Re: Game way too dark in HDR game mode

When did the C7 release? I want to say I bought that very TV, rushed with it and the first thing I did was hook everything up and fire up my PS4 Pro and The Show. I couldn't believe how dark everything was. Not long after I brought this TV back and swapped it for a Sony X930E, since it had much higher HDR peak brightness. And yea, it was a major difference in brightness, I could actually see lol.

I now have a CX, and HDR is much better. But even still, not that I'm an expert or anything, but even with this amazing TV, I feel like HDR differs on a game to game basis. Some games, like The Show, still look a little too dark for me.

There is a “workaround” by changing the name of the PS5 HDMI port on the TV to PC which brings back the great colours and contrast that you would expect from HDR but you get massive banding in the sky:

Apparently the new HDMI 2.1 port fixes this but the C7 only has 2.0. So basically a high end tv of $1500 of 3 years old is already outdated [emoji2373]
HDMI 2.0 cannot handle 4k 60hrz without colour compression. That would explain your issues. In order to solve it, you either need to force a lower resolution out of the PS5 or cap the framerate at 30. If the PS5 is like the PS4, there will be an option in the system settings where you can force a 1080p. Unfortunately, there is no 1440p option (at least with the PS4 pro), which IMO is the sweet spot for gaming.

Its weird because I have zero issues on my lg c7 with ps5 and the show. I did have issues on a different lg non oled tv though on ps4 pro.

Re: Game way too dark in HDR game mode

Are you guys adjusting tv settings first like picture settings, then game settings?

In picture settings I highly recommend not turning HDR on there, but only within the game itself under the game options then under audio video. Then don't forget to go under PS4/PS5 settings and do the HDR setup.

Now back to your TV picture settings if you have back light on your TV then set it to 40 or 50 range.

Try putting your model of your TV then darko TV calibration on YouTube and see if he did your TV the guys very good at what he does.

          I hope this helps.

Re: Game way too dark in HDR game mode

With my older TV (a 60" Samsung LED I bought around 2010), the screen was very bright, and I never had any issues with the HDR settings in any of my PS4 games. Simple adjustments, either with the TV or the game, solved everything very easily. I absolutely loved it, both for TV and gaming.

Sadly, that one died a little over a year ago and I replaced it with a 4K LG LED of the same size, and have been extremely frustrated at how dark the picture tends to be, no matter what I do when the HDR is turned on. I've been able to make adjustments for watching TV, but the PS4 was a lot more trouble to figure out. What I ended up doing was turning off the HDR features for both the TV and the console all together, and this has made most of the games playable.

Before, some non sports games were so dark that I couldn't even see what was happening, especially in shadows, and The Show and Madden looked like I was using my laptop with the power cord unplugged, and it was in battery saver mode with the screen really dim and yellow. Turning off HRD apparently robs me of some of the highest end picture quality, but if I can't even see the screen, then what's the point!
Anyone who claims to be a fan of two teams in the same pro sport is actually a fan of none.

Ok so I got myself the LG Oled CX and man what a difference compared to the C7.

I think because most Oled screens peak around 700/800 nits max HDR is always darker on Oled’s compared to LCD or Qled that can go above 1000nits. However with dynamic tone mapping and the improved HDR game mode on the CX I’m satisfied.

Because HDR is so different on each tv and such a mess of a “standard” I think SDS had it right with the introduction of an HDR slider. Maybe they should bring it back.

Having said that I think The Show handles HDR far worse than other games. Call of Duty Cold War and Days Gone look insanely good.

I think SDS developes this game on 1000+ nits sony tv’s. I wish we knew which model so we could ask someone with that exact tv how it looks.

Maybe with his TV due to being around 700 nits. I have no issues with mine, which sits about 1000 nits. Mine is in 4K 60hz and looks amazing in HDR.

And as was stated, it's also a problem with the game itself. The game just doesn't do a good job with some TV's even though those same TV's look great in other games.

This is all such a Croc, not anyone's posts but just the fact we have to troubleshoot this rubbish from tv to tv. God forbid people be able to just buy an expensive TV and have nothing to worry about

I don't know if this has to do with HDR or what, but I've been playing at Minute Maid a couple games and noticed that with the roof closed, the lighting is just awful for day games. I remember a few years ago, they had it right. What I mean, is that shadows from the roof closed are just not there. It's like playing in the Trop. During day games between 4-6, there should be shadows in right field from the retractable roof.

I've said before that for whatever reason, the overall visual quality of the game in that regard has dipped in recent years. (lighting, shadows, weather, ect) It seemed to peak in the middle of the PS4 generations lifespan, and then come back down a few years ago.

Does this line up with the start of the 4K era? Or something with regard to the standard PS4 vs the PS4 Pro? I still have a regular PS4 that I bought back in 2014 that I play all of my games on, and to me, it seems like the last few editions have been a little worse in these regards than their predecessors.

Ok I’m pretty satisfied with the image I’m getting on the CX now.

Now I’m curious to see if they touched the lighting engine for 21.

CX owner here, too. Looking forward to my first show on an OLED this year. First TV with HDR, as a matter of fact. Pretty stoked.
