this year but I'm just getting used to all the tactical options in PES myself.

Do you guys think that support range influences the type of runs made by AI teammates or is it something more or less coded in the game? It's one of the few things that bother me because often times as I get past the halfway line with a mid, other midfielders don't make obvious little runs into close-by space to aid with build-up, but my striker usually starts one immediately down the middle or wing. I usually refuse to make that play (complaint #2: these through/long balls are way too accurate for the distance), but still I hope this can be fixed with some option. Haven't tried setting support runs to 1, like I saw in the spreadsheet for man city and arsenal.

            Darn it Kreb.

Now I HAVE to restart my ML. And it has nothing to do with that 3-0 or 4-1 derby loss to Liverpool I had today.

Who knows how long it'll be until I now start a ML, but I can't help it. Different tactics/formations really make teams play differently, so why not?!

Now this gives me something to do while I wait for more polished option files to be released.

Or do you allow the computer to adjust to your formations and tactics? It seems this years version of PES is very very tactically sound and you must be tactically astute to out smart your opponent.
I always have a base formation that I'll use more often than not (say ~75%) and then vary the formation based on:

                    1. Form Arrows - If there are guys on the bench with Up arrows and I have players in the starting XI on Down arrows I'll try to get as many Up arrows in the lineup as possible

                    2. Match Significance - I tend to experiment more in Domestic Cup matches (more youth, different formations, etc...).

                    3. Opponent - I'm not going into the Nou Camp trying to outplay Barca if I'm a much weaker side. I'll adjust my formation and tactics to give myself the bet chance at a good result.

I've been playing around with this formation too as I've settled on Lyon as my ML club. Going forward I'd ideally like to have a CAM sit behind the 2 STs as I use Wing Rotation so 1 ST gets wide, the other ST makes a run into the box and the CAM stays in/around the box to provide another option.

The downside is what to do with the CAM on defense and how to transition into defense. If your fluid formation requires one player to travel a far distance (in relative footy terms) it will open up space and traditionally the 3-5-2 is prone to allowing space on the wings unless your wingbacks are workhorses.

                    At Kickoff

                    In Possession

                    The transition to Defense:

Wide Midfielders drop back into wingbacks. CAM drops straight back while 2 CMs drop back and slightly wide. ST2 drops into vacated CAMs spot and ST1 becomes counter target.

                    Settling into this:

They challenge will be to pick the players that best carry out these instructions. I don't want my best CF Lacazette going wide as I want to keep him in/around the box so maybe put him at ST2 and Valabuena/Fekir as ST1 with Grenier as CAM/CM.

We'll see how this goes. Virtual Manager problems

Do you guys think changing tactics for teams, including 5 second change, will make a difference in BAL mode?

I'm now under the impression that any changes I make to tactics will have no impact on existing BAL / ML saves.

There have been conflicting reports but I assume I have to start over.

I believe the only changes that incorporate into existing saves are cosmetic saves such as kits and things of that nature.

But I have a big question—if you have two controllers, can you set your opponents gameplan in ML?

I always play 10 minute games. After reading some posts here I decided to give longer games a try to see if that actually does change anything, and the differences are actually pretty substantial in a "I'm never going to do that again" way. Ha!!

It was probably the most frustrating experience I've ever had playing this series. The game clearly wants outcomes to have realistic stat lines, so it does everything in its' power to ensure that you don't just blow up the CPU. It felt cheap and artificial.

After only a few minutes I felt like I had lost all control over what I was doing and the game was playing itself for me. Forced passing mistakes, delayed animations, the already OP CPU D was even more infuriating. Possession build up that I can regularly achieve in 10 minute games devolved into fast break city because the CPU just wouldn't let me do anything other than one touch pass, or bomb it over the top to get into their half.

It just seemed like all the little tricks the game pulls to keep things reasonable were amplified to the point that I was able to notice them. At one point I got so frustrated at another crazy unrealistic turnover that I literally put the controller down while the CPU attacked and just waited for them to inevitably cough the ball back to me. UGH.

Think I'm gunna stick with 10 minutes. LOL
