2K/EA are having internal discussions on return of College Basketball games.

I think this is awesome. CFB25 blew through all expectations and is now the best selling sports game of all time. I'm sure it will sell less in the coming years. But still, EACFB it is a major release now and just "Maddens little brother" anymore.

The thing I like about EACFB is that it plays like Madden but is more loose, a bit more arcade and just more fun to pick up and play. It's not trying to mimic the NFL. I haven't touched Madden in months, but when I want that football fix CFB 25 hits it for me.

I'd love to see College Hoops return as just a throwback to simpler 2Ks with some modern touches. NBA 2K is what it is. I feel like if you married College Hoops 2K8 with NBA 2K14 next gen it could be something special. I just think people want something different even if it isn't necessarily better or perfect.

What would you modern NBA 2K heads like to see out of another basketball game that a College Hoops could embody?

I hope both companies can get the license=better product
But if 2k loses out on this like they did football
2k is in trouble it's like they can never compete with EA when its time to negotiate fighting for the license

2k had a opportunity to persuade college football when it wasn't exclusive for 10 years by building a relationship so when it's time to negotiate they would have a better chance but it's obvious their heart is not in football at all
They only interested in basketball games because it's their bread in butter 🤷

You think they only worried about college football if EA get the college basketball license it's gonna be hard for NBA 2k to keep a high sale
Not with 3 different options college/ football, basketball and NFL sheesh👀👀👀👀👀🤦

Hardcore basketball fans would definitely love a new college basketball game, but I don’t think it would be as big of a hit as CFB 25. Men’s college basketball just doesn’t have the same hype it did back when those games were a thing. A big part of that is the 'one-and-done' rule, players leave so quickly that it’s hard to market big stars the way college football can. That’s actually one of the reasons women’s college basketball is doing so well right now. Its top players stick around for 2-4 years, which gives fans time to really follow them. I think the game would sell well at first, but I could see interest dropping off pretty quickly after that.

As a gamer I just appreciate the variety. I didn't even realize it until just now. I don't need the games to be made by different companies. Just provide a different enough experience and I am good.

I think 2K is fine either way. It just makes more sense for them to be the first to wade back into the college basketball game market, the same as EA with football. Why let another company reap the benefits of "not being 2K" when you can do it yourself.

True. I never in a million years would have thought a College football game would outsell an NBA and NFL game. I think we have to look at it more through the lense of it being a video game and not just about college basketball. Would a College Hoops game that sells 2-3 million copies be a financial success? IDK. But I wonder how much Top Spin and 2K Golf sells and whether or not there is more potential with basketball.

How about 2K/EA come together in solidarity and unity and create the greatest sports video game ever made.

Of course College Football was going to sell like crazy. It's a nostalgia novelty game that hasn't been available for an entire generation of kids. College Basketball will be the same thing.

The 1st year it comes back it's going to be nuts. This is the time to do it too with all the hype around this year's draft class and next year's.

Re: 2K/EA are having internal discussions on return of College Basketball games.

In the end, whoever makes a college basketball game, they would likely need to sell 700k-1M copies to be very successful.

There is no way a college basketball game would sell like CF25, but it is also much cheaper to license. There are half the players and even though there are triple the schools, the licensing for the schools would be tiered and may even be set up for a profit-sharing situation dependent on sales of the game.

I also think 2K is better positioned because I do think they will want to monetize the MyPlayer from college into the NBA and they'll likely take a similar approach to EA with an "MVP" bundle of sorts.

Part of that is because college football is huge in the US AND it was the first game back after 11 years. I’m curious to see what sales look like next year.

They won’t be as good as this year but their long term vision would have that built in. easier to sell less than 5m+ copies in year two v. Selling less than 1.5m which was their original target

Let's not forget 2k was the first to drop out of college games (bars) because of low sales

I would just hope that if 2k gets the rights to it, they would give the games enough of a different feel in the same vein as CFB and Madden this year.

2k would have a much cheaper development cycle. EA would probably need to sell more for it to be worth it.

NBA 2k has a tested engine that they would just tweak to be college accurate. They've already kind of done it with the MyPlayer stories over the years. The only thing 2k would really be paying for is licensing and development of a franchise mode and the 'we just want to steal your money' modes.

EA would have to develop an entirely new game engine and sell potential customers on that engine (or at least they should given the catastrophe that was the final years of NBA Live). They would also have to build a lot more from scratch.

If they make it with the classic teams and have them play like they did then I think it would be a hit.
