Anyone here play Soccer? (Rec or otherwise)

Noticed there were a few threads for this in the old forums, but none here, so I figured I'd ask. Anyone out there who plays? (most likely recreationally or maybe HS or even college, but you never know.)

After not having played anything past the sixth grade, I picked up Indoor Soccer last year and really enjoy it. Our team isn't all that good (we lost tonight 11-4... and that's one of our better performances ) but it is a great time and we have fun with it. So, anybody else out there playing (outdoor or indoor?)

Re: Anyone here play Soccer? (Rec or otherwise)

I play friendly matches every week with my friends and whoever else is there that night (7v7; 8v8, 9v9) and we've also joined a few tournaments. Started out with futsal roughly 7 years ago when I never played a single second of football in my life then it just slowly overtook basketball for me as my sport of choice. Been playing in outdoor fields for the past 4 years (artificial turf). I'm pretty sure I've improved since I first started playing, but I really wish I played since I was a young kid.

I play in a 5 side Sunday league. Arena, which is basically futsal with walls and mild contact.

Same. But on Thursdays and with heavy contact, because old guys want to feel alive again.

Our league is 6 a side (plus subs), and they allow mild contact. There are walls too. I don't know the technical term, I guess. LOL.

Ours is more or less full contact, just no tackling because the ground is actually plastic. You get munched if you fall.

We actually won a game tonight for the first time! Went down 3-0 at the half, but scored 5 in the second to win it.

There is a Sunday afternoon group that plays here in Brisbane I join sometimes. Just got some new boots and looking forward to trying them out.

reviving this thread because I just joined a 5-a-side that plays M/W/F as I attempt to get myself back into a reasonable(read: not round) shape.

Any tips from the 5-a-side veterans?

It will probably be faster than you think it is. Like if you’ve mostly played field soccer, and even if you have watched 5-a-side before, it will still likely be faster than you anticipated. That’s how it was for me at least.

Be prepared for lots of sprinting, although I guess it could depend on your league.

I played in my first game today, it was... an experience. I got told to ease up a couple times, as I'm definitely just a freight train if I start running. There's also a lot of communication needed, which I obviously lacked, I just did my best Ozil impression of hoping someone would be on the end of my passes without queueing them(Also my passes were not very good)

The flow of the game was definitely interesting, and like you stated, very fast. As a fat guy whom has worked behind desks and in offices for far too long I definitely took some offensive and defensive possessions off just to catch up to myself.

I generally don’t cross the halfway line into my own half, or at least I try not to.

In 5-a-side I always try to take just one touch and get rid of it. Basically, try to pick out your pass before you get the ball.

I find 5-a-side helps you more when you transition to 11v11 than the flip-side.

Does "get rid of it" mean "take a shot on goal regardless of how good your angle is"? Because if so, then yeah me too.
