Can someone ELI5 why onside is a good or bad rule in soccer?

I just starting watching MLS because I'm American and my team is Orlando SC. Can someone explain to me the offside rule? In what ways is it good? In what ways is it bad? Is there anything you would change?

New to soccer. Decided to pay for MLS live for the year. I've played FIFA since I was a little kid, born 1990. I'm now 25. Once Orlando got a team is when I decided to really start watching. Sorry for dumb questions.

I am a big hockey fan. From what I can tell the offside rule takes away from say a breakaway chance like you would get in hockey.

Can someone explain this all to me like I'm 5?

I understand every single rule except this one.

Why isn't that consider a breakaway such as hockey for example?

If you time the pass right and the attacker has some speed, then yes it could turn into a 1 v 1 vs. the keeper.

Uhh so basically just have to get used to it and I will enjoy it. I've always loved FIFA. Always caught a few games here and there. I'm happy that the Tampa area has a team I can cheer for. So now I can finally get into soccer like I've been wanting too. $15.99 is a good price too IMO.

Thank you for all the help, I appreciate it very much!

Wow, that's a great deal, and one I didn't know existed because I subscribed for the first time this year and paid full price. Still well worth it.

I catch up every week with the condensed games.

Re: Can someone ELI5 why offside is a good or bad rule in soccer?

Comparing hockey (or basketball) to soccer is tough, if just for the difference in size of the playing surfaces. It doesn't always come across on TV, but those pitches can be huge.

Take away offsides, and you'd probably get a cluster f*** with forwards at midfield anticipating (correctly or incorrectly) a change of possession, and blindly booking it to the opposing box. Teams might then assign a defender to just sit back in front of their keeper at all times, just to prevent easy 1-v-1 situations. It's weird to think about lol.

Yeah it is a bit tricky at first, but once you understand it, I think it is a good idea. I used to play striker and would often make brakes from within my own half (were you can not be off side).

Also you can't be offside if the other team is the one to pass the ball back.
