I will always remember having one of my teammates from Italy just taking the piss out of me after Taibi let that goal in. Lol I can still hear his voice.

I just dug out the programme from that match just for reference. Can't believe I found it.

He’s up there with Massimo Taibi and Alexis Sanchez with worst signings in the last 30 years at the club.

Most matches played for a two year stretch with (at the time) a top 3 defence in the league (if I recall correctly) doesn't count as a positive role during Ole's run? Don't get me wrong, I've never considered him to be on the tier of a Varane or VDV but he was absolutely instrumental for us during that time.

Now that we actually have defenders who can play football a certain way, he's on the outside looking in but he definitely wasn't a bad signing like Alexis was.

Top 3 defense? Thats a gigantic stretch in my opinion. Also, saying Maguire is responsible for any clean sheet in that period is even more of a gigantic tic stretch. His entire career here has been incredibly poor.his best years Herr were average at beat and since then it's cringe.

Statistically, they were ranked that, but again, I don't remember 100%. I vaguely remember those stats being flashed during that time and it being a talking point.

As for the rest of your points, I disagree. Either way, he's not the man for us moving forward.

You sure you aren’t confusing just goals conceded? As far as I know, there really is no way to just say team X has the “3rd best defense” like that. If you mean conceded, then they were 3rd one year and 5th the following year. There are a hell of a lot of factors into that though like keeper, formation, style, etc. At no point do I remember Maguire being a shut down guy specifically or being much of anything positive. I’ll even throw out that Covid year as being nearly impossible to really take away anything from a season with a large interruption and no fans for half a season. You might be the sole United fan that doesn’t think he’s been a complete disappointment his entire tenure here.

It’s not important though. As you said, he’s not the man going forward hopefully.

I particularly enjoyed Maguire coming on vs Arsenal and promptly getting turned by Jesus and taking the yellow card.

Casemiro put him in a terrible position by losing the ball where he did right before that. But it was definitely kinda funny.

So I’ll try to post here a bit more often just so I don’t have to feel trolled along the way. The Europa win earlier was a pretty big win just from a mentality standpoint. After the magnificent 7 last week, it would have been very easy to fall back into a trap. They also allowed a goal to level the score at halftime. Another potential trap. The resilience is encouraging even if it’s expected for them to win, especially with how difficult it has been in recent years.

I will say this. Bruno is a frustrating man in many ways but when he scored on Thursday the team really did surround him in a way that seemed genuinely backing. I guess that’s encouraging. Still need an out and out striker though. Just someone that’ll take the ball and take charge of balls in the box.

Not a great game but took care of business and on to the next round. Would really like a European trophy this year just to keep momentum going strong.

Really wasn’t a great game. Lads seem to be a bit tired and MaGuire really is full on shambles. I actually dislike VAR but this was exactly why it’s a necessary tool. No idea wtf Mitrovic was thinking but thank you? Lol

Well, he's always acted like a moronic teenager out there and it's incredibly refreshing to see a player punished for not only touching an official, but for being in their face, shouting at them, etc. What's ridiculous is if he hadn't touched him, he likely wouldn't have been booked.

Hopefully we see similar punishments soon, but I won't hold my breath.

Is this the sly Bruno dig, or? It’s difficult to honestly tell sometimes and I mean that respectfully.

Football has a culture of words / expressions going unpunished. It’s just the way it is. Very few other sports allow the F off expression or demonstration to be so routinely expressed without punishment. Zero tolerance really doesn’t bode well in a sport that has so few actual rules and is taken as religion in so many places.

Mitrovic was kind of a ground ball maybe because rather than just contact, he made it to a point of with conviction? We’ve all seen worse. I just don’t know how to make that black or white when emotions are what they are. We are already at a point where we are looking to slow down the game with replays and ruin a bit of the organic nature of a sport. I would have had no problem at all if that was left a corner. I can get that frustration. I prefer real time decisions. Even if wrong, it’s more organic and I hate that we are taking that out of the game.

There is a golden age of this sport but I’m not sure if it’s this current time. Talent and fitness wise it absolutely is but there are a ton of players in history just between our two clubs that wouldn’t last a half if they played today.
