Re: The FIFA Project - a four-year cycle of international competition

Algeria are champions of Africa!
Africa Cup of Nation
- (Link)
The Africa Cup of Nations was full of excitement, with a few surprises, but ultimately, the best teams in Africa found themselves in the final stages.

The only surprise in the group stage came with the third place finish in Group B of Nigeria, who were only able to secure 3 points from 3 draws, including a shock result for last place Sierra Leone. Cameroon and Mali advanced, leaving the former champions in the dust.

Otherwise, the knockout stage was a veritable who's who of African football, with an exciting Algeria/Ivory Coast final. The Ivory Coast have dominated opponents in the group stage, including a 4-1 win over Algeria. However, the 5 goals conceded in their first 5 matches ended up being replicated in 120 minutes of football.

Didier Drogba's hat trick in the finals earned him the tournament's top scorer with 7, but it will be the comeback from Algeria, who never led in regulation, down 3-1, but fighting back with 67th and 75th minute goals to force extra time. Taider and Brahimi both scored in the first period of extra time to secure a dramatic win for Algeria! (Senegal defeated Cameroon in the 3rd place game.)

CONCACAF Gold Cup Draw (Link)
The groups for the Gold Cup were drawn, and they are favorable for some, and lopsided for others.

Group A: USA, Honduras, Canada, Cuba
Group B: Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti
Group C: Costa Rica, Jamaica, El Salvador, Grenada

The Ticos will be licking their lips at that promising group draw, which shouldn't give them too much trouble. The Americans, however, look to have some tough competition with fellow World Cup participants Honduras, a tough Canada side, and the Caribbean champions Cuba.

Next post: Euro Qualifying, Gold Cup, Copa America, and the start of World Cup Qualifying!

Re: The FIFA Project - a four-year cycle of international competition

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the Project has continued on. Here's a quick rundown of what's been going on since then (most of these will just direct you to the links, so sorry for the lack of write-ups):

UEFA European Championship Qualifying continues (Link)
Qualifying continues, with matchdays 7 & 8 going on as we speak (so you'll see some updates for some groups but not for others right now). Groups are starting to shape up, and even though the field has expanded to 24, the fight for qualification stays strong.

CONCACAF Gold Cup - USA takes the win! (Link)
In the end, it had to be USA vs Mexico, didn't it? After trouncing opponents in the knockout round (USA 4-0 vs Haiti, 2-0 vs Panama; Mexico 5-0 vs El Salvador, 8-0 vs Honduras), it had to be the two talisman teams of the region meeting in the finals. However, Mexico, who looked unstoppable in scoring, were blanked by the Americans, with Michael Bradley netting twice and Clint Dempsey scoring once in the final for a 3-0 win. The Americans won the tournament, but the leading scorer went to Giovanni Dos Santos with 9 goals in the whole tournament.

Copa America - Chile's glory as heavyweights falter (Link)
Argentina and Brazil were forced to watch from their hotel rooms as the up-and-coming South American teams shined in the Copa America. Both Brazil and Argentina were eliminated from the quarterfinals by Colombia and the USA, respectively. The US took out Uruguay in the third-place game, which was a whirlwind tour for the invitees. The US notched wins over Colombia (in group play), Argentina, and Uruguay. However, it was Chile who took the crown in a wild affair, beating Colombia 6-2, where tournament leading scorer James Rodriguez was blanked. Brazil's major problem was scoring, only netting 4 goals in the entire tournament. Chile, however, couldn't miss the net, scoring 6, 5, and 6 in their three knockout stage wins. This team looks to be scary when World Cup Qualifying starts up.

AFC Regional Tournaments (Link)
These little minor tournaments take place among the sub-regions of AFC. Not much to report, so I'll just leave the link and list winners:

-India won the SAFF Championship by defeating surprise team Maldives in the final 1-0.
-South Korea won the EAFF Championship after final-game drama robbed Japan of the title. Japan needed only a draw against China to secure the victory, but after South Korea beat North Korea 3-0, China's upset 3-1 over Japan put South Korea & Japan tied on points. South Korea's superior goal differential made them unexpected champions!
-The CAFF Championship doesn't exist in real life, since the region just formed, but it's modeled after SAFF with its 6 members. The big surprise was Iran failing to make it to the final, let alone win it, after being heavily favored. Turkmenistan, who beat Iran in group play, lost in the finals to winners Tajikistan.
-The WAFF Championship takes place later this year.

World Cup Qualifying (AFC Link) (CONCACAF Link)
The World Cup qualifying draw took place, and the pages will be created as they start up. The AFC narrowed down from 43 to 40, with Cambodia, Timor-Leste, and Mongolia being the first 3 teams to be eliminated from the Cycle 1 World Cup. The 40 teams are now in 8 groups of 5, with 12 teams emerging for Asia's 4.5 spots.

CONCACAF also began their qualifying, and 5 teams were eliminated as well: Anguilla, US Virgin Islands, Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, and Turks & Caicos Islands. No heavyweights at this point, but the route for CONCACAF has been determined, and 24 teams are about to whittle down to 6, who will join the top 6 teams in the late stages of qualifying.

I'll recap the draw results in the next post.

Re: The FIFA Project - a four-year cycle of international competition

Not much to report on, as the confederations are knee-deep in World Cup Qualifying. For any specific info, I'd point you to the wiki: http://fifaproject.wikia.com/

I'm building some of the pages still as I go. OFC WCQ will have its shortly, as that begins next after I'm done with CONMEBOL (simming as I write this).

The only qualifying that hasn't begun yet is UEFA, as they have just completed EURO qualifying. 21 teams qualified directly after finishing in the top 3 of their qualifying group, while the last 3 spots went to play-off winners. Austria, Slovakia, and Turkey took those final spots, dispatching of Denmark, Ireland, and Bulgaria, respectively. For the most part, qualifying went as expected. Some finishing spots were surprises, but no glaring omissions from the field of 24.

The group stage draw for the 24-team tournament has yet to take place, but the seeding is known. Here's the four pots. Each of the 6 groups will contain one team from each pot.

Pot A: Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, France
Pot B: Switzerland, England, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Greece, Croatia, Turkey
Pot C: Italy, Ukraine, Sweden, Russia, Serbia, Hungary
Pot D: Poland, Austria, Armenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia

The draw for the European Championships will take place at the end of the in-game year. We are currently in November Y1C1, which consists of a large amount of World Cup Qualifying matches, in the other five confederations.

Hey there. Yeah, it is. Loads of other projects, the holidays, as well as real life stuff kind of got in the way. I'm picking this up again today and should have some more results being updated on the site, with big reports coming in here as well.

Coming up... AFC Second Round World Cup Qualifying, with the WAFF Championship and CAF WCQ and OFC Nations Cup after that. Next big event worthy of covering in detail here is the EURO, which will have 24 teams.

Sorry for the absence. I run a stream channel as well so that and other stuff kind of pushed this to the side for a bit.

That's cool. Real life stuff comes first. Looking forward to the update!
