Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***

Current, and arguably future personnel warrants 5 at the back. Between Kola, Bellerin, and AMN filling in at right-back I think sending the wings forward is important. Todays miss wasn't necessarily because of the defense though, against a BATE squad that we knew were going to throw bodies behind the ball and do their best to stop everything in the box, it's insane to me that we didn't have our creative best out there. Ozil wasn't performing well the last time he played in the league, but had he been given the space to operate that BATE were allowing outside the box, I believe he could have created more than FOUR chances. Iwobi is a fine player, but he absolutely should've sat out this game, he's a big physical winger that this game didn't need at all. Had I been in charge of sending out the squad, I probably would line up

    Cech
    AMN/Mustafi/Kos/Monreal/Kola
    Guendouzi/Xhaka
    Ozil/Ramsey
    Laca

It gives us two creative players in the half spaces between Kola/AMN and Laca, allowing us to either control the ball on the wing and work it into the box, or sending in crosses to Laca. Xhaka gets to play more forward and set-up four attackers, two on the flanks, and two through the middle, this also pushes the defense a bit wider, so Xhaka could even set up one of his patented booms that either knocks out a spectator in Row T or rises to the top of the highlights on r/soccer. Guendouzi gets to control the midfield, something he's shown that he loves doing, and gives us an ultimate like-for-like replacement with Torreira coming in off the bench if Guendouzi's quality is lacking.

I think our player selection was wrong, I think the tactic was mostly correct though. As I've said this year isn't about winning silverware or going back to being "Arsenal" it's about the beginning of a process, and throughout, I've accepted the defeats where I thought we still did what we needed to do, and been happy with the overall progress in creating a definitive shape of play, today's team selection leaves me wondering a bit about after the process though, while I agree with playing people based on merit, it's an absolute fools errand to not change the team based on the opposition. Even in Football Manager I follow that.

Today was a disappointment, and a step back, we'll see if we can pick up the win in 7 days at the Emirates, if we don't, it'll be a catastrophic failure. Emery has his work cut out for him, and this will honestly be a sticking point for me in my support if he fails to adapt.

I normally don't care for such nonsense, but....

Would you rather fight one Kolasinac sized chicken? Or 100 chicken sized Kolasinacs?

I would choose death, both sound terrifying.

        Cech
        Lichtsteiner/Mustafi/Kos/Monreal
        Guendouzi/Xhaka
        Mkhi/Ozil/Iwobi
        Auba

        Leno/Sokratis/Kola/Torreira/Rambo/Suarez/Nketiah

No excuses, time to get work done, if this squad can't beat BATE at home, well, I'm going to be very sad most likely. Maybe even a little angry, who knows?

Also, it sucks that Bellerin is out, I'd like this lineup much more if we had Bellerin at right back, Sokratis instead of Kos at centreback, Torreira instead of Guendouzi, and Ramsey instead of Iwobi, but there's a reason I'm not a manager.

4-2-3-1, with Ozil at CAM. 6-0 to the Arsenal.

If we do not advance today, I'll be #EmeryOut.

No joke—there is no excuse to not advance. If you can't get past this, it's not going to work out.

Extreme? Maybe, but we shouldn't even be in this position.

I agree that we shouldn't be in this position, but it's gonna take a lot for me to be #EmeryOut in year 1. Losing in the Europa League to BATE is a red flag for sure, but it's still a project.

The actual worst part will be the casual fans who start saying Wenger would've done better or that he shouldn't have been forced out, anyone who questions that decision is certainly not someone worth listening to.

It's the one type of thing that would lead me to feel that way in the first year.

Finishing in sixth? That's fine and honestly expected. Going out of domestic cups? That's fine, winning one would be nice but we need all hands on deck for other things.

But going out in the first round of the knock-out stages to BATE...inexcuseable.

It's gonna depend on more than the result for me, but if we come out flat, play poorly crash out of Europe, then continue a downward spiral play wise, I'd be on that train.

I will say it moves my meter a significant amount though.

Yep I’m with you. Completely unacceptable.

“Project” or not, there is simply zero excuse to not be able to past a side like BATE.

I’m all in for giving this project time, but there are some things that just will not be tolerated.

Ozil was pretty great considering he hasn't been in the team forever. I was very happy with the way he played, and I think he would've looked better had Mhki and Iwobi been on form. I think it's time to drop Mhki for Suarez, or anybody at this point(SAKA PLS) he's just not got the quality that we require from his position. Ozil tracked back more than I've seen in awhile, he wasn't good defensively, but it's more effort than I've seen in awhile, I hope he gets a run out against Southampton as well.

I hope soon that we can just run out Sokratis and Kos, leave Mustafi on the bench.
