Lions stay perfect with 41-7 rout of Bengals, set sights on Chiefs

CINCINNATI — The Detroit Lions’ dominance just keeps rolling.

Behind a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense, the Lions dismantled the Cincinnati Bengals 41-7 on Sunday afternoon at Paycor Stadium, improving to 5-0 for the first time since 1991.

Quarterback Jared Goff was razor-sharp, completing 23 of 28 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to tight end Sam LaPorta, who finished with seven receptions for 107 yards. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs gashed Cincinnati on the ground, piling up 174 yards on 18 carries, including a 92-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter that silenced the home crowd.

“We came out here to make a statement,” Goff said. “We feel like we can beat anyone right now.”

Detroit’s defense made life miserable for Joe Burrow, who managed just 168 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Bengals (3-2) mustered only 209 total yards — less than Gibbs had by himself.

Fast start, strong finish
The Lions built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with LaPorta’s 18-yard touchdown grab and a David Montgomery 6-yard run. After Jameson Williams’ 19-yard touchdown in the second quarter, Gibbs delivered the knockout blow with his 92-yard dash, sending Detroit into halftime up 28-0.

Cincinnati’s lone bright spot came early in the fourth quarter when Burrow found Chase Brown for a 15-yard score. But Detroit answered with two Jake Bates field goals and a 40-yarder from Bates to put the game well out of reach.

Defensive clinic
Linebacker Alex Anzalone led the way with 14 tackles, while rookie Brian Branch added six stops. The Lions allowed just 61 rushing yards and forced two turnovers.

Looking ahead
The Lions now face perhaps their toughest test yet — a prime-time Sunday night road showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs (3-2).

“We know what’s ahead of us,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “Arrowhead is loud, it’s hostile, and they’ve got one of the best in the game at quarterback. But we’re not backing down from anybody.”

Kickoff in Kansas City is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

Dan Campbell’s Postgame Locker Room Speech

"Alright, bring it up!

That… that was a straight-up beatdown. Four quarters of physical, punishing football — exactly how we do it in Detroit.

Jared — you carved ‘em up like a Thanksgiving turkey. Gibbs — you took that 92-yarder and made their secondary look like it was running in quicksand. LaPorta — they couldn’t cover you if they had a net. And our O-line? Stone wall. Absolute stone wall.

Defense — you smothered them. Took away their run game, choked it out, and when they tried to pass? We were all over ‘em. That’s grit, that’s discipline, that’s us.

But hear me on this — enjoy this for a few minutes, then flip the switch. Next week it’s Kansas City. Prime time. Sunday night. National TV. Arrowhead is loud, hostile, and they’ve got one of the best quarterbacks in the game. They’re sitting there at 3-2 thinking they’re about to get right against us.

We’re not just walking in there to win — we’re walking in there to make a statement. To show the whole league that 5-0 isn’t luck, it’s who we are. We’re going to match their noise with our hits. And when that clock hits zero, the only thing quiet in that place will be their crowd.

Now get in here — 1, 2, 3… GRIT!"
