    Catch up AI?

I couldn't find a post about this. Am I the only one noticing ridiculous catch-up AI? Twice in a row now I have strung together a couple of strong innings and gone in to the 8th or 9th with a 7 run lead or so. And both times, the computer got hit after hit until they took a 1 run lead. In the first game they took a one run lead then immediately got the rest of their outs and I lost. The other game they walked off with a 2 run shot in the bottom of 9.

Anyone else seen this? Can it be controlled? Do sliders affect it?

yes I have as well it is a combo of 2 things in my opinion. One is rubber band logic so the computer never gets blown out, NFL Blitz was notorious for rubber band logic. The second thing i notice is the relievers are just not as effective to pitch with as the starters IMO. Often times your relievers are in 70's overall with poor composure so they get a hit and then get rattled. So IMO it is a combo of the 2.

there is no doubt, the comback ai is in effect..........i play with the yankees and was playing the royals, i scored 6 runs in the inning and sure enuff the royals come back at the bottom of the inning and score 6 off c.c......i mean this is sad for a next gen system to be playing like a ps1, i dont get it. if the ps3 and xbox360 are basically the same type next gen systems, then why does the show play that much better than mlb? i just dont get it.......

Yea really.. People are buying PSPs and PS3s just to play The Show, which speaks loud as hell. I bought a PSP for The Show and I play it more than 2K9. I don't even play 2K9 for the PC anymore, which is why my sliders are never updated anymore.

in my opinion its a user fault. i find that by the end of the game, and if im in a blowout, i am usually trying to finish the game quickly. that means i am just throwing strikes and not being real careful about pitch placement. add that to an overagressive ai, and it adds up to a few extra hits for the cpu team. next time you are in a blowout it the ninth, try to be patient and keep pitching like you are looking for a strikeout. i can easily go 1-2-3 in the ninth even in a blowout.

                  Re: Catch up AI?

I dunno...haven't seen it. Now to be fair, I've pretty much shelved this one and am spending the bulk of my time with "the other game."

Speaking of that game, there's no need to bring it up in this discussion (as in to again say that people are jumping over to it). We get it...2K9 disappoints people. In the comeback AI discussion, that's not relevant. I'd urge you to read that forum and see just how many LONG threads have been beaten to death on the topic of CPU comeback logic. Just saying that The Show is a separate discussion and has it's own set of conspiracies surrounding it...lol.

As for the comeback AI itself, I think that people will see this type of stuff the more they look for it. Meaning that if you go in with your expectations not met and the belief that the CPU has to manufacture difficulty, then you'll likely see it. After, it's all math. The CPU doesn't act on random...even it's random is programmed.

This means that there are always going to be things that seem scripted. You're more likely to notice them when it matters more (IE late-game/comeback scenarios). Not saying that's the only thing at play (or even that it's impossible for a game to have a CPU "cheat" or two built in), but from what I've seen the CPU gets no unusual boost near the end.

                    SoxFan,

i understand, and point taken. but to leave the issue alone or drop it? nah from what i hear the developers of this game check out the site, so i want them to know how i feel. i paid 59.99 for this game just like people who play the"other" game. but we as 360 users cant enjoy a real baseball game, with all flaws, it's needs to be put out there as much as possible to let VC know this is unacceptable. to pay this kind of money and then wait 3-4 weeks just so you cant get a decent game with a patch, while the "others" can play and enjoy the game right out of the box. i'm sure the "other" game has bugs, but nothin like this.....and as for the comeback ai, yeah your right it's just math and console just reads what is given, but this is advertised as real sim baseball... and all i see are comebacks game after game. cmon now that's not real-life. and maybe the "math" they did is wrong.......lol

                      Re: Catch up AI?

Why does every thread turn into a MLB 2k9 sucks and the Show is so much better thread. If you don't like the game STOP PLAYING IT and move on. I understand that some people are upset with the game okay I get it, it is your right to not like something and be upset but, it is just becoming too much.

Anyway back to the question, I have seen a little comeback mode even in close games. The last two games I have been up by 2 going into the 8th inning and boom tie game. It could be me keeping my starter in too long and fatigue takes effect.
                      Gaming hard since 1988

I have won like 25 Super Bowls in Madden so I am kinda a big deal.

lol...I don't disagree with any of those points. I wasn't comparing bug lists. The only point I made in regards to mentioning things, is there is no need to involve The Show in this discussion. It's about comeback AI in 2K baseball. You're right...math could possibly be screwed, I agree. The Show has nothing to do with it though. They have their own developers and their own math.

It seems that people have an apparent need to trot out The Show at every opportunity. I love the game, but I go to that forum to read about it. Now if there are comparisons for reference, fine. That doesn't apply here though.

I think the rubber band AI definitely exists.

I think its really the bottled gameplay that gets you beat. They come on with their gangbusters inning or two, and you are physically not able to get hits no matter what you do in most instances.... they will retire you for the last 6 outs no matter how well you appear to strike the ball

I'm sorry - this is the single most absurd myth in all of sports gaming. A loss is a loss and a win is a win. It's as true in sports gaming as it is in real sports. When I lose late, it's because I buckled under the pressue. When other people lose late, apparently, it's because the AI cheats.
