    2023–2024 English Football Thread

****ing turnstiles delay—I was up and ready! Coffee is made!

But really, surprised to learn the issue is that clubs have gone to full digital ticketing—only now, in 2023 has that happened.

One match into hate-watching Everton this season ... I think I'll check out some of the Championship instead for a while. Oh wait ESPN+ is down. Nice.

Pep was upset with the attitude Haaland had towards Bernardo Silva right before half. Haaland wanted a ball over the top, didn't get it, and ripped into Silva before the whistle.

It's crazy because Josko Gvardiol was more expensive if you look at Euros or Dollars. Shows how much exchange rates can fluctuate over time. Also looking at defender transfers in history, I didn't realize Matthijs de Ligt shows up in the top 10 twice.

On a footballing note, and not entirely a laughing at Spurs note—they suddenly have a very large amount of goals to replace.

Yellow shown to a keeper for being a moron before a penalty? Love it—now be consistent and do it every time. Play your mind games from the line, stop slowing down the damn game.

With the location of the white on the shirt, Chelsea’s kit very much reminds me of a “do your best to recreate the real thing” in PES, circa…2006. That was after you put in the badge pixel by pixel, of course.

Please oh please start booking players more for putting up the imaginary card. It is so pathetic, as is the anti-football mindset that it represents.

Anthony Taylor missed the Jackson one because it looked like someone kicked the ball off him but he got the rest right. Still funny that he gave McAllister a YC when he did it but not Gallagher who’s tackle was actually yellowish.

The YC TAA got for “time-wasting” was a joke though. He didn’t even take that long to throw it in.

There are so many times where you can see players genuinely trying to take a throw in but their teammates are taking awful positions and the full back is clearly frustrated.

Not looking forward to referees viewing each of these as deliberate time wasting (while ignoring obvious and actual time wasting).

True. But if they are putting an emphasis on it, I'm fine with it because going forward hopefully players will have it in their head "ok I REALLY need to throw this in ASAP."

I would rather that than players pretend like they need a full 30 seconds to throw it in when they don't. I have zero trust in players to not be devious and cynical and deliberately misleading at all times.

Throw ins have irked me for the longest, especially seeing an attacker forgo a quick throw in that could result in retaining possession only to wait for the fullback who ends up giving it to the other team.

That annoys me far more than them not being taken quickly once set. A fullback getting to the throw quickly and then trying to pick a pass, fine. It’s when a player strolls over to the touchline where the real time wasting occurs—not nearly as much as when the ball is above their head.

It was a penalty. Onana got away with one.
