Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
That is where I disagree. Coq is dependable, he knows his role and plays within those boundaries, but he doesn't offer more than that. Personally I would rather see someone tall, strong, and all the typical characteristics you want in defensive midfielder. Someone who can play CB if there is an injury crises. Someone who can be an asset on set pieces, whether it is defending or attacking.
El Neny might not be that player but he is a better box to box, more athletic, and much better attacking player than Coq. He doesn't have to play the defensive role.Comment

Horrible, weak clearance by Per, and then we give up a ****ing wonder goal to go down 1-0. I have a feeling nine times out of ten he sends that into the stands or scuffs it, but he's playing Arsenal so he ****ing buries it.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
Few things I noticed specifically from yesterday other than us generally playing awful:
Giroud was nearly invisible from what I remember. In a match in which we're being pressed like that, it's going to be hard to get it to him so he can do what he does. Therefore, it seemed like he never had a chance to do much, as the ball could never get to him.
Which of course leads to how the hell do we do anything when being pressed like that? Ozil was nullified very well, and the issue was we had no other options. There was nobody else for them to be threatened by, so they could always focus and close down Ozil.
All I could think all match was how we really, really missed Alexis. Someone who can have the ball at his feet and make something happen on his own. Create a shot for himself, or draw enough attention that someone else can be free. Ozil creates for others, which is huge, but we also need someone to just have a go at the defense like Alexis does.
The only time I even remember this happening was when Iwobi came on. He had the ball at his feet to the left of goal, and attempted to run at the defender and make something happen, as opposed to waiting for someone else to do something which would allow him to do something. This is why I was actually hoping to see Jeff come on, as he's inexperienced, but hell he would've went right at a defender and make them make a choice, and try and create a bit more chaos around the box.
Lastly, Ramsey and Flamini just did not work at all in this game, and I think most of that was Flamini due to the pressing. There was several times where the ball came to his feet, he was pressed, so he sent the ball back to either Per or Koscielny, and then himself retreated back further go get the ball from them. We just kept losing ground and being pressed even further.
As I was typing this I just realized it would've been great to have Wilshere in this game, also. You're going to press him? Great, we'll he's going to run right at you, through your midfield and straight at your defense, forcing you to bring him down.
I could go on, but I'll stop rambling for now. We obviously played poorly, and you could see what we were struggling with, and it was definitely not knowing what to do when we couldn't get the ball from midfield to forwards, and what to do when they pressed high and made us lose ground over and over.Comment

Once again, not that we did play awful, but even the FA thinks that Jon Moss did a terrible job, as he's officiating a game in the Championship today instead of the Premier League.
He's also apparently missed three blatant penalty calls so far. Send him to League 1!Comment

What a difference 48 hours makes huh fellas? Again, what can we say about Mesut Ozil other than he's just the best no. 10! Good set plays and a well taken goal. None of the people who defended Ozil during his "rough" periods will be surprised. He's just a class class footballer and I've had a man crush on him since he was at Werder Bremen.
Gabriel played pretty damn good and I'd like to see more game time for him.Comment

I love that we can bring on Gabriel and not miss a beat in defense, and heck, even Chambers looked pretty decent at DM, so perhaps he does have a future there. Either way, if he could be a type of utility player and cover at CB, RB, and DM, that's pretty damn nice to have on the bench.
Ozil is just...wow.
Another matchup that we're very capable of grabbing three points from against Newcastle is next. Hopefully we've now fully put the Southampton bump in the road behind us. Glad we'll have a decent time to now rest up.Comment
