Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Gave up on my Everton save...it was getting ridiculous. My 0-0 draw with Burnley was the last straw. Started a new game with Charlton that is starting out alright.
EDIT: And the frustrations begin...went up 2-0 on Colchester only to lose 3-2. Still sitting in 7th though.
EDIT: Yeah, this game is a joke, or something is corrupt with my file or something. I've had 2 goals disallowed against Leeds, while they've gotten 2 penalties. I don't know what you guys do to be good, but something is up with this game.Last edited by BunnyHardaway; 08-22-2011, 08:11 PM.Comment

Trust me, just roll with the punches and it'll get better. You should also look into reading different FM specific forums and things like that. I've been playing for 2 years and I am still occasionally learning things.Last edited by Whitesox; 08-23-2011, 12:25 AM.Comment

I've decided to start as Barcelona with the transfer update DB. I thought I'd see if I could get Cesc some trophiesGoing to build with youth and development and avoid paying monster fees for players....

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
^ That kind of takes the fun out of it for me. When I come to a new team, it takes at least a couple hours of evaluating the team and setting up a base tactic to fit the strenghts and weaknesses of the team. If I have another tactic in mind that I want to move to, I'll start training them on it in the match preparation screen and then bring in players slowly that fit the new one more. It usually takes a full season or two to really get a team playing well how I want consistently.
That might be where you're going wrong, JJ. How much tweaking do you do before and during matches to your tactics. If you go up on a team, they're going to start throwing players forward. You have to dial back a bit and change your tactics. Try a more defensive approach and turn counter-attacking on to take advantage of how they are playing.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 08-23-2011, 01:30 PM.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Thanks for the tips...I've settled into a 4-4-2 diamond tactic that seems to be working okay. Here is how I have it set up:
I finally beat a team as good/better than me (beat 2nd place Millwall 1-0), but had some really crappy results too (lost to Brentford, drew Stockport and Swindon).Comment

Looks like I'll be heading to QPR after one season at the helm of Newport County.
QPR was relegated to League 1 this year and approached me for the job. Right back to the Championship is what I'm sure the expectations will be.Comment

In a shocking twist after what can only be described as a hail mary application, I have been appointed manager of Brazil! Should be a fun 2 or 3 games until I'm removed by the perpetual meat grinder that is the Brazilian FA.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Amazing...I was in 4th place with 11 matches to go and was only a point behind Millwall for 3rd. Barring collapse I was at least assured a promotion playoff spot. Since then:
Charlton 0-2 Millwall
Charlton 0-1 Gillingham
Charlton 2-3 Huddersfield
Charlton 3-2 MK Dons
Charlton 1-1 Carlisle
Charlton 0-2 Southampton
Charlton 1-1 Colchester
Charlton 1-2 Norwich
5 points in 8 games. Now I'm sitting 6th and only 2 points ahead of 7th...to add insult to injury, two of my final three games are against Leeds (1st) and Oldham (2nd). I want to break things. I didn't do anything to my tactics other than adjusting based on matchups either.Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
Based on the tactic you posted above, you are playing a rigid, negative tactic. Maybe not compeltely negative, but enough so that you should be getting some clean sheets.
Keeping this in mind while looking at those results, and I would suggest you invest in some defenders over the offseason. This season is probably too far gone, but occasionally if you have a private chat with your captain, you can have him hold a team meeting, and that might turn things around. Also check Backroom Advice about that, it can be found there as well.Last edited by Whitesox; 08-24-2011, 01:19 AM.Comment

I did manage to get into the playoff with some huge results:
Charlton 5-2 Exeter
Charlton 0-0 Leeds
Charlton 7-2 Oldham
The Oldham result was the game I switched and holy crap did it make a difference. That actually dropped them from 2nd to 3rd, giving Millwall the auto promotion. I'll post the full table once the playoffs are over.Comment

That explains why I just did so well when I switched from "Attacking" to "Counter".

Still, invest in defenders. How many clean sheets do you have this year?Comment

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***
I just hope I get promoted so I don't have to sell Shelvey or Roberto Coulatti. Shelvey has really come on at the end of the year and Coulatti is a beast that I picked up on a free. Him and my other starting striker have combined for like 50 goals.Last edited by BunnyHardaway; 08-24-2011, 01:50 AM.Comment
