    2K still rocks...

I've been able to play NHL20 on my PS4 for the last few weeks. Interesting, some decent play, nice puck control moves. And then the same EA NHL thing happened to me after a few games in a season...

    it's so.....freaking.....boring.....

I just haven't cared to go back. I don't know what it is about NHL character models, same thing in Madden. They're like zombies. They're dead inside. I play NFL2K5 and NHL2K-anything and the player models are designed to actually.. emote. To breathe. To look like players that are energetic. I don't know what it is. Even in its limited animation quality. The atmosphere that EA tries to create just by cranking up the volume is done by NHL2K6 even just by designing their audio and sound effects well.

Plus, for single season people like me, 2K10 has the weekly team ratings, the stats leaders, news items, 3 stars, etc etc... The only thing I wish it had was an all-star game to try to get into. But wow, what a totally different experience from even NHL20. I'll admit, 2K8 is similarly lifeless as well particularly in the sound design and at that point the commentary was getting old. But still, so much fun stats stuff to look at during a season in 2K8 and, I mean, did a hockey game ever have more intuitive controls?

Anyway, just a perspective. Thank you to all of you that keep 2K games alive by doing rosters. Don't forget to check my roster updates thread for the latest ones available for each game. I try to keep them up to date.

    Re: 2K still rocks...

I agree, tbh I have 2K8 (after debating long and hard between 2K8 and 2K10 and alot of respected members on these boards telling me 2K8 is better).

The gameplay feels fun, it's not a grind. It gives me the feeling of when I play PES (and I'm not even a soccer fan), the gameplay itself is so fluid and rewarding, you feel good whether you win or lose.

I'm working on my 1993-1994 NHL rosters for 2K8 and can't wait to start a franchise with them.

If I find 2K10 for cheap, I might buy that too but I still need to spend some time in 2K8 first. BTW - maybe it's nostalgia of growing up on Cole and Neal, but I love the 2K8 commentary. They could talk about pianos and bears during my hockey game and it would still be pleasant to listen to.

Unlike that hyper idiot Cybulsky "OMG HE WINS THE FACEOFF, OH DEAR GOD PASSES IT TO HIS D-MAN, OH MY GOODNESS HE SKATES UP THE ICE, HEY SNOOP DOGG, DIGGITY LICKETY SPLIT FO SHIZZLE MY NIZZLE, HEY RAY HOW MANY EMPTY NET GOALS, INDICTMENT"

I tell people to play them both for the same amount of time and make their own mind up. I think 2K8 is fantastic on the ice but as a piece of software is probably the most uninspired sports game I've ever played. But, again that's personal. I just need the game to feel like the background crowd noise is equally not like a droning hum of sleepy bees. But pound for pound, as someone who doesn't play franchise, only season mode, 2K8 pales in comparison to 2K10 as a game experience. But I'll say it again, no sports game's controls were ever more well designed than 2K8's.

I grew up with Cole and Neal being the earliest voices I heard calling Leafs games in Toronto. They're not a problem for me either. I love it. It's just that there is no banter whatsoever that in any way speaks to the season, the playoffs, winning a big game, even winning in overtime,.. and after a full season and playoffs that sort of feigned energy in their voices gets old very quickly. Neal is fine, but Bob Cole was never ever as lifeless on TV as he is in this game.

Interesting, what you said about 2K8 was actually the opposite of what others have told me "great game, best goalies, good flow on the ice but the controls could be problematic but you can change them...and the atmosphere of the arenas isn't on the same level as 2K10".

What would you say is so much better about 2K10? I love the 90's, and with the jerseys that 2K8 had I had to get it over 2K10 so I can really play the 90's NHL. Also, I heard there was an issue with skating in 2K10 and with the goalies not being as good as 2K8.

Written the way you've got it there, the atmosphere not being on the same level would mean that 2K10's is better. I don't know anyone who doesn't think that once you've got the controls for 2K8 down, that it isn't better for controls than every other game. But it's personal, it's changeable, and 2K10 is intuitive as well.

Yes I meant to say 2K10 has better atmospheres than 2K8.

              Re: 2K still rocks...

I enjoy a handful of EA's hockey games. Namely NHL 94, NHL 2004 and NHL Legacy Edition. But like tinpanalley says: it gets boring.

NHL 2004 PC is the greatest hockey game ever made in my opinion, I have won the Stanley Cup 4 times in that game but over time it gets boring.

That's why I appreciate 2K existing because if I ever need a change of scenery as far as hockey goes, it serves that purpose.

              DEFINITELY consider releasing these.

A piece of advice: NHL 2K8 contains a chunk of the 1992-93 teams as well as the 1993-94 Canucks, Rangers and Sharks as historic teams. You can simply transfer those players to assist you in the roster creation process and update the 1992-93 ones as necessary for 1993-94.

                Re: 2K still rocks...

I played 2K8 a lot back in the day but I got too good at the controls. The 360 degree skill stick made it possible for me to just skate and deke skate and deke until I scored. That was why I left for EA after that game. The EA skill stick was just so much better and more fluid.
Now go play NHL Two K!

So just to get it straight:

                  2k8- supposedly better gameplay?
2k10- good gameplay, maybe a step back, but superior off-ice game?

2k10's crowd and arena noise are literally deafening! I love how loud it is after goals and how loud the goal horns are! Also, the nets are tight so you'll see snipes literally bounce out of the net which is really cool to see. I personally played the crap out of both but find myself only really wanting to revisit 10 nowdays due to the arena atmosphere. 2k8's was very dry.

if 2k10 just had the 2k8 goalie models and better commentary, it would be perfect. Played a few games over the last few days and it is amazing how hard it is to get through the neutral zone (I use Venom's sliders). In NHL 20, you just skate along the boards. It's incredible how often I have to cycle back because there's just no opening.

Just ordered 2k10. We'll see how it goes.

My last 2k game was 2k5. I don't buy every year, but I'm tired of EA NHL because every game feels the same and every player feels the same.
