Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Coach Tovarich suffered an unfortunate yellow light of death that baffled doctors and he could not be resuscitated. However, through some fancy scientific magic stuff, Coach Tovarich has been cloned and couldn't resist the call of being a college basketball coach.

Maryland-Eastern Shore Athletic Director: I am pleased to announce Coach Tovarich as the next head coach of our Hawk program.

(All 4 attending media members snap pictures on their phones while the 3 fans in attendance clap lightly)

Tovarich: Thank you all for showing up. What an amazing turnout. I hope at least double this many show up to some of our games. I had no idea that my many year ago 2-year tenure as the head coach of the Shepherd FR team in Arizona was going to get me a Division 1 head coaching job. This is a D1 school, right? It's hard to tell. I'm not sure anyone really knows. Do any of the 7 of you have any questions?

Booster: I donated $20 dollars last night to this school, so I believe I'm the biggest booster it has ever had in it's history. And I just want to tell you that you'll be hearing from me frequently about what it gets used for.

Tovarich: We'll probably go to Walmart with it and buy a basketball. Whatever's left will likely go to my assistants. That's probably about as much pay as they deserve.

Different Fan: Are you aware of what you signed up for?

Tovarich: Yes, this is the worst team (on paper) in America. There's a reason they hired a guy who hasn't coached past a 9th grade team.

Reporter: What style of play can we expect?

Tovarich: I have no idea until I see my extensive roster of 9 whole players. I suspect we'll slow it down to a snail's pace so we don't tire out and lose every game by 40. We'll adjust when we figure out whatever kind of so-called talent they have, if any.

Reporter: You have 5 scholarships available. Will you be doing most of the recruiting or leaving it for your assistant, which, who are they?

Tovarich: Hold on, let me look up their names real quick (shuffles through some contacts in my phone). Odie Baker? I don't know who that is, so he must have been one of them. Devon Cobb I think is the other. They have no particular skills at anything, so I'll do as much as I can. I just hope I can find 5 people willing to play here. Thanks all for joining. I have a lot of work to do turning these people into something resembling basketball players.

I'm opting to leave the conferences alone. I spent 3 1/2 hours planning them out and moving them and I still didn't like some of it. At least this way, some of them were correct at some point in the universe....kinda

Glad you're back, and I look forward to the cynicism shining through as Tovarich coaches the worst team in America.

Starting over on a higher difficulty. Should not be 8-2. Either I'm not on the difficulty I thought I was last year or I just need to bump it up to make it more challenging, so ignore previous results. Slightly altered schedule. Take two of Coach Tovarich 2.0.

I was really confused about where all the posts went. Thanks for explaining.

Tovarich: We did a decent job hanging in there in the first half. Then we got worn down in the second half. It'd be nice to have some more people to rotate in to keep fresh. We can't rebound. Their PG got his own rebound THREE times in one sequence. I didn't know whether to laugh at him missing three layups or out-jumping at least three of my guys three times in a row. We have no real rebounding ability. We don't shoot well and that goes for contested layups. We don't defend overly well either. The effort was there. We must have deflected 15 passes and we didn't get a single one of the first 10? I hope we used up a lot of bad luck there. It quickly became apparent why we're the worst team in America. I'd have possibly figured that out in our scrimmage, but that got canceled due to lack of players.

Reporter: If you can't be competitive with NJIT, can you even win a game?

              Tovarich: Very possibly not.

Reporter: Did you bite off more than you can chew by jumping from coaching a team of HS FR to Division 1?

Tovarich: Also very possible. This season's going to test my patience. It's going to test their patience. I hope to replace almost the entire roster as soon as I can. This is a long-term rebuilding project, and I may get fired long before it's over.

Reporter: What are your goals for this season?

Tovarich: To get it over with so I can find some talent. Also, maybe to find the phone number for the previous coach so I can ask him why he gave scholarships to some of these people, and mainly, WHY DO I ONLY HAVE NINE PLAYERS ON MY ROSTER?

Reporter: You seem a bit frustrated.

Tovarich: Oh, you haven't seen anything yet.

Tovarich: Great to get the first career win under the belt. I hope the 300 people who were at the game weren't too bored watching us dribble it around in the second half, but apart from needing to work the clock when we're ahead, I can't be getting into track meets with anyone.

Reporter: Congrats on the win coach. You subbed at almost every stoppage the entire game. Do you worry your players won't get a rhythm when they are constantly in and out?

Tovarich: I have a lot of concerns about this team, that's not really one of them. I'm concerned if I can't keep my 7 semi-competent players fresh and end up having to go deeper in the bench. Whatever combo of the 7 are out there are going to get their minutes together. They'll all figure it out.

Reporter: Mirjacic and Moore already seem unhappy sitting on the end of the bench.

Tovarich: There are a lot of empty chairs down there, so they can switch to a different seat if they're unhappy with the one they're in.

Reporter: God help you @ Maryland.

Tovarich: I don't think he can.

Tovarich: I suppose that could have gone worse. Obviously their size is not something we have any chance against. They could have just tossed it down low and I think they'd have scored on every possession because they'd likely have gotten every rebound.

Reporter: Do you regret scheduling this game?

Tovarich: No. It's a chance for our players to play in a big time arena and atmosphere against a top-25 team. Hopefully that's something they'll remember fondly, regardless of the outcome.

Reporter: Are there any positives to take away?

Tovarich: Of course there are. We only turned the ball over once. That's obviously the first step to avoiding getting totally dominated. We didn't shoot well, but we got ourselves open here and there.

Reporter: Usually you take too many 3's, but this time it seemed like you tried to go down low too many times and many shots got blocked or were highly contested and were missed.

Tovarich: Well, when you're barely shooting 20% from 3, you may as well try something different. Maybe you get some fouls and go deeper in their bench? Gotta try something. We have severe limitations on what we can do, but you may as well try everything you can think of.

                  Reporter: Is Longwood a must-win?

Tovarich: Nothing's a must-win until the conference tournament, assuming we all get in. I'll have to look into that. It's a possible win, so you'd hope we can because I don't know how often we'll be able to say that.

Tovarich: Tough one to take. Had plenty of good chances in OT and the 3 rimmed out, or we gota layup blocked by the rim somehow. We even somehow stumbled our way into a couple offensive rebounds in OT there. Tough to keep the energy up in OT. That's not something we can make a regular thing with this lack of depth. Our margin for error is pretty slim so al the close shots had to go.

Reporter: Can this loss end up beating you twice?

Tovarich: We're not good enough to sit around and sulk all week until the next game. We're going to lose a lot. If we get beat twice, it's because we're not good enough to win twice.

Reporter: You shoot more 3's than 2's. Is that a sustainable plan for success?

Tovarich: I don't think we have a plan for success. We don't shoot down low well, so there's only so much of that I can watch. We can't get into track meets where we score in transition, so we're going to slow it down and work the ball around and if the 3's are what are open, that's what we'll do, but we are almost sort of competent from out there. Our big guys tend to be so out-matched that it's hard to feel confident in it too often.

Reporter: Your job security already seems to be slipping. Do you think you'll be one and done here?

Tovarich: I think we can do better than the 4-27 the last coach did, but I wouldn't be much surprised if I get axed before I can turn this around.

Tovarich: I feel for Binghamton coach, whoever he is. I'd never expect to shoot 14/26 on 3's again as long as I coach, and it took every one of them to eek it out there at the end. They shot incredibly too to stay in it. We're probably very fortunate to have won that.

Reporter: Have you changed anything to attempt to be better at rebounding?

Tovarich: We're gonna tell them to crash the boards a little more and definitely not focus on anything resembling a fast break. So maybe tweaking those instructions a little and really dwelling hard on the rebounding part. Physically, we are limited, so instruction and effort and emphasis is about all I can do.

Reporter: You've been virtually 100% man to man defense. Any thoughts to switching that up?

Tovarich: Given how everyone shoots from the outside, that wouldn't seem wise right now. Maybe next time we see a big team who are good down low and we can't do anything else to stop it, maybe we'll try some zone to clog the passing lane down low.

Reporter: Do you consider UMBC a rivalry even though they're in a different conference?

Tovarich: I haven't been here long enough to know who we're really into. When you're 4-27, worrying about who you call your rival doesn't seem so important. I guess it's an in-state game, but there are like 10 schools in Maryland? So it's hard to say they're all rivalries just based on whoever decided on the shape of the state 200+ years ago.

Tovarich: Hopefully they were just superhuman tonight. That's how it felt. Seemed like they couldn't miss. We couldn't make much. Big guys did a decent enough job accumulating some points. I lost count of the point-blank misses though. Must be their amazing defense.

Reporter: They were hitting most shots from the outside, but then you switched from man to zone anyway?

                        Tovarich: Yeah, so?

Reporter: That just leaves them wide open even more.

Tovarich: You know the definition of insanity...

                        Reporter: Are there any positives?

Tovarich: Yes. We're one game closer to this season being over.

Reporter: You have a conference game coming up. Can you turn it around before then?

Tovarich: Turn it around sounds simple huh? We just magically get better? We're not good. I got no one on my staff who can make these guys better. I am 100% focusing all my skills on recruiting because that's the most pressing need this program has. I don't know why there's a random conference game in December, but it was kind of annoying putting the schedule together with the rules. At least we're at home I guess. Maybe we'll just play bettter. Can't be much worse than tonight.

A little bit at the end. Tried some 1-3-1 first. That was a disaster. By the time the players even got into position, it seems like they were firing off shots and they were mostly going in. Even in man with a hand right in their face though, they didn't miss much. This bump up in difficulty is quite noticeable, but the results are more what they should be.

Yeah, that's tough. I haven't done a zone much in this game, but maybe a 3-2 or 1-2-2 would be OK?
