What is the "trick" to shooting?

Playing online, I am fairly decent although my record isn't too good. I get a lot of wide open looks but can't shoot because of the dreaded shot meter, however, my opponent will never miss, it's like they're playing 2K12.

What is the trick to shooting? I know there has to be one ...

My honest opinion... Turn off the shot meter and focus on each players release. This may be weird but I focus on their feet and wrist to help time each players shot. You can argue that the shot meter is nothing more than a gimmick. Enjoy!

ignore the meter, shoot at the apex of your jump. Use the feed back to let you know if you were early or late, and just learn the release that way. focusing on the meter takes your eye of closing defenders and what not.

I agree. Online, ignore the meter. Learn the rhythm of the shot.

+1 on turning the meter off. Don't have time to look at the feet of my player when I shoot. Not sure who thought this implementation was a good idea.

I agree. But at least it's toggle-able. I liked last year's shot mechanic better though. A bigger range of "excellent release". It didn't always go in but at least I got to enjoy watching MP'S beautiful jumper I selected.

This was the best advice. I get a ton of excellent releases now, especially with my favorite player Deron Williams. It's amazing how much better it is not having that meter and instead watching the form.
