Considering the Switch: MLB The Show Questions

My 360 recently died, and instead of investing a $100-$150 to get it fixed, I'm seriously considering switching to a PS3. My primary reason? MLB The Show. I'm a baseball junkie, and while I've liked the other game's progress, I've loved the show since the days of the PS2.

I mainly play offline franchise, butbefore I go investing in a PS3, I have a few questions regarding The Show's franchise mode.

Please keep in mind: I have not played MLB The Show on this generation of consoles. The last one I owned/played was (IIRC) MLB The Show 06.

1. Is the franchise mode the same as in years past? Do you still need to generate revenue via concessions, parking, seats, etc.?
2. Are you still responsible for upgrading and maintaining the field, training room, etc.?
3. Is marketing still an expense? Does it impact attendance?
4. Do you determine budget spent on training. e.g. speed, contact, power, catching, throwing power, etc.?
5. Do you still hire and fire coaches and manager? Do they actually impact the performance and development of the players?
6. Do scouts provide accurate reports? Does a scout's salary indicate his ability to find talent?
7. How deep is the minor league system?
8. How is the player progression?

I know these are basic questions, but as I mentioned: I haven't played The Show since the 06 iteration on the PS2. I'm willing to bet that I wouldn't be disappointed in the 2012 version, but I'dd like to have a few more definitive answers before investing $$$ in a PS3.

2) Yes
3) It's an expense (I think), but I'm not sure how much it affects attendance.
4) You set training schedules for all your positions, but I don't believe it affects your budget in any way.
5) Yes and Yes
6) I've never actually looked in to what the scouts say. You get emails about when they have finished scouting a certain player, but I've never gone any further with it.
7) AAA, AA are playable. A-ball is just to keep extra players and draft picks.
8) Pretty good I guess. The thing that bothers me is it seems a player POTENTIAL dictates everything. Players with A potentials will improve dramatically, but if a D potential player has a great season, he won't see an improvement, and depending on his ratings, he could see a decline.

That's the sole reason I switched from 360 to PS3. Im one of the few PS3 owners that admits the 360 is a superior product. But TheShow tips the scales back to PS3 in a major way!

Yep. That's honestly my thinking.

As for being able to only play AAA and AA, I'm ok with that. I won't be playing any minor league games. In fact, I'll simulate most of my major league games.

1,2,3 yes to all but regardless of income or attendance the only way to increase player payroll is to make the playoffs and then it is only a minor increase. Renders the whole point of improving attendance worthless since you can't spend the money on players.

4. There is no budget for training, you are allowed a limited number of training categories to assign. Training impacts player progression and is assigned to each position, not individual players. One aspect of training involving progression of individual pitches remains broken.

5. You hire and fire coaches and scouts. Coaches have attributes which impact team performance.

6. Scouts can scout more players if you employ the more expensive scouts.

7. Minor leagues are limited to AAA and AA teams which are playable, A isn't really a team, just a storage area for extra players.

8. Player progression IMO is fine. It is based on player's potential rating and how you train that player, or more accurately how you train a position.


This is the best baseball game I've played but I play franchise and manage mode and there are issues which are neglected year after year. In manage mode the cpu takes over for the human player at times and can't be over ridden. In franchise you can't carry over your mlb '11 franchise to the mlb'12 version. If you play that mode you are essentially getting the new version of the game for more animations.

The game on ps3 is far better looking than ps2.

For what it's worth, I shelled out $300.00 last March for a PS3 just for "The Show" and it was the best investment I ever made entertainment wise. Playing the thing everyday the last 10 months, that's how good it gets.

These questions are insignificant. I was in your shoes some years back. I got the PS3 for the Show and have not turned back. Then I found out I could play a bunch of other games on the PS3 plus 3D movies and Blu Ray.

Get the PS3 and the SHow....if you are disappointed send me a PM and I will send you your money back...and I am not kidding. I GUARANDAMNTEE you will be overjoyed.

mlb 2k doesn't even touch the show. i've played both extensively and 2k feels too arcadey imo. if you're a baseball junkie you will LOVE the show. it has dramatically improved since 06. i'm not trying to sell you on this game, it's just that good of a game.

'11 was good, but the show '12 is going to be amazing.

mlb 2k doesn't even touch the show. i've played both extensively and 2k feels too arcadey imo. if you're a baseball junkie you will LOVE the show. it has dramatically improved since 06. i'm not trying to sell you on this game, it's just that good of a game.

'11 was good, but the show '12 is going to be amazing.

I don't have a recent frame of reference, so even if it's a fraction of how fun the PS2 games were, I should be ok.

It's the extra $100-$150 I'm concerned about. I'm married with four kids, who spend most of the time on the Wii. So I won't play a whole lot.

Of course the Blu Ray is an added bonus, but I already own a Blu Ray player.

Check on the trade-in credit values on all your XBox stuff, since you wouldn't be needing it anymore. Should be able to shave some $$ off the sticker price.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've been humming and hawing about buying a PS3 just for The Show for three years. But now that MaverickReturns is offering a money-back guarantee, I have no reason NOT to pull the trigger now!

I own a Playstation 3 just for MLB: The Show. I own about 55 Xbox games and 4 PS3 games. MLB: 08, MLB: 09, MLB: 10, MLB: 11, and soon MLB: 12. So basically, if you're a baseball fan MLB: The Show is a must.

I bought a copy of MLB11 the Show 2 months before ( Sept 2011 ) in preparation of getting a PS3 for my birthday ( Nov 2011 ) of which I did get a PS3 320 bundle for Uncharted 3. The only reason that I wanted a PS3 is for the Show and as a lifetime baseball fan and a 360 owner I could only watch from a far and covet the awesomeness of this game. Now I have it readily at my hands to enjoy at anytime, do your self a favor and don't wait to get it you will never look back or have a want for any other baseball game.
