OS Roundtable: Is Customization in Sports Games Important to You?

The Golf Club

In the increasingly connected world of gaming, customization options have seemingly lagged behind in most console sports games (and games period) compared to what was commonplace earlier this decade across most every genre with PC gaming.

With that in mind, we're asking our staff about customization and how important it is -- and we're allowing your mind to wander a bit as to whether its time for console sports gamers to get the same type of customization options we were afforded at one time in the past in a galaxy that seems so far, far away.

I love customizing rosters especially. When it comes to The Show, I edit all of the cosmetic parts of my team. Helps immerse me. Need it.

Yes, very. I enjoy when I can put myself, and/or my friends, into a game. I also like the ability to edit player ratings, especially players in the draft pools.

Yes! That's why I loved Baseball Stars, AP2k8 and why I can't wait to play Golf Club.

I'm a huge customization fan. It helps satisfy fans who play a certain style or want certain things in their game.

Yes...it is a must. RPG games have it where you live out those fantasies and dreams. sports game should be treated the same way.

FIFA is my favorite game, but they have been really lax in customization beyond sliders and next gen practically dropped it all together. Big let down for me.

Customization and mods has become THE most important thing for me in gaming. The sports genre has been behind the times in that regard. Even though I'm a huge sports gaming fan, I have been slowly abandoning sports games as a result.

It's very important... The single player experience requires a deep customisation feature across the board.
...we held several meetings to discuss the future of the franchise. After going through those meetings, it became very clear that the vision I had for the game was different from where the leadership wanted to take it. I parted ways with EA shortly after...

"To be concrete about it, 10 times as much user content comes from the users as comes from us. So we think we are super productive and badass, but we cannot compete with our own customers as regards the production of content. The only company we ever met that kicked our *** is our customers. We would never try to compete with them." -Gabe Newell, Owner of Steam/Valve

I'd like the see the PS4 era reach a level of customization that finally rivals PC Mod capability...

In the past couple / few years, the trend with some titles (I'm looking at YOU, Madden) has regrettably been moving AWAY from that, but one can hope...

Re: OS Roundtable: Is Customization in Sports Games Important to You?

For me I personally love customisation in games. The two games I spend the most time playing are Football Manager and Out of the Park Baseball, and with those two games it's easy enough to do some complex customisation like putting my home town team in the English Premier League, or create a new take on MLB.
Some games limit the customisation (EA Sports seems to do this) by giving you a finite number of options. Think the only limit on customisation on for example a created team is your own imagination and ability.

Ability is the other aspect, with FM and OOTP it's relatively easy, and even though I'm not that good at say creating a jersey for OOTP there's a community out there that does it. What looks good about The Golf Club is that the customisation looks both complex yet simple, can rennet the old Links Golf Course Creator back in the early 2000s, that was easy enough to create a course, but to make the complex greens etc was a lot harder, this appears to have got that balance correct.
