There’s no way they let USA, Mexico and Canada all automatically qualify.

I don't see why Canada would agree to a joint bid if they don't get automatic qualification.

Definitely will happen. It happened with Japan and Korea in 2002. And with a 48-team World Cup, it gets much easier.

FIFA decided for 48 teams in 16 groups of 3. Terrible.

The 8 groups of 4 we have is a perfectly fine format. There's no reason to change it besides money.

The group stage like this just can't work. Besides the bigger ammount of uninteresting teams (yay!), what worries me the most is that there's no way to make a 3-team group to be fair. The two teams that play the final match in the group will have a big advantage knowing exactly what result they need to eliminate the third one.

          What a mess.

Yes they will. There are 48 teams and a host has always gotten an automatic spot in every major joint bid tournament.

At least the NA bid won! Got about 66% of the vote. Can't believe so many thought Morocco would be better. Majority of the stadiums they'd have been using hadn't even been built.

Under the new format, 6 countries from concacaf make it. Old system had 3 with 1 more having to go to a play in tournament with others. So the United bid should mean these 3 qualify, leaving 3 spots still open. USA and Mexico most years qualify anyways, so really, this will be giving these countries 1-2 extra spots.

I’m thinking of stadiums that would be used throughout the tournament.

Azteca for the opening and final?
                Mercedes Benz (GA)
                BC Place (BC)
                CenturyLink (WA)
                Gillette Stadium (MA)
                US Bank/TCF Bank (MN)
                Rogers Centre (ON)
                Montreal Olympic (QC)
                Levi’s (CA)
                Giants Stadium (NY)
                Cotton Bowl (TX)
                Soldier Field (IL)
                Olímpico Universitario (CDMX)

Those would be my picks. I assume the majority of games will be in the US, and they would want to base teams as close to each other as possible, so groups would be based in Toronto/IL/MN, Montreal/NY/MA, Vancouver/WA and then CA/TX/CDMX.

I’m sure the Euro being based across several nations in 2020 will give some idea of the logistics of having a tournament spread across such a huge distance. And I’m also sure many more stadia will be built between now and 2026 to accommodate the World Cup. I might have to fly back home for a month and catch a couple games if they hold some in Toronto and Illinois. If they hold some in Ohio, even better.

Those are the potential sites. Also having the World Cup at TCF would be an absolute travesty. (Minneapolis pulled out though, same with Chicago)

from what I recall from the bid book NJ/NY will be the final, and LA will be the opener

Not having stadiums doesn't really affect bids. In fact, that can be a plus because those huge construction contacts are usually given out to friends and cronies of people involved in the bid process.

Also the quarters on will be in the USA

                      The following are locked in:

                      10 games (7 group stage, 2 R32, 1 R16) in 3 Canadian venues (Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto)
                      10 games (7 group stage, 2 R32, 1 R16) in 3 Mexican venues (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey)
                      60 games (34 group stage, 12 R32, 6 R16, 8 QF/SF/3P/F) in 10 American venues (TBD from list of 17 candidates)

Since Vancouver isn't getting any, I hope Seattle gets a few games.

I still think it's bizarre. And having 3 of the 6 CONCACAF qualification spots already decided is lame. But the WC back in the US is great.

The fact that a team qualifies most years doesn't mean they deserve it every time. The current USMNT definitely did not deserve it. If Michael Bradley had been gifted another WC trip just because, that would have sheer stupidity, and hurt the team long term.

The important thing to remember about the World Cup is that it's not for determining which country is the best at the Beautiful Game, and it really never has been. No single elimination, single game tournament is ever about determining the "best" it's about excitement, upsets, and 'thrills.' They're trying to sell this game and tournament to as many eyes as possible, so between expansion of the World Cup and having a triple host auto-qualify you gotta remember what it's about, entertainment.

But the format potentially invites less entertainment. I'd say it's more about money.

People love watching terrible college teams beat better college teams in a single elimination, single game tournament every year.

Everything is about money, that's just obvious.
