Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
That fee and wages is pretty insane for an 18 year old.
To be fair though, the last time United paid 30 mil for a defender it worked out pretty well for them.Comment

I like Shaw a lot but honestly I'd love to see Bertrand get a proper chance at Chelsea before we explore other options.
He's severely underrated in my opinionComment

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
You know British players are well, well overpriced in the transfer game. But 30 million pounds for a LB, who still isn't a number 1 choice for his country is just stupid and foolish. I bet Phillip Lahm, who can play a ton places on the pitch, isn't worth that much"If you have a linebacker on him, you might as well start singing their fight song." -- WSU coach Bill Doba on Reggie Bush

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
I disagree with you on that one.
30 mil is a ton of money, but there are not many good left backs on the market. Shaw, with his offensive tendencies, has the potential to turn into a Bale type of player. And United is terribly weak at LB, Evra is a shell of his old self and Buttner is awful.
Buying Shaw would make more sense than buying Mata ever did.Khalabeeb - Tony Henderson

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
Nope, not really.
Bale wasn't a winger that he is today when he was at Southampton. He was a left back with offensive tendencies who played solid but unspectacular defense and provided offensive support with his pace and crossing. The only big difference is that Bale had brilliant free kicks, and Shaw is a bit more classical left back.
No offense to you, but it seems like you're talking about Bale of the last couple of years, and that's a ridiculous comparison. Go back and watch some of hig games at Soton, then watch Shaw play this year. Bale hadn't become this attacking menace until 2010-ish when they mobed him to the wing and basically gave him permission to go wherever he wants on the field. Shaw probably won't be as good, becuse Bale is amazing, but there's a ton of similarities in the early stages of their career.
But it's easier to watch only the top teams and talk about Bale from Real and call me an idiot when I compare them. Because what do I know, I only watched almost every PL and Championship game in the last 10 years.
"The only similarity is that they're left footed". Yeah, okay.Khalabeeb - Tony Henderson

What I find more staggering about Shaw is that he seems to be an accomplished Premier League left back now. I'd put good money on him locking down the England LB slot in the next 5 years, particularly as Baines is nearly 30.
I really hope he doesn't leave Southampton, as they are one of the teams who seem to value British players above others. It's one of the reasons why I'm quite happy to see Liverpool win the league.Comment

And to be fair, I never called you an idiot. I should have expanded upon my post to list why I think they are different and/or would have different career paths.
Ever since he popped up on Chelsea's radar I too have watched Shaw to see what Chelsea could potentially be getting. 30 mil is a lot but he's going to lock down that position for years to come so the return will level out IMO.Comment

Re: The 2013-14 EPL Discussion Thread
The main difference is that Shaw is a natural defender and, as KG pointed out, Bale is a freak of an athlete.
Claiming to have watched every game in multiple tiers for the last 10 years doesn't actually strengthen your argument. If you really look at the two players you can definitely see they are very different. Shaw will likely go on to become a monstrous LB, remember that Bale was considered a massive flop until he was moved further up the pitch. Whereas nobody is talking about moving Shaw anywhere because he's one of the best left backs in the league.Comment
