With their sweep over the Yankees, the Tigers (111-23) clinched the A.L. Central division, and ended their 8 year playoff drought.
The Blue Jays lead the East by 11 games over the Rays. The Astros lead the West by just a half game over the Angels. The Rangers are just 2 games back. The Twins (81-53) have a comfortable lead in the Wild Card race. The Rays (73-61) and Yankees (72-62) hold the last 2 Wild Card spots, with the Angels just a game back, and the Rangers just 2.5 games back.
In the National League, the Braves (88-46) lead the East by 14 games over the Mets. The Pirates (79-55) have a half game lead over the Brewers (78-55). In the West, the Dodgers (83-50) lead the Padres by 11 games. The Brewers, Mets (74-60), and the Cardinals (74-60) hold the Wild Card spots. The Padres are just 1.5 games back.
With the calendar rolling to September, the MLB rosters expand from 26 players to 28. Each team is able to call up one pitcher, and one position player. The Tigers called up pitcher Jason Foley, and IF/OF Tyler Nevin. Foley started the season in Detroit, but was optioned to Toledo after a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings. Nevin played 18 games in Detroit earlier this season, hitting .283 with 4 HR and 8 RBI.
The Tigers begin September with a three game series on the road against the Chicago White Sox (50-84). Matt Manning (10-2, 3.22) faces Michael Kopech (9-9, 3.72) in game 1. Eduardo Rodriguez (15-4, 3.48) faces Dylan Cease (6-13, 3.36) in game 2. Spencer Turnbull (17-2, 2.86) faces Chris Rodriguez (1-3, 2.25) in game 3. Following the series with the White Sox, the Tigers have an off day, then head to New York for a three game series against the Yankees.
