I agree that top flight is important, but I don't think it's worth selling the soul for. I don't mind the plaything aspect as some of the UKers probably do, but basically attempting to change a clubs identity just feels wrong to me, especially in Europe where clubs are essentially representatives of the city. If you don't represent that city, it's hard for people to get behind it, I imagine.

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
Given the choice, would people in England honestly choose to keep their colors and crest intact and then have to remain in the lower leagues, or give up the colors and crest to break a 50-something year spell in the lower leagues and move up to the Premier League?
If they would choose the former, I give them a lot of credit.
I feel like 95% of Americans would choose the latter. I have a similar attitude as Dayman. I wouldn't necessarily be happy with it, but as a crazy guy once said, "Just win, baby"University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

And that crazy man never changed the identity of the team. Personally, even if Arsenal ended up in League Two, I'd support them through and through as long as they were the Gooners. Because that means something to me. Change the name, change the colors, forget tradition, and what do I have left except a name.Comment

Cardiff are a very similar sized club to Bristol City, last season one was relegated and one was promoted from the Championship and whilst my club may be a trying to find it's feet again right now i'm proud of the fact we still have our identity and history. Of course I would love to see my club in the Premier League instead of League 1 but ultimately i'm not that concerned what league we are in, i'll be there supporting them whatever league we are in.
To be fair to Cardiff fans there are many who were/are unhappy about what has happened there but while they are having success they will tolerate it, but at some point they will fall flat on their face (that's football) and the fans will revolt. I was at Cardiff last season for our game and whilst there is no love lost between the fans there was at least a common ground found over their selling out.
Sadly the Cardiff situation is symptomatic of they way modern football is going, there are many problems that have led to the casual fan feeling out of touch and a real disconnect with today's players. Of the all the problems there are the main one is money. TV rights, player wages and ticket prices are extortionate. UEFA's financial fair play is a waste of time and until they get their heads out of the sand it's only going to get worse.
Can people really say they like the fact that only 4 teams can win the top division in England, 2 in Spain etc. I saw a salary cap mentioned and I would agree it would be a good step to take but will never happen. At the end of the day money talks.
Still, at least I can take Bristol City to the top of world football in FM!Last edited by jb1; 08-26-2013, 08:03 AM.Comment

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
I can sympathize somewhat with the Cardiff fans. When Jeffrey Lurie bought the Philadelphia Eagles he immediately changed our historic Kelly green/white/ and silver uniforms to butt ugly midnight green, and despite the success that has come with Lurie(relative success?)a lot of the older fans(who remember the old uniforms) are still furious with him.Comment

Bringing in the dragon to the crest was so over the top. They are the bluebirds, not the red dragons. It wasn't necessary at all to change the crest. Keep the crest, dump in the money, and make the premiership.
If I was a fan I would be furious. After yesterday I'd be slightly less furious.YNWAComment

Loved seeing the banners at the Hull match held up by some supporters.
"Hull City AFC: a club not a brand."

For what it's worth, there were a lot of rumours floating about in the past 3/4 weeks that Red Bull were interested in Leeds. Although the amount of gossip floating about meant it was hard to say what it was they were interested in. If we were rebranded like Red Bull New York (say, Red Bull Leeds), I would confidently say that there would be a sizable drop in attendance.Comment

On a slightly off topic note....I'm having trouble deciding if I purchase FIFA 14 when it comes out, or hold off until I get a PS4.Chicago Bears

Portland Trail Blazers
San Francisco Giants

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
Hull City's owner want to change the team name to Hull Tigers instead of Hull City. The owner called Hull City "irrelevant" and dislkied the name "City" as it is too "common".
Another banner paraded around said, “Your Company, Our Club, Hull City AFC” and “Forever Hull City AFC”.Comment

I worked this morning and was supposed to be going back in tonight.
Just as I'm getting ready I get a phone call telling me I don't need to come in as we'll be really quiet. Just like that, I'm watching the game tonight.Comment
