    Tips for a Show Noob

Hi all. I'm a long time Xbox user who has been waiting for this game since MLB 2k12. I'm a veteran Madden user in both online and offline franchise and I know over there we've developed some "house rules" to limit the ability to take advantage of the CPU, specifically in offline franchises. I'm looking for some tips from you Show veterans on a few things like that in the baseball world. I'm a huge baseball fan IRL so I have a very good idea on what's "sim" and what's not but wanted to know what the baseball community has found. My intention is to play solely offline franchise for the time being so any tips you can offer would be great.

A few specific questions I have are:

    1. how long does a standard 9 inning game take?

    2. my intention is to play 162 game seasons. how do you all accomplish this without burnout? my initial thought is playing roughly half of the games and simming the other half so that I can get through a few seasons at least. does anyone have any other ideas?

    3. any "house rules" for team building you recommend? for example in madden I limited myself to only signing 3 players per season 75ovr and higher. the rest would have to at least hit the open free agent market

this post has gotten long already so I'll stop here but any tips you all have would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Re: Tips for a Show Noob

Ive played every version of The Show since 06 on PS2. I’m not sure what year they introduced it, but there’s a way to play through each game with something called Quick Counts enabled. Basically, whether you’re batting or pitching/playing the field, whenever a new batter comes to the plate there’s already a randomly generated count. It could be 1-1, 1-2. 3-1, etc.

Before this, I probably never came close to even finishing a season. But with Quick Counts, you can almost finish an entire series in the time it would take you to finish a single game without using Quick Counts.

So unless you definitely want to play every single pitch of every single game, I recommend checking this out. It’s added so much value to the game for me, to the point where I play the Show year round, even during real-life baseball’s offseason. I play Madden and 2K as well, but this new way of playing the Show just keeps it fresh and fun for me.

          1. It usually takes 45 to 55 minutes. This is the vast majority of games, if you play every pitch of every inning with braodcast on and skipping some of the cutscenes. You have a lot of options to help you speed up the game though. Seriously, there are a ton, too many to get into here.

          2. I play the Show year round. I binge and fast on it, but I'll play over the holidays just as easily as in the heat of summer. I usually get through about 162 in that time, sometimes more, rarely less.. Year to year saves helped immensely, since I never worried about "getting through" multiple seasons. My current Ace is someone I drafted in real life 2014. It's kind of crazy. Unfortunately, year to year saves aren't in this upcoming version, and there is no news on if it's coming back ever.

I also use save and quite a lot, which is a feature that allows you to save midgame. I'm currently starting the 2nd inning of a game with the Rays up 1-0 against me, even though I haven't played today. It also helps answer your third question...

          3. I've only got 1 house rule that really matters. Whatever happens on the field, happened. #9 hitter hits a grand slam against me in the 9th to tie the game? It happened. My top rated defensive team commits 16 errors in a playoff game? It happened. The game bugs out and my pitcher is out for the season with a cracked skull, even though the ball was a soft fowl? It happened. It prevents me from deleting a frustrating game, and also makes up for a few things missing in the game (for example, MLB does not allow SDS to show fights, and ejections are not a thing in this game for the same reason. SDS would lose the rights if they disobeyed).

Save and quit allows me to walk away from a frustrating game without breaking my house rule. They're going to happen. Trust me.

Also going to dump these threads here. For the slider thread I'm showing: I don't recommend using the slider settings. I don't have any hands on with 21 and even if 21 were exactly the same, it's still not a great set for a new player. However, if sliders work the same as they do in 20, it'll help guide you in case your want to take your own crack at sliders, as I try to break down each slider and its effect.

You are in for a treat. On the field, this game is second to none.
