Can’t even imagine being as good as Yamal at 16.

I’d have been nuclear levels of insufferable.

Will be interesting to see how long the praise continues for Jesse Marsch if he continues to win 1 out of every 7 matches.

Drawing England in my Scottish friend's Euro pool has been the funniest thing so far. Not only has the trolling of him and the Irish guy in the group chat been the best, I am now guaranteed at least a $100 win. That more than triples if they can somehow beat Spain.

So here's the thing. Canada Soccer is incompetent, corrupt, and close to bankruptcy.

In 2018 they bet against themselves, signing away all broadcast/sponsorship rights until 2038 for a handful of magic beans. To everyone's shock, Canada has subsequently established themselves as a rising power in CONCACAF, meaning Canada Soccer now faces rising expenses while most of their vastly increased revenues get funneled to "private interests"* To put this into perspective, Soccer Australia received about $21M USD from TV/sponsorships in 2023 - Soccer Canada received about $3M US.

It's a miracle that someone of even Marsch's modest profile is coaching Canada, because we can't afford it. Canada's 3 MLS teams are paying the bulk of his salary. By reaching the semis, Marsch has guaranteed Canada Soccer to finish 2024 in the black. And because of the off-field issues, a lot of Canadian soccer fans figured it was going to be all downhill from 2022. So beating Peru and Venezuela (Canada's 1st 2 victories over South American competition in 24 years), tying Chile, and not getting embarrassed by Argentina is a huge shot in the arm, even if Canada didn't look great in doing so. Marsch may well be overrated, but he'll be given a long leash until the World Cup (at which point he'll probably leave anyway).

*These private interests are "Canadian Soccer Business", a bunch of Toronto suits that operate the Canadian Premier League, a sub-USL league that play in front of 3000 fans in places like Hamilton and Victoria. The league exists allegedly to develop Canadian talent, but many assume it's a scam and that most of the money generated by Alphonso Davies et al is going into someone's pocket.

Technically the penalty win goes into the books as a draw. I knew about most of those issues - I believe March’s official title is something like MLS Canada Mens National Team Coach.

He’s done a nice job in a short period of time, will be interesting to see how it goes from here.

3 million views is crazy. Apparently my account is on various news outlets for that tweet. Still have hundreds of random people messaging me, lots of angry Argentina/non North American fans getting at me for calling it soccer and for saying I don't watch it.

True. I think I misread your initial comment - you were probably referring to the (over)praise that Marsch has been receiving from American fans/media, whereas I took it as commenting on Canadian fans/media possibly turning on him if/when results go south.

Better monetize that outrage while you can, Maj.

I sometimes wonder what percentage of fans around the world believe that "soccer" is an American term. 90%?

                    First step, create outrage
                    Second step, gain followers
Third step, use followers to help me make money

Given most people ripping me are ripping me for the American term of soccer, I'd say it's a fairly high percentage.

There's so many tweets coming my way, most seem to not be in English so I'm glad I'm not reading the outrage from non NA fans. Though the ones I do understand...people have issues. Talk about the amount of racist, homophobic, just overall offensive messages coming from people. I'm not even insulting anything, literally posted a 4 second clip of a guy flopping and people are outraged because I called it soccer and made a joke about something that's "a part of the sport". No wonder people hate social media, I'm not even a celeb and some people are so riled up about it.

Too bad of all those who are engaging in the tweet, 99% don't bother following me. Would've been fun having a high follower count for no reason at all.

It's the internet. People are unhinged, sports fans more than most.

I'm a relative Luddite. Only have a private Facebook account, have never posted anywhere except here and a few private FIFA Mobile Discord channels. I would've received mountains of abuse and threats in my FIFA days if people knew who I was; I don't know how public-facing devs put up with it.

SOCCER (yes I'm calling it soccer, sue me) fans are up there as the most extreme ones.

In terms of the "big 5", I'd say soccer is the worst. I don't know which I'd say is the "tamest" though. All sports (and anything in general) have their great and horrible fans. I'd say maybe basketball is the "tamest" when you compare an average fan to the average fan of other things. Possibly baseball because there's more kids at those games than you'd see at other sporting events. I'm also thinking which sport would get you in the least trouble for wearing the opposition jersey. Soccer you're definitely getting someone trying to fight you or worse. Football you're definitely getting heckled by people.

Maj should tweet, "Kobe's 81-point game was overrated", add #WeTheNorth, #BelieveWomen, a couple Lakers and NBA hashtags, see what happens.
