As expected, my first job isn't going so well. Last in the league, lost out in two cup competitions in the first round. Was expected by the board and media to have a high finish, to fight for promotion out of the Scottish level 4. Only 7 games in, so I still have time to turn it around. But man, is playing with a low level team like this hard for a first time player.

Villa wanted 100M for Jack Grealish. Ok.

"Settled" for Florian Thauvin because I somewhat followed his career irl.

If you're first getting into this game, I would recommend playing with a bigger team.

Ya, when I get fired I'll probably start over with a bigger club so I can get the hang of the game more. I'm at the point now where its win every game or get fired according to the emails I am getting from the board. So its going to happen soon, lol.

But I've won my last two since changing my tactics to fit the current players better. Instead of trying to train them in what I want to play. Figured 9 games into the season and they haven't adapted yet, they probably never will before I get canned. So who knows, I might salvage it and make it through the year. But I'm not putting money on it.

Yeah Zo I'd start with a bigger team as well if it's your first go with this game. I remember I always started as Barca or Real to get my feet wet in my first go around. I know the low level saves are fun but being a big team can also be fun if you put some of your own rules. I almost never go for established stars anymore as a big club. I prefer developing the best prospects and buying kids I can develop.

Missing out on the playoffs by 3 points in Season 2 at Fylde has me questioning whether I can handle another season of this damn league.

Well, last season I had a 7 game shutout streak, and I topped it this year with a 10 game shutout streak!

The streak was snapped in a 2-1 loss to Brighton..... lol

It was a very nice run, though those 0-0 draws were frustrating. Particularly the home draw to Benfica in the UCL knockout round where we absolutely dominated. Now we have to go to Portugal and make sure we don't lose.

Sitting 4th in the league right now, with about 10 matches to play. Only 4 points out of 2nd, however, and games left against City (3rd) and Man U (2nd). Gonna be an interesting finish to the season.

Man I have been lucky in the Capital One draws. I avoided the prem teams and get Watford in the quarterfinals. Watford away won't be easy but they're not Arsenal or City

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

So after getting fired from Berwick, before starting a new save, I applied to some jobs just to see. And somehow ended up landing a better job than I deserved. Took over at FC Halifax Town in Vanarama National League. Not a big team by any means. But bigger than I was at. Kind of a crazy step up. But they are in a bit of finicial trouble, and I said I wouldn't need any money for a while. So I think this is the only reason I got it. And I am having much more success at this club. Way better quality group of players. So I might hold off on starting over.

6-1-1 with this club since taking over (dat new manager boost!). Moved up the table from 19th into 11th. Board wants top half finish, which we are now in with 12 games to go, so just need to hold on to this form. Also doing really well in the FA something cup. In the semis, but probably as far as we get. My first game was in this cup and I won 3-0 in the third round. Our loss was to the first place team in league on the road. A 5-0 smashing. And our draw was a 3-3 draw on the road to the 4th place team. We came from behind at half time down 2-0, and then 3-1 at the 70th minute. First game I leaped out of my chair, arms raised above my head, yelling at my monitor. The equalizing goal came in the 93'.

I decided to continue using the old system they were used to, instead of trying to get them to learn my system this late into the season. I just made some tactical changes to the 4-1-4-1 they had been using. Turned the wide mids into att-su from def-support. And set the full backs to be att-su instead of limited defenders. And changed the ST to be a target man with support. Which fit his abilities more. He was set to advanced striker att, but wasn't scoring goals. He now has 8 assists since changing his role and 3 goals. (the tactics weren't set when I took over, but the assistant was really pushing these roles, so I assume they were previous ones) And I didn't change any of the staff. For now anyways. Going to see them all out for this season. Was something I promised the board. Figured it would be an easy promise to keep.

Wish I would have bit the bullet and started playing this years ago, instead of blowing it off as a silly spreadsheet game.

You must be in the FA Carlsberg Trophy. A competition for non-league English teams.

At Fylde we made a decent run in that in Season 2. In the NLN you start in the final qualifying round. I think we made it to the 3rd or 4th Round.

In the FA Cup, we made the First Round proper, which was lucky - we had good draws in the 3 qualifying rounds we had to go through. Didn't get a big, profitable away match though. We played at Walsall and they only drew a couple thousand. Better than our gate receipts, but nothing that paid for the season's wages or allowed us to upgrade coaching.

The fact is you're enjoying the game now and that's all that matters My wife wonders how I enjoy these games, but for me, it's the planning, tactical management, and development that make this so much fun.

Reading about Suntan's adventures with Forest, RSN's anger at the Strasbourg board, Mo's QPR winning the Premier League, Kaletore's fun in Ireland, as well as Kobalt and gopher's posts are so much fun. ZO, your experience seems awesome as well.

I like FIFA, Madden, and the NHL games. They all had robust career modes and it was always disappointing when the modes either were stripped with system evolution or other modes ie. financially driven ones, took over. I think more and more sports gamers are starting to appreciate the full blown "spreadsheet" games because of the sheer depth and control you have.

Anyhow, my Middlesbrough side are dominating and they've had to, as QPR are unbeaten too and destroying teams like I am. I'll post a proper update when I get a chance

                                Strasbourg Year 3 Update:

As you can see from the table the fight for the third and final promotion spot is fierce. Being tied on points for third is a huge overachievement, as I was predicted to finish 18th. The Strasbourg board are unsurprisingly delighted, but not delighted enough to give me any money to spend (let's not get crazy here). Grenoble is somehow 1 point back, despite a -1 goal differential. They have been tremendously lucky.
