His replacement is already on the team, and I'd like to see him get the starts. Sakho. Lovren was a good purchase, but yes, Liverpool needs a bona fide star central defender at some point. Midfield is also becoming a concern. Lucas shouldn't be starting, and Joe Allen isn't exactly a great first backup. I'd like to see Emre Can start getting some looks.

Re: The 2014-15 EPL Discussion Thread
There's still a bunch of players that need to be weeded out on your way to becoming a consistent power again, it will take some time. I'd agree with your midfield assessment as well. To be honest, Rodgers toughest test is going to be whether or not he can drop Gerrard as a central figure in your midfield. I realize he was great for you guys last season, but it isn't going to happen like that again and Gerrard can't be a crucial feature if your club wants to move forward. He's not a Pirlo type player, which means he will get increasingly less effective with age. You guys have the same situation we have had with Lampard the last couple years, still a great player, but not the world class midfielder you need to progress. His replacement is already on the team, and I'd like to see him get the starts. Steven Gerrard will either make or break Rodgers. Speaking as purely a supporter of the game, as opposed to a rival club supporter, it will be very interesting watching your club over the next couple years. I'm actually still not convinced Rodgers is the man that will take you forward, despite the fantastic season you guys had. I've said before to my buddies who are Pool fans that I think Rodgers is Van Gaal to your Bayern. He's going to help push your club forward a great deal but he won't be your Heynckes.
That's my opinion anyways. Sorry I have too many friends that are Pool supporters.Comment

If Emre Can gets a couple of starts and can establish himself I think he will be a much better option to Lucas and Joe Allen. At the same time Glen Johnson shouldn't be starting he hasn't been convincing sense he came back from injury last season. His replacement is already on the team, and I'd like to see him get the starts. Re: The 2014-15 EPL Discussion Thread
Well, most of our fullbacks aren't ready yet, since Moreno is up to speed yet and Flanagan is injured. So I think that Rodgers was thinking about Johnson as RB and Enrique as LB, but then decided that Manquillo is better option.
I like Lovren, even though I was opposing his purchase. But he looks like he's going to be our next commanding CB and that he has overcome some issues he had at Lyon. And yes, Skrtel gets away with lots of fouls and I can't wait to see Sakho play instead. I think that somewhere over this season our defence will be Manquillo-Lovren-Sakho-Moreno. But before we have to figure out what to do with Johnson(who is probably going to stay this season, since managers doesn't like 2 youngsters as their only players on one position), Agger(he is probably at the moment our 4th defender, but who knows, since when he is healthy he can be our best D) and also with Coates, since he need playing time to improve(and he showed in preseason that he can be great defender one day).
And yes, I'm hoping for Can instead of Lucas, his running and energy would be great for our 1-2 midfield, where Can and Henderson are box-to-box midfielders, and Gerrard is deep-lying-playmaker. Lucas was good in first half, but he is just a defensive midfielder, we doesn't offer anything in attack. Allen actually gave us some passing and speed that helped to move away from our goal and put more pressure on Soton's D.Comment

Re: The 2014-15 EPL Discussion Thread
IMO Pool needs a player like Lucas sitting in front of your back 4. Hendo is your box-to-box with Stevie as your deep playmaker. Lucas will stay back and is good in the tackle, plus he's a vet of the league. It's a shame injuries robbed him of a better career. He was starting to lessen the blow of Alonso leaving although I felt Pool fans wanted him to be something he wasn't.

Re: The 2014-15 EPL Discussion Thread
Yes, we do need a true defensive midfielder. However, Lucas hasn't played nearly up to what he did before the injuries. He turns the ball over way too much and is lackadaisical on the ball. That is bad in any system, but especially damaging for that position in this system where turnovers anywhere other than the final third put the central defense in an especially horrible position.Comment

This is indeed where he falls short. It is frustrating to watch but you just kind of learn to live with it when it comes to Lucas.YNWAComment
