I don't know if it's because I'm picking PES back up after about a half a year of being off and I need to get in the groove again, but I think that the game is a bit harder than last year. In PES 17 I played on Top Player for about half the season, and I ended up winning games against teams that were better than me like 4-0. Superstar ended up proving more of a challenge, but I wasn't able to play much of it. This year I am starting back on Top Player and it feels more like Superstar of last year. Pretty much all of my games so far have been tight. I think this is mainly due to the fact that the AI responds to the tactics you are using better this year. The AI also seems a lot more competent on defense this year, too. Played a couple games on Superstar as Juve against Milan and Man Utd. against Chelsea and barely got any scoring chances. I think it might be a bit before I unlock Legend difficulty.

A number of people are reporting that you need to move down in difficulty. So if you were superstar last year, you'll find Top Player about the same... But also gameplay can actually be better on Top Player or Professional over superstar and legendary difficulties.

Professional is way too easy but it's quite a big jump up to Top Player. I started a Konami League with Chelsea and bar a couple of top sides it's mainly made up of teams far worse than Chelsea 2-3 stars and most of the games are very tight. The only thing I find with Top Player is the AI becomes almost perfect at passing and becomes a bit ping pong

I haven't played PES in recent years as I'm coming from FIFA but with my experience against the CPU I would say the difficulty in this game is pretty good.
At super star I can beat but it's tough still for me as I wouldn't win the league offline on that level and I haven't even touched legend yet which I'm sure is really tough
top player is good level if I think if I were playing master league offline though overall so I could win the league.
good video above and even though I play online primarily I play like you describe in the video on defense and use those tactics. I always will play conservative D with deeper defensive line. I will back track my players more often than being aggressive.
