you need to learn the rules mate

there is no last defender rule, its whether at the moment of contact or foul the attacker is denied a goal scoring opportunity and seeing as the foul occured with the ball bouncing around their ears neither player had control therefore it cant be a red card

unless you consider the foul to be of such a violent nature that the dismissal was for violent behaviour ?or a proffesional foul where he was cut down to prevent a move which would of resulted in a clear goal scoring opportunity

this "rule" is as misunderstood as the old
"But he got the ball" which is irrelevent when tackling form behind

I can only assume the ref decided Vermalen denied a goal scoring opportunity, which by the letter of the law he did nt but ive seen Pens given for less sometimes you just have to throw your hands up and then carry on

we won anyway so it all comes out in the wash

The Fa is very reluctant to overturn red cards by refs as they feel it underminds them, so I dont expect Arsenal to appeal id rather lose vermalen for 2 games and get him back then see him do a "rio" and get a 4 game ban
    "whats wrong with him?"

    "can he play?"
"boss he does nt know who he is!"

Last defender, denying a goal scoring opportunity...same difference. But it looks like Arsene is appealing.

      Arsenal to appeal Vermaelen red.

        Not really.

If the referee judges that another player can get back and prevent a goal scoring opportunity, its not a red. So if the last defender fouls its in the referees judgement rather or not its a red.

I agree that on this occasion it should've been a red, but there are instances that just because its the last man, it doesn't make it a red.

So if Wenger fails with the appeal how many games does TV get? It is just a 1 match ban isn't it? It's only a 3 match ban if it was deemed a dangerous tackle. Correct? Plus if the appeal fails they usually add another game ban onto it for being a frivolous claim. Taking a chance aren't they?

All claims are not judged to be frivolous. An appeal such as this isn't frivolous, since it was really a 50/50 call, and not a clear act of violence.

I don't like the appeal considering it was only a one-match ban. If it were three, I can see the point in appealing. I say take the match, give Tommy V a rest ahead of Barca and get on with the game. Not even going to bother discussing the original call, as it's a subjective rule and what's done is done.

              PS - Three points.

Sky confirms that the appeal has failed. 1 match ban.

as i said im suprised we would bother but looks like no extra ban so harm no foul

and you honestly think theres no difference between being the last defender and denying a goal scoring opportunity? lol

At least TVM will be rested for the Barca game. But now Silvestre will have to step it up against Birmingham.

Birmingham away will be a tricky fixture so we'll have to remain focused. Losing Vermaelen and having to see a defense consisting of Campbell and Silvestre is scary. We need the 3 points to keep pace with the leaders

Wenger may drop Song into Central Defense and play diaby/denilson as the holding player at least i hope so

cause lets be honest i could outrun Cambell and Silvestre and im fat!

Thats what I'm hoping for as well. Put Song at the back and put Denilson, Diaby, and Cesc in the midfield like arseblogger said.

Anything that keeps Silvestre out of the lineup is a win in my book.

Rumor has it that Gallas may be back in time for the Barca game.

The problem is, he's been injured and will need time to get back into the swing of things, and I'm not sure I'd want to just throw him out there against Barca.

I would rather have an injured Gallas ahead of any CB we got besides Sol and of course TV5.

True. I do think Song will end up playing as a CB though if Gallas isn't ready.
