But you have to keep in mind that Davis and Jones are two very different players.
Tactically, you can play them in the same position, which is what Klinsmann did, but you're going to get two very different outcomes/styles of play from either of them. In lieu of saying it word-for-word myself, check out Matthew Doyle's Armchair Analyst piece that I posted a couple posts back.
It's hard to really classify it based off one snapshot, unfortunately. For example, if I'm right, that snapshot came after a failed attack down our left side, with Nigeria then switching fields to attack down their left, which would explain both Dempsey and Bradley's positioning.
The easiest part for me would be when you watch it defensively, the four midfielders applied pressure/support in the same manner that you'd expect from the diamond. A 4-3-2-1 or a 4-2-3-1 would each have their own ways of applying defensive pressure and/or keeping shape.
