    Is Player Potential dynamic?

Say a rookie pitcher has a potential of a D, but he absolutely dominates. Will his potential ever change to match his performances? Can he get that upgraded to a C at any point?

Also, say a top prospect has an A potential, but he breaks his leg and misses the whole season. Will his potential then drop because he has been injured, or will he come back the next season with a huge boost to his overall simply because he has an "A" potential?

yes to both questions. A player's potential can increase or decline based on performance and training.

havent seen it happen, I know its not based on performance. Or else Jose Lopez wouldn't be decreasing 8 points a year in my framchise.

Ok, so is it or isn't it? We have two different answers.

I'll put it in perspective for ya. For example, if Jose Lopez has 550 at bats and his numbers in your franchise year 2010 are:

              .355 BA, 54 Homers, 136 Rbis, 117 runs scored,

He will decline in all categories because he is a "D" potential. It has nothing to do with how he performs just what his letter is in his potential box.

This is really disappointing. If a player has a phenomenal year, it should be automatic (or at least not programmed) that he either improve or at the least, stay the same. He should not break down and see his skills all diminish after having a great year.

I thought of this because like I stated in another thread, I dominate with Andruw Jones. But then I thought "Hey, if I happen to win an MVP award with Jones, will he actually start to improve his attributes a little and maybe return to form from 4-5 years ago?" But clearly this is not the case.

I wonder what Countryboy's reasoning for thinking it changes it. Everyone else has disputed this.

                  Re: Is Player Potential dynamic?

Yeah, I think one of the problems may be the abundance of made up players (especially starting pitchers), having "A" potentials. Knights rosters will fix this/repair this though I think.

But with the default rosters, say you are the Rays for example,

If you have a made up SP who is an "A" potential and, say he is the 11th best overall SP in your system.

Say he has a bad season in AA, and goes 7-15 with an era of 6.56.

In most cases he will improve on all categories for no reason at all just cause he's an "A" potential.

Before you know it, over time, he has a chance to be better overall than Wade Davis. Not good.

                    Re: Is Player Potential dynamic?

The dynamic potential is subtle, not radical.

A person may stay a "B" potential, but may move in the B-spectrum (how can you tell, sort it out and check his potential scouting report, low-B (decent player, could get better) has their own line while a high-B has it's own line (such as "solid player, could be a star".

You shouldn't expect a "D" potential player to all-of-sudden jump to an A because he hit .330, 40, 130. We've seen many fluke seasons (However, Jose Lopez is not a D-potential player and I believe I suggested that he should be a B).

I agree with your bottom paragraph to an extent. A "D" potential should not jump up to an "A" potential cause of one good year, but,

He should indeed go to a "B" potential if he hit .330, 40, 130. If that's not the case, then there's a problem. Those types of seasons don't grow on trees, and any team would KILL for that type of year from a player.

Perfect example, Kendry Morales 2009 (.306 BA, 34 hrs, 108 rbi). You want to talk about out of nowhere! Rags to riches.

Entering 2010, I would have him as a "B" potential cause it was so unexpected. But if he has an identical year in 2010 as he did in 2009, I would indeed bump him up to a "A" potential.

because Knight, who attended community day and I'm sure was told by the dev team, said that training and performance both effect a player's potential rating change.

                          Re: Is Player Potential dynamic?

Gotta keep this short...I'm at work.
                          1. Player potential is indeed dynamic. Like I said before...it is NOT all over the place. Having a good year is not a lock for jumping 1 or 2 letters in potential.
You will see certain indicators for guys who might make a jump or slide down(both can happen)
First, you get the e-mail saying so and so it having a great(poor) time in the minors.
The second indicator is another e-mail saying "keep and eye on so and so....he's might be better than we thought"..or..."so and so may not be the player we thought he was".
This can happen to any player.

Part two....a potential letter DOES NOT guarantee a gain or loss any longer. Training is key in this area....as well as performance.
A potentials will usually still gain...and big...but it varies much more this year with amount of gain.
                          B's might gain....but I've seen B's lose ground as well(and keep their B potential)
                          C's....I've seen gain...lose..and a mix of both(B's also)
I've even seen D's GAIN points this year in test seasons..
All gave some. Some gave all. 343

                            .....coninued...
So you really have to keep an eye on your players this year.
These gains/losses all happen AFTER season(not the ones you see in season)....
Sim a season....go through the teams player progression and you'll get an idea of what's REALLY going on.

The developers said that potential is dynamic this year. I have only simmed a few seasons, but if a player does well the potential rating does increase and vice versa.

You have to be very careful here on OS. Half of the posters will continuously type and type and they have no idea what they are talking about. The Show forum usually avoids this, but once the game comes out there are a lot of misinformed threads. Simply listen to the developers and the old timers and they will lead you in the right direction.
