Ok guys, I'm not very familiar with how the caps work in the NBA. Can someone please explain them?

The reason I ask is in my Pacers franchise, C.J. Miles is lost for 2-4 months with a Torn Meniscus and I need someone who can come in off the bench and score. I was wanting to sign Ray Allen. He is asking for nearly $4M a year and I am over the Salary Cap but have like $23M free in hard cap space. Can I sign him?

Short answer is no, because you are over the Salary Cap.

The Salary Cap is how much salary a team is permitted to spend on it's roster. Once the cap is reached, no 'new' salary can be added. However, the Hard Cap exists so that teams can resign their own free agents that would otherwise take them over the salary cap. The Hard Cap is therefore the maximum salary a team can have at any time.

I think you should be able to, I was playing as the Warriors and I know they are over the regular cap and I signed Andrew Bynum to be the backup post player and I offered him like 3.23M and a team option on the end of it for the same amount.

Short answer is no, because you are over the Salary Cap.

The Salary Cap is how much salary a team is permitted to spend on it's roster. Once the cap is reached, no 'new' salary can be added. However, the Hard Cap exists so that teams can resign their own free agents that would otherwise take them over the salary cap. I think you can go over it, because I was over the cap and signed Bynum. The Warriors are about 10 million OVER the cap and I still signed Bynum, so as long as you have the roster spot you can sign him.

Ok here is your answer. If you are already over the salary cap, teams are given what is called a MLE or Mid Level Exception of about $5 million per year to sign free agents. You should be able to sign him given you have not already used it.

You can always sign a player to the minimum salary, even if you're over the cap. You can also spend up to 5MM if you're over the cap (called the mid-level exception). That's why they were able to sign Bynum for 3MM. Once you go over the 5MM, you have to sign players at the league minimum.

The cavs traded for Mozgov in real life for two draft picks right? Now in the game you are not allowed this kind of trade are you? What are the rules when doing trades when each team is over the cap?

When both teams have exceeded the salary cap and trade players, the Salaries must match up. In the game there is no way to pay for the difference or include a trade exception so you must match the salaries with 20% of total value.

For example.

Boston trades player x whos salary is $20M.

They must receive about $20M in contracts coming the other way

Boston receives players X ($12M), Y ($4M), and Z ($4M)

And Indiana receives player M ($20M)

Hopefully I didn't butcher that explanation too horribly

Please help guys. I can't find a good answer to these questions anywhere.

Question 1:
I have recently started playing MyGM with the Cavaliers and are thinking about which players I should extend. Since the player and team option salaries of a players contract doesn't seem to be counted in the total salary of next year, it shows that i have about 43m in cap space for 2015/2016. Let's say I extend Thompson's and Varejao's contracts, one more year, for (hypothetically) 5m each. Would Lebron and Love still be able to exercize their player options even though this would put me above the salary cap or will the game tell me that this isn't possible.

This should be possible, right? And does anyone know why 2k decided to not count salaries of option years in the total salary.

Question 2:
If I, for example, have 10m left in cap space and want to extend a player to whom I have bird rights. Is there then a reason for me to extend him using the bird rights (bird contract type) or is that just stupid.

Let's say i extend him using the "bird contract type" for 8m, even though I'll still be under the cap after the extension. Can I then sign a free agent to a 10m contract because the extension i made with the first player were made under using a bird-contract, which would allow me to exceed the cap if i did it the other way around? Or are the bird contracts only usefull when u actually exceed the cap with that particular extension.

I hope someone can help me with this. Just tell me if you don't get what i mean. I had a hard time coming up with how I would explain this.

Mozgov was traded for 5.2M trade exception. Trade exceptions aren't in NBA 2K which is why the deal can't be made in game.

Long story short: Philly absorbed the contract of Keith Bogans in a trade. Because they didn't send back any salary a trade exception worth the value of Bogans' contract (5.2M) is created, which went to Cleveland.

Trade exceptions are why LeBron was sign/traded to the Heat instead of just signing. Cleveland received a large trade exception (around 16M), which the Cavs could then use in a future trade (within the calendar year). This system is in place to prevent teams from losing all value in these situations.

I really hope trade exceptions are included in 2k16, as well as protected picks.

That adds so much to the negotiation process, though we'd want to make sure the AI could manage it.
