TIGERS STUN BLUE JAYS IN 9TH

(normally I would have waited til the end of the series to post, but this game was just too awesome, that it had to have it's own post. Plus, I wanted to include the trades that happened afterwards.)

The Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays, the teams with the two best records in the American League, opened up their three game series in classic style, culminating in a come from behind win.

Detroit opened the scoring in the 4th, when Juan Soto singled in Javier Baez to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays came right back in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs. Teoscar Hernandez hit an RBI double to right, scoring Bo Bichette, then Lourdes Gurriel Jr. singled to center, plating Hernandez. The Jays led 2-1.

Detroit tied the game in the 5th, when Eric Haase took Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu deep to left. However, the Jays came right back in the bottom of the 5th, reclaiming the lead on a Bo Bichette double to right, scoring Josh Fuentes.

The Jays added a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th, on a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. home run to left, his 29th of the season, and later an RBI single by Fuentes. This put the Jays up 5-2 going into the 9th.

Jordan Romano came on in the 9th for the Jays to try to close it out. Romano had converted 40 of 43 save opportunities up to this point. He retired Spencer Torkelson, before Jonathan Schoop reached on an error, and Jeimer Candelario was hit by a pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate.

Riley Greene promptly doubled to right, scoring Schoop, cutting the lead to 5-3. Austin Meadows then pinch hit for Victor Reyes. On a 2-2 count, Meadows delivered, lining a 3 run home run just over the fence in right, putting the Tigers on top 6-5. Michael Fulmer retired the Jays in order in the bottom of the 9th securing the dramatic come from behind 6-5 win for the Tigers.

TIGERS ACQUIRE MAHLE, SIMS

Following the game, it was announced that the Tigers had acquired starting pitcher Tyler Mahle, and reliever Lucas Sims from the Cincinnati Reds, in exchange for starter Matt Manning, reliever Kyle Funkhouser, and prospect Joey Wentz.

Mahle was 9-7 in 21 starts with the Reds. He had a 2.74 ERA in 131 1/3 innings, with a 1.30 WHIP. Sims was 1-2 wiht 25 saves in 33 games for the Reds. He had a 2.41 ERA in 33 2/3 innings.

Manning was 5-4 in 20 starts for the Tigers. He had a 4.18 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in 112 innings. Funkhouser was 3-1 in 24 games with the Tigers. He had a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings. Funkhouser had started the season on the I.L. Wentz went 7-4 with a 4.93 ERA in 102 1/3 innings with Toledo.

Mahle is under team control through 2023. Sims is under team control through 2024, but both are due big raises in arbitration, a big reason the Reds were willing to let them go. Manning is under team control through 2027, so they get a quality starter at a cheaper cost for much longer. Funkhouser is under team control until 2026.

YANKEES ACQUIRE MULLINS

The Tigers weren't the only team to make a splash Thursday night. The New York Yankees announced that they had acquired CF Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for pitcher Luis Gil, and prospects Jasson Dominguez, and Oswaldo Cabrera. Mullins was hitting .288 with 22 HR and 55 RBI and 23 SB in 99 games with the O's. Dominguez was the Yankees top prospect, and ranked #3 overall. Cabrera was the Yankees #2 prospect.
