Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

Picked up 2018 on the Black Friday sale. PES' gameplay is incredible as always, but I gotta say, it's very frustrating being limited to a 20-team MLS. Is there any way to circumvent this, short of moving the entire league to the Championship and adding two phantom teams (I guess LAFC would work for the 23rd team and a USL/NASL team for the 24th)?

Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

Not trying to beat a dead horse here but the derby difficulty is absolutely destroying an incredible game. I’m absolutely blown away that this is acceptable. Normal games are perfect. I win some I lose some. Tactics work and there are so many magical moments that keep me coming back. Then I get to this garbage. I can deal with the cpu having unreal tackling prowess. I can deal with the cpu having infinite stamina so they can press relentlessly all game with full turbo. I can deal with the pinpoint full pitch passes up the middle and the ping pong accurate passing. It’s crap but I can deal with it. What I can’t deal with is the complete and utter blatant nerfing of my players. No one can tackle. The CPU does this devastating and unbelievable move that cause my players to be completely baffled on defence. This move often causes my players to run 5 yards past their marks. It’s so unbelievable I’ve seen it torch 3 players all doing their best to play defence. That move, are you ready for this.......they change direction, BOOM! That’s it. They change direction. They change direction and my defenders look like Bambi with brand new baby deer legs. No one has any awareness. No one has any sense of urgency. The ball just sits there and no one seems to care. It rolls right by guys. You can play all out defence with back line defending and world class defenders just stand there looking at their mark blow right by them. You can watch those moments in replay and see the defender mouth the words”that’s the fastest kid alive”. Even worse defenders will take a few steps the wrong way on purpose for no other reason than Konami’s desire for me to have a coronary. Every goal is BS and completely out of my hands. 30 some years of gaming and I’ve never been so cheated or infuriated.
I’m not the greatest at the game but if I have all the games playing out perfectly so I win some and lose some why in God’s green earth would anyone think it’s a good idea to add in games that are beyond winnable.
Here’s the halftime stats of the last derby. Guess which team is the CPU.

Superstar is bad. But the rivalry matches are another level of BS.

Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

I’ve made it 3/4 through my first season of master league playing on top player. One of my favourite games in recent memory for sure. I’ve kinda ranted about the difficulty and I’ve come to understand and appreciate it in a weird psychotic way. Lol

Through my internet research lol Ive found alot of people call it scripting and people generally have different view points of what scripting means and if it exists. Whatever it is, it exists in PES 18. I don’t know if I’d call it scripting and I’ve seen a ton of other threads that debate the concept in many sports games that get pretty heated. For the sake of describing what I understand ill call it “cheap AI with a purpose”. The cpu at times get super human at tackling, passing, shooting accuracy, unlimited turbo regardless of the teams skill level you are playing. The game will also nerf your ability to do the same and doing any fundamental actions becomes a chore. Awareness is out the window and you can literally watch your players purposely take a step the wrong way allowing their mark to get free to the net either dribbling or for an uncontested thru pass. The most obvious situations this happens is during derby matches or cup contests. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Here’s where I talk about the “with a purpose” part. Through hours of playing and hours of reading on the internet the biggest factor is team spirit. If you can keep your team spirit up it will go a long way in curbing the nonsense. Basically Konami has done this to add a dynamic of morale and continuity that adds a layer of depth to master league. A lot of sports games have a morale system but they have all been pretty shallow and generally other than a cool concept, it’s not something I’ve worried about controlling as a gamer. In PES it’s essential you manage it. Instead of just trying to get the best players you need to get the best players for your team. It’s a tough concept to implement because purposely cheating the user is risky but if you understand why it’s happening, it really pays off. Managing your team really matters. Subs really matter. Who you make captain really matters. To go from getting a complete beat down in a rivalry match to actually winning one with a well managed team is extremely rewarding. Winning my first derby match was as exhilarating an experience as any I can remember in a sports game.

With that being said the cheap AI does rear its head in another situation that I’m less thrilled about. For some reason Konami decided that if things are going too well you really need to lose. Even with team spirit at 92 every once in a while, if I haven’t lost in a while, the shenanigans begin. I get it I guess. They want you to have a challenge but it usually happens to me against a far inferior team and it’s super blatant and obvious. Within 30 seconds of the match starting everything is just off and I know it’s going to be a long day. If I somehow manage to win or draw it’s going to keep happening so I’ve learned it’s just best to lose and the game will be back to normal next match. Like I said I think I understand what Konami was thinking but it’s just not a good plan to force unfair gameplay that can’t be combated like team spirit for no other reason than because you haven’t lost in a while. I went on a run that I hadn’t lost in 6 games. Out of the 6 I only actually won 1 but I tied 5 and the next game was ridiculous. I rage quit I dunno how many times and each time I replayed it was the same. I managed to get thru the game in a tie. Next game the same. Rinse repeat. Tied. Next game the same till I was ready to be done with PES. Ended up taking a 5-0 loss to Huddersfield. After the loss everything went back to normal.f” For a while at least. I’m in 5th in the premier league having gone on a 5 game no loss streak and the cheese is back. If it was against anyone in the top half of the table I could probably swallow it easier but it’s the worst team with no one higher than 75 overall. It just feels unnecessary.

I’m sure most PES vets know about all this but I’m pretty new to the series and if any of this helps alleviate any one else’s frustration it was worth my time writing. This truly is an amazing game. When I score it feels like I created a goal. When I win I feel like I earned it. Most of the time when I lose its earned but not always and that’s a bit of a shame but overall I can deal with it.

Re: PES 2018 Full Game Impressions

I just started to dominate the Master League mode so much in top player difficulty, nearly all my complaints about the game are gone.

The team spirit is 94, it seems like the things that I complained about were gone when the team came together. Maybe it was a challenge of ML, not the game itself.

I'm in my season season with Valencia CF. And at the moment i am sitting at top of the La Liga with 16 wins and 4 draws - 0 losses in 20 games. 6 points clear of 2nd placed Atletico Madrid. It is only my second season so i didn't manage to get many players, but the team is playing incredible.

In the Champions League i dominated the group of Juventus Arsenal and Schalke, won all 6 games, conceeded 0 goals, finished with +9 average and 18 points.

            It sounds surreal, right?

I don't know how long it will last but I feel very comfortable especially on offensive side. I am pleased that the team is closing down and pressing as a group when I press to the opponents. In the past, i complained about it because only a few players were pressing and they weren't closing down the opponent correctly. Now they are more aggressive and it leads to better results.

As a Pes vet,I suggest you to use the turbo button much less than before, it will yield to better results in getting past your opponents. Also turn with the ball whenever you get it and opponent is just behind you. They press a lot so with a simple turn you can lose them. Also I used shot fakes a lot in the past, in this game it's not working if it's not used 100 % in the correct situation.

By the way I deploy 3-1-2-3-1 formation with
Lafont as goalkeeper ( a very talented young goalkeeper bought from France)
Murillo - Garay - Rugani as defenders
Ascacibar as defensive midfielder ( very talented young Argentinian)
Kimmich or Andre Gomes as central midfielder
            Parejo as central midfielder
            Insigne as Left winger
Guedes or Coco as right winger
            Rodrigo as SS
            Mbappe as CF

Anyone getting severe FPS drops on Xbox One X? It usually happens when the ball is in the box near the goal. So in other words, at the worst possible time...

I managed to get a great deal on this game, so I bought it much sooner than I thought I would. So far, I'm enjoying the gameplay on the pitch far more than I did in PES 2017, especially in Play Now, but what's the deal with the ML BS? I can win exhibition games on Top Player, but I can't win a single game in ML! When I play ML, my players all feel like they're stuck in mud and the AI keeper saves everything, while on my defensive end, the CPU keeps scoring from BS shots and headers. It's driving me mad. I might swallow my pride and turn the difficulty down to Professional in my ML.

It’s all about your team spirit. The number in the shield on the top right of gameplan screen. If it’s under 80 your going to have some pretty slanted gameplay. 80-90 you will have mostly fair gameplay other than derby’s or certain cup games. Over 90 it’s mostly fair.

Biggest key to team spirit in my experience is finding the right captain.

I didn't know team spirit actually mattered. That must be why it feels literally impossible to win a game or even score in my ML. My team spirit is in the low 40s and I missed the chance to sign a captain in the first transfer window, so I should just start over. I'm not a glutton for punishment.

Ya if it’s in the 40s you are in for a world of hurt lol.

First thing to do is find any of your players that have the leadership trait and give them the captain tag. Just keep trying guys till you get the highest number in that team spirit shield in the top right corner. Once you get the highest number leave that player as your captain.

Then If you go in to gameplan and player substitutions and swap out players, that number will rise and fall. I usually just try and substitute guys until that numbers the highest and roll with that squad against good teams. I will then take a lower number against scrubs to get some other guys playing time. I never let it get below 80 though.

Yeah once you get that Team Spirit up you really feel the difference.

Formations also play a part. If you switch formations a lot it can mess with your player's ability to settle.

PES gets some things wrong but one thing it nails is the risk/reward for player & formation selection. It forces you to make some tough decisions.

I still haven't played 2018 yet, which makes me sad, but even on 2017 you need a few months worth of games to get the team to gel. Once the Team Spirit comes up they start to know when to make runs for you, the passes and timing become more crisp and overall the team plays better - totally agree. I also agree it's a good concept and implemented well.

After a while when team spirit is high you become almost unbeatable ?

In top player difficulty I won the League with Valencia with 0 losses and 10 draws and I also won the Champion's League with 0 losses.

Won against Barcelona 6-0 away, and 5-2 against Real Madrid.

My team is not full of superstars, good players but not at Real, Barca level.

Maybe team spirit affecting the outcomes too much ?
