My 3 years in Review of MLB The Show 15

So I have just finished up year three of my Nationals franchise and I have come to several conclusions. I would like to point out that this review is just my opinion.

Over the course of over 500 games, I finally feel like I can put my thoughts into a review.

MLB 15 the show does a lot of things right. The stadiums look beautiful and the lighting has never been better. While some people don't like the player models I for one think they are outstanding. They uniforms look nice and the overall gameplay has seen some improvements.

However I don't think that all is not right in Camelot.

The commentating is definitely showing its age and has become truly annoying. I remember in one blow out where I was down 9-0 and has just given up back to back home runs, I finally got one across the plate barely hitting the corner, "That's what makes him so dangerous is his ability to paint the corners". Really its the 3rd inning and I am at 70+ pitches and that's what makes me dangerous? Just bad.

Fielding has seen some definite upgrades. Players take better and worse routes to the ball, this all makes it a little more realistic in the field. But the animations hold the advances back. While I am not going to say the animations are bad they are behind the advances. Way to many errors can be traced to animations or even plays not even tried on the ball. I tracked all of my fielding errors and looked at replays. A great majority of errors were caused by the fielders gloves not even being open to make the catch thus causing the ball to bounce of his glove. Fielding rating or glitch I don't know and I am not getting in to that.

Pitching has really seen some work. The new pitches and animations really add a lot to the atmosphere. It is nice to see realistic breaks and spins on the ball. Really adds to the hitting as well. But they have removed the cat mouse game of getting the runners on base. The chance of picking someone off is so remote and anything but a casual throw lead to the ball sailing into the stands with disturbing regularity. Runners do not take leads and even the slowest runner usually has no problems getting a base. Throwing over and the new slide step can cut down on the attempts at stealing but does not seem to have a whole lot of factor on the success. Add to the equation that the Pitchers stamina in the play offs is completely hosed. This directly lead to me getting eliminated from the play offs twice.

Hitting has seen some advances as well. The new Directional hitting interface is a nice addition. Having a new mechanic for stat based hitting, to me , is a great idea. However they once again removed elements for every advance. Pure analog hitting has been basically cut in half. No longer needing to pull back and then move forward, except for a power swing, has really taken my interest away from this mechanic.

    So......

All in all I think MLB 15 is a good game. I obviously enjoyed it, I played 3 complete seasons. But for me too many things were taken away or in my opinion overlooked entirely for this to be considered a great game. For the first time ever I am ready to shelve this. I am just tired of fighting a game to be good. I have gone back to 14 as I feel the gameplay is more polished and more to my liking. Not to mention I can go to the play offs without fear of the game taking away my chance to win. MLB 15 is definitely the prettier game but I don't think its the greatest.

I would give this game a solid 7 out of 10. I will still buy next year, most likely. But I also think I will wait and see what has been changed or taken away next year before doing so.

Re: My 3 years in Review of MLB The Show 15

I have my own quibbles about lighting, player models, and ball physics. I still think some of these facets keep them above most sports games (specifically most MLB games, but there isn't much competition recently), however I think most has stayed "essentially the same" for about ten years now. They've made their upgrades, but they haven't made their overhauls. Some things are well past due, and are of the only things on my yearly wish lists time to time.

Thankfully, most decisions made for this game don't go against my views on how they should be delivered. Those instances are very few and far between, and some things that are often deal breakers in other games for me are included just as an option in this game, so things settle pretty well.

They've made great strides along the way jumping in with a new feature even if not fully-fledged out, and developing a multi-year plan to continue building on it. In essence, no version of this game is ever "complete," but it seems to be getting its 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 face lifts that keep it breathing just enough new air every year in and out. I think the attention to detail provided by the development community helps iron those kinds of things out.

I'm not one of the people who says something like, "These guys make a great game already, so surely they could do an NFL or NHL game as well!" It doesn't quite always work that way. I think they are good at doing baseball and that it is a different kind of game to develop for than the other games. I also believe the resources would be shifted far too much to make multiple games a year very compelling, and that starting from scratch in these other sports would bring their baseball title down tremendously. Their focus is narrow, and it should stay that way. Good for them.

At some point though, some changes need to be made just for the sake of it. Brand name and presentation package, commentary team, PA announcer, some of the sound effects, hell even the font in the menus. There will also always be an argument for a better ratings system, editing program and slider set. I just think that as long as they keep striking the balance between MLB likeness/authenticity and video game play appeal, they'll keep getting my money. Though in time, there will have to be a few more creative opinions jumping in to keep that freshness intact.

I love the game, but it might only be because I love baseball. That's not a bad thing, but at the same time there are other little baseball nuances that I feel this franchise needs to implement. The first thing that needs to be acknowledged is that this game is far from perfect, which is not at all a knock to the wonderful development team of SCE San Diego. I feel Bullit's 7.5/10 is warranted, and I still feel that competition breeds more excellence than any fantastic development team could. Gosh, I miss 2K, MVP, ASB and HH... but I'm glad that The Show was the one that outlasted them all.

How are you going back to '14? What rosters are you using? Didn't that have its own nuances - was it '13 or '14 that the runner would slow rounding 3rd? I'm just curious to hear more...

I still have my Nationals franchise that I never carried over because I did not want to be forced into the Manager contracts. So I am going to continue that. Sure every game has its " quirks" but at least in '14 I can pitch in the post season without worrying about stamina, I can pick off runners with my pitcher and I can use full analog controls. Anything else pops up I will let you know. But I am ending year 2 with this franchise and I don't remember any big issues.

I had bought 14 digitally so I just re downloaded it. Even if I want to start over I never deleted my files off the hard drive. So I still have OSFM Opening Day and all of the Historical Seasons still on my HD.

There are many "little things" I would like to see changed, put back in, or refined in this game. MLB 14 is a good game, you really can't go wrong with either one. I really think that the carry over saves from one year to the next release is a feature that keeps this game refreshing.

I will say this Bullit. I've played Madden 15 (don't count the 16 versions), NBA 2K 15, NHL 15, FIFA 15, and PES 15 and The Show was tighter than any of them. 2K arguably has the best all around gameplay, but the number of updates that Take Two did has you changing the sliders a number of times which, can be frustrating.

I look at this game as a blessing and a standard that other developers should match in simulation and "Total Control." Don't get me wrong, I want more, but this grass is greener than the others.

I am not disagreeing with you. I agree that The Show 15 is good game and probably better than those you listed. I played the hell out of 15. I am just saying its not a "great" game. I am just happier with 14. In no way should my post be taken as a bash on 15, the developers or anybody who loves it. Heck I love it! But after 500 some odd games I am tired of it and going back to 14 that I still enjoy. That's all, really.

I needed a legitimate baseball fix so I popped in '14. Not as glamourous in presentation as 15 but I actually played a game without incompetent 1st baseman, wall-hugging outfielders, 3rd baseman fielding grounders and not running to the stands before throwing the ball to a 1st baseman who wouldn't be covering anyway.

Not giving up on 15 or saying 14 is the better game, but as far as next year for the trade in, if I decide that route, it'll be 15. I'm looking at '14 as being old reliable. May not look pretty on the outside but at least there are no surprises.[/QUOTE]

I agree with you totally and posted my sentiments on 6-30. Sadly my opinion has not changed.

The saddest part is that for all the strides they made, 14 is still a far more realistic baseball representation than 15.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but I can't see myself going back to 14. I still really really enjoy this game.

2 things you said stuck out I want to extra-agree with, if you will.

                          Commentary. My lord.

Pitcher stamina in postseason. 4 days rest and starters still have about a full quarter+ energy missing.

I don't know - I've seen a lot of of the same things talked about in 15 in MLB14 as well.

Wall-hugging OFers, animations leading to messed up plays, fielders (and maybe players in general) being too fast leading to too many plays that shouldn't happen (infield hits, mediocre fielders tracking down balls in tough to defend zones, etc)

To me, the biggest change to from 14 to 15 was carryover saves and fielders taking different routes to balls based on ratings.

Otherwise, the same issues seem to present in both - and seem to get brought up every year because they are there.

Bullit, you're post/review was very well written and thought out. Being in my 3rd season though, I'm not sure that I could go back to '14, in fact I know I couldn't. To me, the defense is far better in '15 than it was last year. Sure some of the same issues still exist (of'ers hugging wall) but I feel as though I have more control in making that not happen by simply letting go of the L-Stick when the fielder goes into his animation.

There are things that I preferred in '14 over '15 (no quick access to pitcher/batter analysis during game, no quick view of pitcher stats during game, and the lead offs) but those I can overlook due to the other factors I find superior in this game over last.
