MLS withdraws first teams from U.S. Open Cup
https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/...-play-reserves
U.S. Soccer announced it has ruled against allowing MLS to remove its first teams from U.S. Open Cup and replace them with teams from MLS Next Pro.
The United States Soccer Federation announced it has ruled against allowing Major League Soccer (MLS) to remove its first teams from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and replace them with teams from its developmental league, MLS Next Pro.
"Major League Soccer has requested to allow MLS Next Pro teams to represent MLS in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. After thoughtful consideration, we have informed MLS that the U.S. Soccer staff recommendation, which was adopted by the Pro League Taskforce, is that the request be denied," USSF said in a statement.Comment

Damn. Jesus Ferreira was going to Spartak Moscow and MLS stepped in and stopped it.
Pretty wild that a league blocks a move the club and player agreed to.Comment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
This popped up in my news earlier
Maryland requests study of potential MLS Next Pro stadium sites in Baltimore
The Maryland Department of Commerce recently requested the Maryland Stadium Authority to study two city-owned sites in Baltimore -- Carroll Park and Swann Park -- for a potential stadium that would hold between 7,500 and 10,000 spectators and host an MLS Next Pro team that would feed into D.C. United, and possibly a top-flight women’s pro club.
I wonder if this would lead to getting an actual MLS team too. Unless DC United wanted to move.Last Movie Watched: Morbius (2022).

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I don't remember the last time TFC had three consecutive clean sheets.
Great start to the year. Only had four wins last year; already got two wins this year. Similiar thing with Lorenzo Insigne -- had four goals last year, already has two this season.Last edited by bhurst99; 03-09-2024, 08:13 PM.Comment

40,000 casuals paid $500 per ticket for this, LOL.

Miami is scheduled to play in Toronto on Oct. 5. Argentina plays a World Cup qualifier the following week. Good luck if anyone plans to buy tickets for the Toronto match expecting Messi to playComment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I like how it's being made out to be a recent decision that they aren't going to play. I have little doubt the decision to not have them travel six hours to play on artificial turf would have been made shortly after the schedule came out. Messi is 36; he's simply not going to play every road game, especially with Copa America on the horizon.

This includes the Whitecaps, of course, who nevertheless heavily promoted the Inter Miami game as if Messi & Suarez were coming, and raised the face value of their single game tickets by EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY PERCENT. Standard cheapo tickets go for $21 CAD; the Whitecaps set the cheapest single-game tickets for Inter Miami at $190 CAD. And then of course the scalpers took over.
So to summarize:
1. MLS completely screwed over Vancouver by releasing a schedule ensuring that Messi would never come here
2. The Whitecaps nevertheless decided to completely alienate casual fans by promoting Messi to the gills and raising prices through the roof
3. With the slightest bit of common sense, the casual fans would've realized the whole thing was a fraud, but they stupidly decided to fork out hundreds and thousands of dollars regardless
Nobody covered themselves in glory here.Attached FilesLast edited by DrJones; 05-25-2024, 01:50 PM.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that. Re: MLS Discussion Thread
I will say that if I held a Whitecaps season ticket, I would have 100% seen that and tried to get as much money for my ticket as possible. I’d have put it up on StubHub for the entire price of the season ticket at first just in case someone bites.Comment

Re: MLS Discussion Thread
Thing is, the Whitecaps could've come out of this looking like heroes. They could've kept their huge markup and said at the time of single game tickets becoming available, "If Messi doesn't play, the markup gets refunded to your account; you only get charged the standard price for a ticket in that section". Worst case scenario, they still get 50,000 butts in seats (average attendance is 15-20K) and gain a fan-friendly rep when Messi inevitably no-showed.Last edited by DrJones; 05-26-2024, 05:25 PM.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
